Sequestergeddon: How Are You Coping?

I got home late last night and Twitter was erupting with early reports of the horrific world wrought by Sequester. My favorites:

@petersuderman: Some men just want to watch the world reduce federal spending by 2.4 percent.

@AngusDwyer So does western civilization end all at once at midnight eastern or is it more of a rolling collapse as we move through the …

    Depends on how long the food in the freezer lasts. Pardon me for a moment I hear her yowling for some reason.

    I really hope that someone (RNC?) keeps track of all the decisions the Obama administration makes to cut essential services when non-essential cuts could have been made, and then makes a professional video to drum the point home.

    Well, that’s misleading, even by CNN’s low standards.  According to today’s WSJ, the cuts for the remainder of fiscal 2013 amount to $43 billion and those will take effect incrementally between now and September 30.  The idea that the government has to cut $85 billion starting right now is a fine example of the mass media repeating BHO’s scare tactics.

    A section of the sky about the size of a football field fell in a cornfield early this morning on a farm near my house.    During breakfast, several more pieces dropped suddenly on the state park not far from here and I could hear muffled thuds as more and more fragments peeled away from the firmament and crashed to Earth.  I went out on my deck just before sunrise and looked up.  Where the Big Dipper used to be there is now nothing at all.  Judging from the activity over the past few hours, I expect the enitre sky will have fallen in about 13 hours.

    CNN’s website says “The day that was never supposed to come is here”.  Is Godzilla going to show up on the California coast line and start electrifying the national guard?

    Or maybe today is more like a day that will live in infamy.

    Or maybe it’s a day long remembered.

    Or maybe it’s just Friday, and I’m having lunch at a fancy Italian restaurant and thumbing my nose at the sequester.

    I’m living deep underground in an abandoned lead mine near Area 51 to avoid falling pieces of sky and the resulting radiation.

    I just ran the math, and this will cost me about $7K, not including the overtime that won’t happen. The rest of government may be only growing at a slower rate, but even with the grade increase I received last month (based on receiving a new license and new qualifications, not an automatic increase) I’m on track to make significantly less this year than last. So much for this being the year I catch up and/or get ahead…

    KP – That sucks, but understand:  we in the private sector went through this by necessity a few years ago.  I laid off three people from my department, and we all took a 5% pay cut.  It wasn’t for us then, and it isn’t fun for you now.  But we got through it, and so will you.  I’ll buy your coffee at the next PNW meet up.  |-{

    I can adjust to a 5% cut, last year was pretty much like that just because of reduced overtime. This is 20% of base for 6 months (no clue what happens next fiscal year) and a loss of all overtime.

    Also, if I have to cut back, I turn off the cell phones, cable, etc. I don’t stop buying groceries or paying the electric bill, which is essentially how the sequester is playing out. I wish they’d cut 50% of government, but they have to do it in a responsible way. I know, I’m a dreamer.
