Know the Game

So you want to defeat liberals … good for you.

Study hard, prepare your arguments, and attack.

Feels good. Until we lose.

And we will lose.

Why?

Because while the rightward 20% attacks the leftward 20%, the leftward 20% is feeding prepackaged political junk food to the middle 60%.

We think winning means being right. They think winning means getting 50.1% of the vote.

We are playing one game and they are playing another.

And they are playing the game that matters.

They do not care wha…

The only thing that matters going forward is prosecuting these scandals to the utmost.  Arrests change the narrative.  Nothing other than a full court press wins the day.

As far as the game we play, of course you are right.  People are low info.  Scandals aren’t important without names named and arrests.

I don’t think the problem is low info.  I think the problem is that people want easy info.

Press most anyone about any political issue and I bet they break down almost instantly.  You don’t even have to press hard.  Just say “Why do you believe that?” or “Is that true?”  They’ll cave.

And that’s because they read a fancy headline or heard a clever blurb, internalized it, and are now regurgitating it.  They can sound like an informed citizen without bothering to become informed.

“Go Green!” is much more easily ingested than “Technically, only 10% of a glass bottle can be recycled material and a bottle that already contains recycled material cannot be reused….”

They do not care what we think.  They do not care about our arguments.

This is the essence of it.  We (champions of individual liberty) assume we can prevail in argument, while they (aspiring tyrants) are willing to promise anything to get the votes to put themselves into power.

Most of us have lives outside politics; they don’t.  If we lose, we go back to our previous careers; if they lose, they’re on the street with no marketable skills.

They view us not as worthy opponents, but rather enemies.  Only when we treat them as the enemies they are will we have a chance of prevailing.

No prosecutions means we get a J Bush vs H Clinton choice.

What the GOP fails to realize is that if they come off as uncaring, the rank and file will stop caring as well.  Try going to war with a giant corporate money chest and no soldiers.

Oh, Hillary will win in 2016. It’s baked in the cake. Voters don’t elect politicians anymore. Politicians, through suppression (IRS) and/or fraud (ACORN), select their voters.

Hillary wins in 2016. You heard it here first.

Having read this post, I have a choice:

go out and pick up my share of fresh, organic strawberries (I think it is still strawberries, although we may now be on to cherries) … and prep to show a co-op tonight

    or slit my wrists

    OR

I can find the latest video of Rand Paul or Ted Cruz (he puts out fewer videos) and remember that there are Conservatives and Republicans (that should cover everyone’s definition of Rand Paul) who are ready to fight that fight

Oh, I cannot slit my wrists.  I promised to work the photo booth at Cornerstone Church’s Summer Celebration on Saturday 29 June.

That and I just renewed my membership in the Exit Real Estate Top Properties franchise and don’t want to waste the $295.

So come on guys, find something besides how bad things are in the country to think about!  Even if you aren’t of the Faith that says it, you can still take heart:

We know that by turning everything to their good God co-operates with all those who love him.

So what does this mean in practice? Lie about our preferred policies and promise alternate forms of junk food, then implement a flat tax and market-based healthcare reforms when we win the election?

There’s no wrist slitting in politics!

On the contrary, this post is intended to exhort the brethren to focus.

We can win.  We just need to remember what it is we’re trying to win.  We aren’t trying to convert liberals.  We are trying to nudge a few guys in the middle our way.

    Do not lie.  Simplify.

The other day I got into a conversation about government run health care.  I’ve been in these conversations a hundred times.  And I majored in Econ.  I’d give supply curve this and demand curve that.  And I’d always get back “Yeah, well don’t you think health is more important than money.”  Or some such thing.  Never made a dent.

But this time I gave Rob’s argument.  We live in an on-demand world.  I can custom order shoes, personalize my phone, keep everything I own in the cloud.  But they want to give me 1950s one size fits all?

I dented the heck outta this guy.  In 30 seconds.  Because it was easier, simpler, and just as true.

  12. Dudley

Knowing the game is futile if the outcome is already determined. The best that can be hoped for is to somehow slow the decline.  When being a ‘good American’ is defined by how dependent one is on the government then it’s over. Remember the Julia campaign?  While a few issues may be won by conservatives the overall contest is lost.  The majority of voters are either uneducated, poorly educated of just plain stupid. And the majority are looking for a handout. This is by design.  The progressives control education in this country. The indoctrination begins in kindergarten and it is too late to turn it around.  Make as much money as you can while you can and then find a quiet corner of the world far from here to live out your days.  That’s my plan.

  13. FloppyDisk90

I think this is the plan that the Rick Murphys, Karl Roves, and the rest of the establishment GOP apparatchiks are trying to implement.  You may think you’re being revolutionary but this is exactly what gave us Romney.

  14. Indaba

Peter Robinson mentioned doing a podcast about Stephen Harper and how a conservative won the leftie Canadians. It is not that he omits. He just does not say. He know he has to get the votes. He throws out red meat like hockey equipment tax breaks. The newspapers have half of their front cover dedicated to hockey equipment costs and giving Canadians a break on their equipment. Around the country, people hear hockey rebates and vote yes.

The lefties in the debates yell about economics and details on climate change. Harper stuck to soccer mum issues and hockey fan stuff. Did I mention he is writing a book on hockey in Canada? We still have not seen it and he is now the longest serving PM of Canada.

He plays music with Rock bands and yo yo ma.

And he does really really good attack advertising on the comedy channel and his marketing show up on Ricochet – since I am Canadian, you probably do not see it but that is pretty targeted online marketing.

exactly as Casey says, the American right needs to know it has to win the vote.

  15. FloppyDisk90

The progressives control education in this country, the indoctrination begins in kindergarten and it is too late to turn it around.

This is a crucial point.  By the time people reach voting age they have been steeped in progressive ideology and shifting their political preferences requires enormous effort for infinitesimal results.  I’ve made this pitch before but no amount of “messaging” at this point is going to work.  What’s needed is a full court press to win back the education system.

  16. Edward Smith

I am relaxing right now by listening to EconTalk.  I find it to be calming to listen to conversations about, well trying to break down the complex.

    http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2013/06/stevenson_and_w.html

I would not recommend talking like this on the campaign, but I suspect that Ronald Reagan read some pretty dense stuff and brought that gleaned wisdom to his political life.

So an entertainer with a strong intellectual streak.

I think people think that they need to check that box. With Obama, many voted out of white guilt that it was time to elect a minority to the WH. Therefore, it stands to reason that the next box to check would be for a woman. With Hillary, some will vote for her because she’s a woman and some will vote for because they feel sorry for her.

  18. Gary The Ex-Donk

Republicans were once very good at this game.  For most of the 80′s and a little bit of the 90′s.  There were guys like Roger Ailes (before he went private sector) and Lee Atwater.  They were like Jedi Masters in this game.

I should know because during that time I was a young, stupid registered Democrat and I marveled at how the DNC were constantly left dumbstruck at the polling.  And they did all this with only one conservative media outlet – Rush Limbaugh.  No FoxNews, No Internet, No Podcasting, No Blogs, No news aggregating sights.  No online communities.  The media deck was stacked completely against them.

Then Republicans in general and conservatives in particular got complacent.  And the Left learned all too well.  In fact, they took it to a whole new level.  And the Right figured, hey we need not worry because we have the facts on our side.  The voters will see through all this.

Phooey.  The culture war is over.  We lost because we didn’t fight back when it was most important to fight.  We gave up trying to persuade.  And now we’ve forgotten how to do it.

    Amen to this post, brutha.

  19. Western Chauvinist

I’m of two minds on this… I’m all for “More wag, less bite,” as recently read on some liberal’s bumper. Tone matters when conversions are the goal. We haven’t had a gifted happy warrior leading conservatives since Reagan, it’s true.

But, about the game analogy, I think what conservatives recognize, which makes the “happy” part hard, is that we’re in an existential fight (not game) to save this one-time unique experiment in liberty.

The lefties I know are huge sports fans. Die hard loyalists. It’s true they play to win. If some fingers get jammed in the eye, or some knees are thrown to the groin, well… that’s all part of the game. Whatever it takes.

They have opponents. We have enemies.

They have play calls (demonization works, have you noticed?). We have ideas.

They have game plans (first capture the heart and mind forming institutions of education and media). We have first principles.

We win some battles/scrimmages (2010 and governor’s mansions), they win the war/championship.

What’s the solution? I’m going back to basics. Tell the truth with love, and trust in the Lord.

  20. Joseph Stanko

We administer too many purity tests.

To pass our legislation, we need to win both houses of Congress.  That means we need to win some races in blue or purple districts.  The only Republicans who can win in those districts are people some around here would label moderate RINO squishes.

It’s fine to insist on hardcore fire-breathing conservatives in safe red districts, but we need to pick our battles.
