How Not to Send a Condolence Card

Do I need to comment upon this piece of spam I just received from a company called Care2 Petition?

SUBJECT: CORRECTION: Offer A Message of Condolence to Norway

Dear Claire,

Oops! We goofed. You received this email from me earlier today asking you to send a message of condolence to the people of Norway.

One sentence of the e-mail read, “Fueled by his rage against Iceland’s multicultural policies, Breivik lashed out at representatives of Iceland’s left-wing Labor Party.”

The sentence should have read, “Fueled by his rage against Norway’s multicultural policies, Breivik lashed out at representatives of Norway’s left-wing Labor Party.”

We’re sorry about the mix-up and any confusion it caused. But we encourage you to send a message of support to Norwegians and spread the word too. Thank you for reaching out to Norwegians in their time of tragedy.

Thanks for making a difference,

–Kathleen J. and the Care2 Campaign Team

I didn’t make that up.

I guess you can ‘astroturf’ sympathy.  Does anyone really think the sovereign nation of Norway requires Hallmark cards to know that every civilized person is appalled by this barbarous act?  Silly people, pray, it’s quicker.

    Dear Sir or Madam:

I wish to offer my deep personal condolences on the loss of your son/daughter/entire brood.  May God/Buddha/the Hindu Pantheon/Gaia/the Gods of Asgaard/the Universe grant him/her/them peace.

You couldn’t make that sort of thing up. The Care2 Campaign team indeed. They sound like Team Obama.

Darn. All those Nordic people look alike…

SUBJECT:CORRECTION: My Message of Condolence to Iceland

    Dear Iceland,

Oops! I goofed. You received this email from Me earlier today regarding My message of condolence to the people of Iceland.

One sentence of the email read,”Fueled by their compassion for Iceland’s multicultural policies, Care2 Campaign encouraged Me to send My condolence for Your Nation.”

The sentence should have read,”Fueled by their compassion for Norway’s multicultural policies, Care2 Campaign encouraged Me to send My condolence for Your Nation.” And sent to…. Norway, of course.

I’m sorry for the mix-up and any confusion it caused.
