Intel Tab (beta)

We have a new tab, “Intel,” up there on the right. It’s a place where Members can ask questions of the Ricochet community and receive in response pointed, substantiated answers.

Our Objectives

We’re doing this for three reasons:

  1. To help all of us win more arguments. The Logo — who, like most of you, lives in deep blue territory — frequently finds himself arguing with Leftist friends and relatives. They unfurl some wild-eyed canards about the evils o…

The Intel button looks much better without the dot.

Now to get rid of the glaringly green Share icon… (and if Share includes Facebook and Twitter, do you need the facebook and tweet buttons on posts as well?)

    Welcome, Ricochet members!

To be completely honest, much of the new Intel tab was inspired by sites like StackExchange.com, Quora.com, Yahoo! Answers, and many other similar sites.  Perhaps our main innovation is to add an urgency field and a requested due time.

The other main reason to have a question and answer page on Ricochet is that we are a more focused community, with more shared goals.  You’ll get better quality answers here than you will, say, on Quora.

I hope you put this new feature to good use!

But remember, it’s not a place to ask support questions.  Please send those to support@ricochet.com as always.

And all for the price of a grand latte at the flagship Starbucks in Seattle!

  4. Misthiocracy

    No jokes allowed.  ;-)

  5. Busy System Admin

We do want to keep it to questions of substance. The idea is to further the cause, right?

And here I thought it was an opportunity to order discounted microprocessors to speed up our Ricochet surfing.

I notice that Logo and BSA still don’t like my suggestion of a tip jar.

Actually, I have not heard this idea.  Sounds interesting!  Not sure how it could be implemented, though.

Why is the Sierra Club query grayed-out?

“What it isn’t” made me literally laugh out loud.  :-)

I’m sorry but someone has already trademarked or copyrighted that idea, so you will have to pay up.

On my system (IE8 on WinXP), everything below the title of the question has a dark gray background, although it is still legible. However, there is no “Add your Answer” area at the bottom of the page, and clicking the Answer link goes nowhere because there is no #new-answer tag. I was only able to post an answer by using Firefox, which shows everying on a white background, and has the expected “Add your Answer” area. Yes, I am logged in (as proved by this comment).

  13. Ethan, College Conservative

I noticed a comment on the Member Feed debate chat that I agreed with and decided to post here- the “urgent” signal that goes off of the Intel Tab when there’s an urgent question is kind of annoying. I feel it should be more subtle- considering the other tabs don’t have any animation, it’d probably be easy to catch someone’s attention with something simpler.

By the way, the orange light appears to be pixelated when the user isn’t on the Intel page (but against a white background it isn’t pixelated.) I also feel that the light itself should reflect the entire Ricochet design. Here’s what I propose: http://bit.ly/zkzP0e

I’ve always admired the sleekness of Ricochet’s design- plus I like the Intel page itself, so sorry if this sounds like I’m bullying the Intel tab! Thanks for reading my feedback.

    Thanks for the feedback!

We are experimenting with changing the Share icons/links, and I inadvertently put the Share link up next to the other (Facebook, Twitter, Email) links.  That should go away soon, until/unless we decide to use it instead of the separate buttons for individual Share options.

Just out of curiosity, why did the join date go away from the avatars in the comments? Not a huge deal, but I always liked that feature.

These will come back once I get time to look at the code.

We’ve just rolled out a series of improvements and tweaks to the Intel tab, as well as addressed some of the issues mentioned above.
