Conservatives in Hollywood: Is It Really Getting Easier?

I’m hoping Rob Long can weigh in on this.

First there was Clint Eastwood at the Republican convention. “There are a lot of conservative people … in Hollywood,” he said. “It’s just that the conservative people, by the nature of the word itself, play it a little more close to the vest.”

Then, the other day, I saw an interview on Fox News wh…

I would never have guessed some of those celebrities identify as Republicans. Never.

Hmm. To be honest, I’ve never felt any career friction because of my politics — though I know others have. But I have noticed alot more Republican kind of activity and comments since 2008. That could be because since 2008, The Hollywood left has had its candidate in office. And he hasn’t done so well. Yet another way that Barack Obama has been a wonderful gift to the right.Incidentally, I am making this comment via my iPhone. Using voice recognition. Not bad.

Hollywood is no different than any place else: Show us that you can make us tons of money and we don’t care what your politics are. But show us first. Then you can be a pain.

“Legendary thespian Scott Baio.”  Truer words have never been written.

Voice recognition software has been the bane of my existence for a decade. It is like a child, there is one word it doesn’t understand – No.

There are some less publicity-prone celebrities with a conservative bent. One of my favorite of the more subtle is Gary Sinise. He got spread so thin in his multiple “Nation’s defenders” activities that he had to form the Gary Sinise Foundation to keep up. But a little on-screen tell is that his character on CSI:NY has a picture of Ronald Reagan in his office.

EJ or  Rob – are the likes of Gary Sinise considered in any way one of EJ’s “pains?”

I always try to tell myself that although those Hollywoodites  attend the fundraisers and make PSA’s and do voiceovers for commercials for Obama….we really don’t know how they voted once they go into the booth.

When you’re a super bright guy fresh out of Yale (libs bow before power/social prestige like nothing else), then, yes, you’re going to get a pass on your politics. It won’t be a real hindrance.

If you’re from anything less — or if you’ve not already established unquestionable, mega buck-making talent — it has seemed to me you’ll be ostracized by many people in Industry. And certainly belittled  socially — most particularly by the women.  Try saying you’re opposed to SSM amongst Industry people. It’s no exaggeration to say you might as well announce yourself as a child-molester.

I always tell myself I hope gasoline prices rise another $1 in California. Their behavior in the voting booth built those special California blends.

I’ve met him a couple of times.  Nicest guy in the world.  And whip smart, too.  I’m really happy for him — he’s got a great new show on.

It’s actually part of the new OS on the iPhone.  It’s the little microphone icon on the keyboard.  It even puts in a”?” when you say “question mark.”

Absolutely not.  And Gary isn’t shy about his conservative politics — but he is focused on his work with veterans, which is something he feels deeply about and is committed to.    I think that’s taken a huge amount of his free time (also: he’s a family man).  But if there’s a resurgence of center/right politics among Hollywood denizens, it’s entirely attributable to Gary Sinise and his courage.    Personally, I want to see him run for governor.  He’s the real thing.
