A Special Friday Edition Ricochet Podcast with Jonah Goldberg

Last week, we took a bit of heat for not announcing that we have moved the podcasts to Thursdays while Rob’s TV show is in production. So we wanted to get the word out early and loudly that for this week only, we’re moving to Friday so our good pal Jonah Goldberg could join us for the full hour.

To pass the time, get your hands on a copy of Jonah’s new book The Tyranny of Cliches: How Liberals Cheat in the War of Ideas either on Amazon or later this week, on Audible (Jonah reads it!).

Also, enjoy (OK, that may be the wrong word) this interview Jonah did yesterday with world class twit Piers Morgan. On Friday, we’ll ask Jonah how he was able to resist the urge to reach across the table and clock him (h/t Ricochet member Joseph Eager).

  1. The Cloaked Gaijin

Well, I tried to watch that but I turned it off when the interviewer had no intention of discussing the book.  I fast-fowarded the video, and it was the same.  What a waste.

Jonah: “Of course, liberals have an ideology, but they don’t understand it, they don’t think about it, they don’t question it…”

Interviewer:  (Let me dump this load of manure which has nothing to do with anything onto your conservative lap as I can’t be bothered to think of more than one topic a day for my high-priced salary.)

Interviewer:  President Clinton’s right!  President Clinton’s right! President Clinton’s right!  You must admit that President Clinton is right about killing Osama bin Laden.  Please validate my prejudice about how President Clinton is a foreign policy expert.

Jonah: “(Right, President Clinton) didn’t do it when he had a chance.”

Hmm, the interviewer didn’t seem happy that Jonah agreed with him about President Clinton knowing something about Osama bin Laden.

Jonah must have paid this interviewer to act so stereotypically silly, but I don’t really see the point.  I would rather have seen just a normal discussion.

  2. J. D. Fitzpatrick

“No doubt everyone reading this “News”letter knows what I’m talking about. We say, “Two plus two is four,” and they respond, “Yes, but a vest has no sleeves.”"

Can’t you see why Jeremy Clarkson punched him in the face?

Video of Jeremy talking about hitting Piers Morgan…

The good, entertaining British journalists stay over there, and send the losers and wankers to the U.S. to bother the Yanks.

  4. Von Snrub

I love the part where he exclaims he’s neither for democrats or republicans. Great!

  5. mfgcbot

Thanks for capping off a perfectly rotten week with that.

Piers Morgan is insufferable.  I don’t know how Jonah got through it.

At least my dead-tree version of The Tyranny of Cliches is on its way.

  6. billy

God, Morgan is an obnoxious prig.

  7. Britanicus

I’ll be buying this book for Audible–I just finished Charles Murray’s book and need something new.

One sort of related question I have is this; does Jonah’s book have many charts and visuals? My one complaint with using Audible for “Coming Apart” is that I wasn’t able to see the graphs.

  8. Indaba

Piers did do an entertaining job and Jonah came across as relaxed, smart and open for discussion. We need more of this and to watch and analyze. The line of attack questioning was good and Jonah brought up points foreign to Piers.I have not seen Piers have this much fun in a long time. Well done, Jonah. As a writer, not a tv star, he did very well. We should watch to learn how to have discussions rather than retreat to our separate towers. Bet Jonah will get asked back.

Mr. Speaker, I rise to amend my remarks…

So how many other First and last -time viewers were there to the show? For a guy with such pathetic ratings – I’m surprised he didn’t want to hang on to a few of us!

Still, the combined impact of pomposity and stupidity was truly impressive though.

I both loved that display of ignorance by Morgan and also realized I had to turn it off because I couldn’t listen any more.

I would also like to go into full Seth and Amy “Really?” mode.

That was seriously awful television. I will watch anything (ask my husband) and I couldn’t take it. The stupid was hurting me. My mind began wandering about how awesome a country America must be to bestow success even on idiots such as Morgan.

  15. Spin

At about the 6 minute mark Piers did exactly what Jonah says they do:  ”I’m not interested in democrats or republicans….I’m interested in reality”.

At the beginning I was thinking “Hey, we need someone to hit Jonah pretty hard.  he’s a smart guy and he can take it.” But then Morgan just droned on and on, and then began to engage in “high-school debate crap”.  He was clearly not interested in hearing Jonah’s point, just trying to make Jonah look stupid.

I say well done to Jonah for keeping his cool under difficult circumstances.  I probably would’ve gone all Jeremy Clarkson on ‘im.

Well success is a strong word since I hear Red Eye at 3Am has more viewers in demo but…

Thursday Apr 26th ratings from TV by the numbers:

    FNC

    Hannity

       2,031

           424

            794

    CNN

    Piers Morgan Tonight

         499

           135

            214

  17. Barkha Herman

    Wow!

I have to admit that I’ve never heard a section with Pierce Morgan before.  If I was Jonah, I would ask him 2 questions:

1 – Can you seriously tell me that you are not in the bag for Obama and the Democrats?  Because from where I am sitting, you sound less like a journalist and more like a hurt little school girl whos “crush” has been insulted.

2 – Have you heard of the rumor that Brits are supposed to be dignified?  I wonder what started that?

Bonus question – do you know why your ratings are dropping?

  18. Andrew Barrett

Typical liberal media type.  Invite conservative on show to discuss book.  Ignore book.  Hammer conservative over the head with disingenuous arguments.  God bless Jonah!!!

It was beautiful, however, that after Jonah finished explaining that his book is about how clueless most liberals are concerning how ideological they really are, Piers Morgan could not have done a better job proving his point.

  19. Albert Arthur

What was annoying about the segment was exactly encapsulated by the G-File quote that J.D. Fitzpatrick pulled up. Liberals who watch will say, “Vests don’t have sleeves; Republicans suck!” Conservatives who watch will say, “two plus two is four, and by the way, since when do vests have anything to do with math? I mean, sure, Santorum’s sweater vest was sort of endearing in a geeky sort of strange way, and yes, I concede, there were no sleeves on vests, that’s why they’re vests and not shirts or sweaters, but can we get back to math? Yes, I have worn a vest at some time in my life. Why are we talking about this? I don’t know how much a vest costs, it would depend on the vest. ”

  20. Todd

    Brilliantly done by Jonah.
