Rest in Peace, Cosmo Goldberg

I would like to bring to your attention that Jonah Goldberg announced yesterday on The Corner that Cosmo the Wonderdog passed away.

Anyone who is moderately familiar with Jonah’s writings, especially on NRO or on Twitter, will know that Cosmo was a very large and important part not only of Jonah’s literary oeuvre, but also o…

Old dogs, best replaced by new dogs . Memories linger with puppies around, but fade as you are cleaning up after them comparing the time it took the old dog to become housebroken.

We take solace in Jasper Lileks continued existence .

Having followed Jonah and James Lileks since about 2000, they very wisely wove their families and animals into their writing and created an internet of empathy which continues. Having met both of them on the same NR cruise, I could barely contain my glee ,which I masked with studied queries about political this n that.  How does one react when a stranger comes up and asks about one’s daughter or one’s dog ?  Public lives and glass houses. I thank them for their humanity and bringing it to the discourse of the earlier ,friendlier days of the internet…you know …. when it was like Ricochet !

You don’t have to hope, because all dogs do go to heaven. Except Chihuahuas because they are not dogs. Also about half of cats go to heaven the others just have some place better to be.

Thank you Valiuth, and I hope that you include Pomeranians . My wife has a chihuahua and a Pom, they are intemperate ,unhousebroken shrill little harridans.

My two dogs , a Rott and a Chocolate are perfectly behaved, provide a defensive perimeter for the house and are housebroken.

Does the boatman on the River Styx accept burlap bags of unknown origin ?

    RIP, Cosmo.

Good luck with the “this is what death means for a household member” thing, Jonah.

God speed Cosmo. May the squirrels be a half-step slow and the bacon well-done.

Farewell, Master, yet not farewell Where I go, ye too shall dwell I am gone before your face, A moment’s time, a little space When ye come where I have stepped Ye will wonder why ye wept –Edwin Arnold

    Condolences to the Goldbergs.

They say all dogs go to heaven, so Cosmo must be enjoying it already.

    Condolences.

    So sorry, Jonah.

Hope your wife and daughter are back from Alaska, Jonah. It’s lousy to lose a dog (especially such a great d-a-w-g like Cosmo) but impossibly bad without loved ones around to share the loss.

If those damn pets were not so wonderful their passing wouldn’t be so painful.

Best wishes to the Goldbergs at this difficult time.

    From my note to Jonah:

[D]eepest of condolences on the loss of Cosmo. We’ve lost several pups and it only seems to get harder, not easier, to let them go. One of Luther’s more endearing traits was a love of dogs. One of the more famous tales is of him telling his daughter, upon the loss of her dog, that if that was the only way that she would be able to experience pure joy in heaven, then he was certain her pet would have a place there.

    Your Fricosis Guy,

    ****

RIP Cosmo our condolences to Jonah & his family. I feel the urge to reread Jonah’s story about driving cross county with Cosmo marry the Fair Jessica
