South Carolina Gets a New Senator

From the New York Times:

Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina has chosen Representative Tim Scott to replace

  1. Lucy Pevensie

Hip, hip, hurray!  I needed some good news.

  2. J Turcotte

Congratulations to Tim Scott on becoming the newest member of the Senate. His story, education, and committment to conservative principles and ideals are greatly needed in the Senate as Jim Demint leaves for the Heritage Foundation.

Also, thank you Governor Nikki Haley for making a fabulous decision to pick Scott.

  3. Chris O.

Seems like a good guy. Congratulations Senator Scott and long may you serve.

  4. Pseudodionysius

“Coming from a single-parent household and almost flunking out of high school,” Mr. Scott said in 2010, during his bid for the House, “my hope is I will take that experience and help people bring out the best that they can be.”

If he wants to put some heat on the White House he should release his transcripts immediately. That would be entertaining.

  5. Lamont Cranston

Although Republicans by a large margin have far fewer minorities and women in Congress than Democrats, the party, with Monday’s announcement, will now be able to claim the only current African-American member of the Senate, as well as two of the three Latinos.

Question for the Ricochetois: Am I correct in thinking that the only black Democrats in the House are elected from legally-mandated gerrymandered districts rigged to guarantee that the winner is black?

Which is to say, “set-aside,” or “affirmative action” districts?

And am I correct in thinking that all the black Republicans (and hispanic Republicans, for that matter) are elected from competitive districts?

And am I correct in wondering why it is that the Democrats have never seem to been able to find a black candidate to run for a competitive seat?

And would it be unseemly to remember that the Democrats were the party that (literally) fought to defend the plantation, and to keep the black man in his place?

    Just askin’….

Speaking of “affirmative action”, I appreciated Nikki Haley’s insistence that “he earned” the position.

That, Leigh, is a very, very good point.

In South Carolina–South Carolina!–a woman, of Indian descent, just named an African-American to the Senate.  And this in a Republican Party that’s supposedly  too white, too male, and too Southern.

Proof that the principles of individual liberty and limited government have enduring appeal–and utterly transcend ethnic and regional divisions.

When news of Scott as a possible replacement first leaked out, the Left showed how supportive they were of black candidates, so long as they were from the Left.

DeMint was Thurmond’s replacement, so Scott will actually be taking Thurmond’s Senate seat now.

Isn’t it interesting that in the above link Eugene Robinson said it was the policies that are the important thing – more important than race.   Yet when it comes to conservatives commenting on O’s policies…

Paul Thurmond (who’s a decent guy actually) just won a seat in the state Senate.

There really was an embarrassment of riches in the primary that year, when Scott first won Henry Brown’s old seat.  Businesspeople, conservatives, veterans from every branch of the service.  I’ll miss having Scott as my representative (but will like having him as my Senator), but I’m confident we’ll find a worthy replacement.

I don’t doubt that he’s a good man, but there’s something of a cosmic justice in Scott’s win. Also, I have a healthy loathing for political dynasties.

Would need ok from Peter etc. Could get him in touch. · 7 hours ago

Andrew, you most definitely have my okay!  Could you send the Blue Yeti an email, letting him know how to get in touch with Congressman (soon to be Senator) Scott?

    We’d be just enormously grateful.

So, from a cynical marketing perspective, how many new memberships could you get out of that (behind-the-paywall) podcast?

  16. Brian Clendinen

The most conservative Senator is being replaced by one who will be competing for the title. At lest some good news in the Senate after a depressing election in regards to the Senate (in my mind as or more depressing than presidental).
