America Seen From Reality TV

I heard something on CNN this morning. The guest asked a question, “ if China’s only view of America were based on the TV shows they watched, what would be their impression of America with all the crap reality shows available (i.e. the Housewives of XXX) .  I would like to change that query to “If you could chose just 2 or 3 shows (currently on air), you wanted the Chinese people to u…

UFC.  Guess what kids, don’t even try.

  2. Doug Lee

Wow, what a great post.  If you could expand the list a little, I’d add Mythbusters:  “We can be smart and have fun with guns, cars and high explosives at the same time.”

  3. CuriousJohn

Mythbusters was one of my choices at first.  If I could do anything as a job.  I would be a Mythbuster.  That’s the coolest job out there!!

  4. Fake John Galt

Combat Hospital aired on ABC, I watched it on Hulu. It about a Combat Hospital in Afghanistan. Season One ended a couple month ago, not sure when or if the next one starts.

  5. Frozen Chosen

“Gold Rush” – We are a country where a bunch of guys who have no clue what they’re doing can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars doing it!

“Storage Wars” – Some jobs are too dirty for even Mike whats-his-name!

“Say yes to the Dress” – We are a country where eloping is usually the best option!

“Cake Boss” – We are a country where not all Italians are obnoxious mafioso – some are obnoxious bakers!

“Jon & Kate plus 8″ – We are a country where fertility drugs are your ticket to stardom!

“19 and counting (Duggars)” – who needs fertility drugs!

“Pawn Stars” – don’t you wish your county museum director had a cool hat like ours does!

I could go on but I’m sure you’ve already regretted creating this post.

  6. Matthew Gilley

    (1) Ice Road Truckers (message: you really want to mess with people who sign up for this?) and (2) Ghost Hunters (message: even the undead show respect … so what’s your excuse, frenchie?).

  7. Haakon Dahl

Little House on the Prairie — How (we say) we got here.

COPS — What we do to maintain our society.

Dexter — You should have believed us when we said COPS.

  8. Kirsten Weiss

I spent 14 years living overseas and the sad news is, that’s EXACTLY how we’re judged!  Though in my days, it was re-runs of BayWatch and crummy soap operas…

    Frozen Chosen

I am not sorry.  You got the point.  I love your spin  Keep them coming.

  10. CuriousJohn

    Love the COPS insight.

Tripedis Canis: Mythbusters – There is knowable, objective truth and it is important.

Deadliest Catch – Free enterprise is a system where passion can thrive.

COPS – This is a nation of laws, not men, enforced by human beings, not automatons.

Investigation Discovery channel – The pursuit of justice is essential to our character. · 4 hours ago

    Now that’s Fan of Mike.

I often wonder how much can these people make (in reference to Dirty Jobs)  But I’m sure there are people out there where money isn’t the issue.  Thank GOD for the Dirty Jobs people.

    CuriousJohn:

My choices and the message it sends:

“American Idol” -We are gifted with song and music is important

“Dirty Jobs” – We are gifted with passion and free enterprise

Don’t forget that you can combine these two messages by singing along with Mike Rowe:

Dirty Jobs song in honor of 100th dirty job

Dirty Jobs song in honor of dirty jobs in all 50 states

If Mike Rowe isn’t an American idol, I don’t know who is ;-) · 6 hours ago

This String is going so Strong, I’m going to do a version for shows no longer new , but are still current.  I will have to start making a list of them.  I haven’t watched Dexter yet.

Would you like to give an example of their non rigorous.. I feel I need to step up to support my Mythbusters, since they’re not here to defend themselves.

Mark Wilson: Several people have brought up Mythbusters and the ethos of skepticism.  I would just like to remind everyone that while Mythbusters is an awesome show and a ton of vicarious fun, you shouldn’t set aside your healthy skepticism while watching it.  The experiments they run aren’t always, how shall I say … rigorous. · 6 hours ago

Pawn Stars- Contrary to whatever experience you’ve had with our federal government, many of us still know how to drive a hard bargain.

Jersey Shore- We are a compassionate people; even those of us with severe mental disabilities enjoy beachfront property.
