(Gimlet) Eye of Newt

Is there any windmill that has produced more fruitless bipartisan tilting than the Middle East peace process? The left is already going nuts over the clip below (I first saw it at Think Progress), but, for my money, Newt Gingrich gives the most strategically and morally concise (not to mention honest) reading of the reality:

  1. ConservativeWanderer

I’m not a Newt fan, but in that case, he just plain nailed it.

  2. Instugator

That the left is going nuts over this confirms one thing – Newt’s characterization of the problem is accurate. Even the peace with Egypt, while honest up until about 20-ish months ago is in danger of crumbling.

  3. BlueAnt

Has he been called a racist neo-con warmonger yet?  Cause I think, in the Big Red Handbook of Liberalism, stock response #4578 is triggered by this kind of clarity.

  4. Group Captain Mandrake

Any peace negotiations cannot hold much promise as long as one side to the negotiations continues to hold Israel’s destruction as a laudable and realistic goal.

The formal recognition of Israel inherent in the peace treaty with Egypt was an important step, but what Israel really needs and has not yet truly acquired from her neighbours in the region is acceptance.

I agree.  Newt has it right here.

  6. Super Nurse

It’s not surprising that the left is up in arms over this. Quite true, and despite Pollyannish hopes, confirmed by the actual words of the leaders of anti-Israeli/ pro-Palestinian groups. I will never understand the general refusal to live in reality on this topic.

Republican PAC money would be better served by keeping Newt and Ron Paul on TV every day for the next four years, than by saving up and carpet bombing ads for 3 months in 2016.

If its a Breitbart style battle to the finish to the media, you may be on to something.

  11. Masked Man

Only Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin seem to get it. Sadly, the Republican Party seems defenseless against efforts to take out its boldest leaders.

  12. Stephen Hall

Let me pull on my my bullet-proof jacket and say: “I wish Newt had been the nominee.” There! That feels better. Newt most certainly would not have waged a narrow-focus campaign.

  13. Clandesteyn

There is no issue like Israel/Palestine that so succinctly exposes the corruption of one’s moral clarity caused by the anti-colonialist, anti-western value system.  This is literally a case of blood-thirsty barbarians at the gates of civilization.

How would liberals picture the region after a Muslim victory?  How would they picture it if Israel were somehow victorious?  The answer is that they don’t bother thinking that far ahead because the only value they see in the debate is their own ability to posture as champions of the “oppressed.”  It feels good, damn it.  So why bring talk of outcomes or genocides into this?!

Western Civilization and Islam have no more hope of coexisting than did Rome and Carthage. The only question is: Will we be Rome or Carthhage? I choose Rome. Islam must be utterly annihilated. I don’t welcome or wish it. It is simply a task that must be undertaken regardless of how distasteful it is. Hard and necessary work is never easy. Nevertheless.

  16. Chris Campion

I guess even 8,600 rocket attacks from Gaza since 2001 isn’t enough to convince Western media that maybe, just maybe, “Palestinians” aren’t interested in anything other than killing Jews.

Would 17,200 be more convincing?  How about 34,400?  And where do many of these missiles come from?

Iran.  Why, exactly, do we not “have Israel’s back” on all of this, 100%, all the time?

I’d be willing to settle for bombing them so thoroughly that they wet themselves (skirting the CoC here, I know) at the mere thought of attacking us or any of our allies, especially Israel.

Oops!  Careful with that kind of talk.  Yes, if we want “world peace,” so to speak, that would be necessary.  But unless you have a magic wand somewhere, it’s best to focus our attention ways of coping with the problem that will always be with us.  Better to leave talk of annihilating other religions to the imams…

Zafar: Fantastic, you mean they’re going to allow the Palestinian refugees to return home?

You and I both know that that isn’t going to happen and for good reasons.  If there is to be a comprehensive peace settlement, I expect that there will be compensation discussions (which discussions might also include compensation for Jewish refugees from Arab countries).  However to ask Israel to absorb the numbers of people that the other side are unreasonably claiming as refugees would be to ask Israel to commit suicide (again this proves my point that the destruction of Israel is still high on the agenda).

As I said, the equivalent proposal by the Israelis to the current Palestinian proposals would either be to ask all Israeli Arabs to leave Israel and to pledge the destruction of a future Palestinian state.  Neither has happened or will happen.

I am a sometimes Ron Paul fan and I like the strategy, but this could be dangerous. If Iran lights off a nuke test I can envision Ron Paul blaming it on America because the CIA set up the Shah in 19whatever.

Newt on the other hand should be funded for a weekly 1 minute commercial run on all major networks.
