Anchor Babies Showdown: Yoo v. Coulter
Last week, Ricochet contributor and podcast host John Yoo posted Trump No Conservative in Opposing Birthright Citizenship, making the case that Trump’s proposal to end birthright citizenship is unconstitutional. The post generated hundreds of comments, both on and off the site, including this one from our old friend and avid Trump supporter Ann Coulter:
I know it's been a long time out of power, but it's utterly humiliating 4 John Yoo to claim that 150 yrs of S. Ct law supports anchor babies
— Ann Coulter (@AnnCoulter) August 21, 2015
We saw this exchange and promptly booked them for this week’s Ricochet Podcast on Friday 8/28 at 9AM PT/12PM ET. We’ll use a lot of the comments on John’s post as the basis for our debate. So Ricochet members, please join us live in the chat room (the podcast version will be out later that day). Not a member? That’s easy to fix — join today and be part of the great experiment.
It promises to be a Yuuuuge time for all.

Nice going.
Love the graphic.
The clash of the titans. :)
*grabs popcorn*
Indeed. This will be bloody.
Ann Coulter is PR seeking, attention grabbing huckster and phony. She will say whatever she thinks will rile the mob most effectively to gain the spotlight. She does not care about conservatism, she cares about selling books, getting her face on TV, and getting her voice on the air. Whatever credibility she had as a conservative or a voice that deserved to be listened to has completely evaporated. I’m disappointed that Ricochet has chosen to continue to give her a voice. She is cancer for the conservative movement. She throws bombs and fans flames, she plays into and exploits the ugly parts of conservative frustrations and disappointment for her own personal gain.
Shame on Ann and shame on Ricochet for supporting her in any way whatsoever.
Thanks to the always clutch EJHill.
I don’t think Ann Coulter is any of those things. I’m glad she will be debating Professor Yoo. It will be interesting.
I need to clear my schedule for Friday.
Ann said that she doesn’t care if Trump allows abortions in the White House because his immigration ideas were so wonderful.
We’re really lucky to have that disgusting nonsense as one of the faces of conservatism, Marci?
Anne deserves no praise for her support of Trump or the way she has happily abandoned all defense of conservative principles to champion Trump and her new hobby horse of immigration.
Coulter only wants to sell her book. She chose immigration as the topic of her book because she knew it was the most emotional topic and easiest to exploit. She obviously discovered that her relatively more tempered approach the last few years wasn’t getting her the attention she used to get, so she decided it was time to start fires again.
Anyone who is taken in by her vile and opportunistic side show commentary are fools.
Do you write press copy for the RNC at your day job? if not, I recommend sending your resume’. Insulting those of us who support national sovereignty is the national pastime at RNC headquarters.
This is priceless. An Ann Coulter supporter is chastising me for insulting people whom I disagree with.
What insult? I was merely making a career recommendation. It isn’t like a called you a fool. I mean who on earth would address follow readers as fools for picking up a book?
What clever trolling.
If the conservative movement wants to line up behind Coulter and follow her off the cliff, it deserves the ignominy and marginalized, powerless landing spot they find themselves in.
I thought Ann was taller than John…
BThompson, I do not consider Ann Coulter or anyone else to be the “voice of conservatives.” The cool thing about conservatives is that it is a cacophonous chorus of millions of individuals, each with his or her own unbrainwashed opinion. There’s no lockstep political bloc here on this side of the aisle.
She occasionally exceeds the boundaries of polite conversation, but I know of no conservative media celebrities who don’t do that from time to time.
I admired her trilogy–Slander, Treason, and Godless–and I enjoy her humor directed at the Clintons.
Godless was one of the best books I have ever read. I recommend it.
Thank you, Brent. I too, can understand the tactic – (first get attention, then make your point) – without getting my dress over my head. For example, below is the list of ALL the national issues of vital national importance that Jim Gilmore has brought into public discussion, which the MSM (with RNC wink and nod) were heretofore loathe to report:
1. ummmmm…..uhh….hold on, I’m thinking!
hy·per·bo·le
hīˈpərbəlē/
noun
exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
You have a talent for understatement. Unfortunately, I think you’ve wandered into the territory of drawing false equivalency and ignoring that at some point difference of degree crosses the line into difference of kind.
Coulter doesn’t occasionally exceed the boundaries of politeness. It’s her signature and calling card.
And no one is calling anyone “brainwashed.” Straw man much? I also didn’t call her the voice of conservatives. I said “one of the faces of conservatism.” I realize she isn’t the only voice or even the leading voice, but like Trump she deals in bombast and infamy to draw a disproportionate spotlight and overshadow other, smarter voices.
It is hard enough for conservatives to get attention and exposure for their story and viewpoint in the mainstream. Liberal media and commentators love it when people like Coulter offer a buffoonish caricature of intolerant sneering to hold up so they can ignore the likes of Arthur Brooks or Thomas Sowell or any other brilliant conservative who effectively debunks the stereotype of conservatives that the left likes to point to and reinforce.
:) :) :)
I do try. :)
Yes, joking about abandoning the fate of innocent lives in the middle of the tempest involving PP videos showing live born children being killed, cut up and sold for profit is a brilliant use of hyperbole and not at all belittling of the most abhorrent evil of our times.
Is that Ann’s head on another woman’s body? These arms holding the baby seem quite human.
I will listen because I find both Ann and John informative and entertaining. But I think the debate will not be firmly joined. My prediction: Ann will argue that it is not a settled question and that today’s situation is distinguishable from Ark and ripe for a new decision, and, anyway, the Court in Ark got it wrong. (This is the Roe v Wade redo position.) John will say it doesn’t matter whether Ark was decided correctly, it is and has been precedent for a sufficient time that the Court would not overturn it, and (1) the strategies to overturn birthright citizenship will undermine valid Conservative claims as champions of the 14th amendment, and (2) emphasis on birthright citizenship will detract from other enforcement policies and welfare practices whose change would be much more effective without the political fallout. After that it will be a series of “Would too” “Would not” etc.
I’ll take Ann Coulter over the RNC tone police any day.
Neither she nor John Yoo nor anyone else will be permitted to do that on Ricochet.
Sometimes I look at Ann and yell, “Eat something!” But Googling “Toothpick holding a baby” doesn’t produce any hits.
Editorial photoshopping is an inexact art, if it’s art at all.
Just wait a week or two for the next couple of Planned Parenthood videos to be released.
I have deAnnCoulterized Ann’s tweet from this:
“I know it’s been a long time out of power, but it’s utterly humiliating 4 John Yoo to claim that 150 yrs of S. Ct law supports anchor babies.”
to this:
“I disagree with John Yoo’s claim that 150 yrs of S. CT law supports anchor babies.”
Not as punchy or spellbinding. Won’t sell any books. But decent and measured.
Also why is something utterly humiliating instead of just humiliating?
:)
I think she will be at her best. I am completely confident.
I predict an excellent debate.
I am so pleased this is happening here.
How much is the RNC paying you Marion?
Both Trump and Coulter are a little more bold than most are comfortable with.
They may rattle a few cages, which is not always a bad idea. Actually healthy thing.
Shameless of EJ Hill to exploit for political purpose the obvious anchor baby potential of such an image of a mixed marriage, enabling Coulter to return someday from whatever planet she calls home.
