Boo-hoo. Poor, poor multi-millionaire football star...

Give me a break.

His use of that depiction to describe a social trend which he disdains is distasteful bordering on loathsome.

At a tender age -- maybe 10 -- I visited an elderly neighbor. She was a sweet older woman I had known my entire life and she would always serve me cookies and talk to me seriously. At Halloween she was famous for her popcorn balls. One day I wondered aloud why everyone couldn't simply share everything so that no one would be in need and everyone would have enough? She turned on me ferociously and told me that was the worst, most evil system ever and never to mention it aloud again! It was the only time before or since that I ever saw her frown. It made quite an impression. I recommend that.

My eldest son was inspired by Jackie Robinson and at a younger age educated his classmates on his travails and accomplishments. He first learned about segregation through the story of Jackie Robinson where he had a natural interest.

I don't see the harm in elevating Jackie Robinson to icon status. Of course it's not going to attract black players but I disagree that that is the intent. The point is to elevate and celebrate his experience as a history lesson and so it hardly matters how long he has been dead. Being annoyed at the sanctimony of Jackie Robinson Day is like being annoyed by President's Day.

You are far more knowledgeable than I EJ about all things sporting (and most other things as well,) but I think it takes a real curmudgeon to get so pissed off about one game a year.

Nice (and well deserved) props from Jim Geraghty in Morning Jolt this AM. Proud to have read it here first!

The strategy sounds like a toxic combination of Vietnam and Afghanistan. Won't Syria be a lovely place once Assad is gone and the various rebel groups all turn their U.S. supplied arms on one another?

@Mollie - Richard's use of the term hard line is entirely accurate in this context. Rather it is Prager's use of the term "soulless" that is demeaning and deserving of editorial admonishment.

Trace

Hardline merely connotes unyielding and inflexible and seems entirely appropriate in this context. Thank you for this post Richard. I've been finding the air inside the Ricochet big tent extremely close lately. This was refreshing and welcome from a big-C contributor.

Hey Yeti -- Can you post the link to the Dylan Byers Politico piece that John referenced? I can't seem to find it on my own. Thanks.

Says the "man" with an alias and cut-and-paste avatar. Please.

wilber forge: This fella needs to update his profile image. To heck with the egoimage  thing, be real.

As for the Orson part, spot on. · 8 hours ago

Jay Leno had the best line: “And in a groundbreaking move, the Associated Press, the largest news gathering outlet in the world, will no longer use the term ‘illegal immigrant.’ That is out. No longer ‘illegal immigrant.’ They will now use the phrase ‘undocumented Democrat.’

Her death was not noted by the New York Times because she made beef stroganoff and raised three children. If so, the paper would weigh 30 pounds every Sunday. What was of note about her life were her accomplishments as a rocket scientist. The fact that she had a signature dish and took time off work is only interesting because she was also a rocket scientist. The objections were silly, but the initial juxtaposition of the description was a little sophomoric and nothing essential is lost by the edit. Sometimes a molehill is just a molehill.

It strikes me that the yes and yes voters need to answer a follow-up question: Are you now an advocate of full-scale invasion of Iran and North Korea? Surely those regimes, one of which we know already has a weapon of mass destruction with the other imminently close to that status, represent every bit as great a threat as Iraq represented to our safety 10 years ago.

Her outrage was canned, phony and pre-rehearsed and falls into a sub-genre used by female politicians frequently. BUT, it was a trap he fell in to too readily by way of his condescending tone. And yes, he came across as looking as though he did not have respect for her personally, which represents an unforced error on his part.

I like that Cruz does not feel obliged to respect all of the unspoken niceties that normally place Ms. Feinstein above that sort of attack. Her offense was the same brand of offense taken by McCain at Paul's filibuster. But he opened himself up to an exchange which he will probably lose on the Internet by being far too smug. He could have asked the question in a far more respectful and collegial way and not allowed her a way to wiggle out of it.

You know who makes his points forcefully without ever coming across as smug is Paul Ryan. Cruz could learn from Ryan's tone.

Well I disagree with OSC on SSM, but I love his writings and now suspect I know why Ender's Game has never successfully been made into a movie. I had no idea he was a pariah. I'm very sorry for that.

I worked for Time Inc. for a number of years and was amazed to see that the people at the top of the company were simply those that had kept their heads down and pissed off the least number of people. If you could manage not to get fired, over time you would find yourself in charge.

It's why I like the finance world because arguments about rent-seeking and parasitism aside, it is completely a merit based universe where you either contribute and matter or you are not employed.
