Bio

I'm a truck driver. It sounds funny to say that since I really wanted to be one when I was a kid. The truth is that I move missiles around a navy weapons facility. I assuage my guilt of being on the government payroll by the fact that it's defense and not HUD or some other useless federal entity. I joined Ricochet mostly because it feels like a trip to Hollywood with all the stars out walking the streets to be able to converse with the likes of Peter Robinson, John Woo, Rob Long, Victor Hanson, and others. I recently finished my degree in political science at American Military University and hope to find some use for it eventually. If you would like to contact me directly email kingprawn at centurytel.net.

I've recently started blogging about spiritual things.

I just finished watching "The Killing" and it was fantastic. It's the only Seattle show I've ever seen that got lighting right. They still overdo the rain, but that's to be expected. I've lived here 20 years and only put my windshield wipers higher than intermittent a handful of times.

I second the Netflix originals.

Way ahead of you on that. Lindsey popped up on my "Nightwish" Pandora channel.

I wasn't going to put this on here, but...

whitewash

And let's not forget they went so far as to create a video of their own (at our expense, of course) to blame the attack on the youtube video as well. They went to extraordinary lengths to tell this particular lie.

Joseph Paquette: KingP:  "The problem will be taxing some people on all their income (the poor) and others on only a small portion (the wealthy.) "

There is a simple solution for this.  Let's say we don't want anyone who to pay taxes on the first 24,000 dollars they spend.  We have a national sales tax of 10%, every American will get 200 dollars the first of every month.  A 'pre' refund of taxes on each person's spending.  So, the wealthy who spend 5,000 dollars a month will still pay 300 dollars a month in taxes, but someone who spends only 2,000 dollars a month pays none.  The numbers are arbitrary and can be adjusted for any tax rate and level at which you want to start taxing.  No forms.  A simple National VAT.  · 43 minutes ago

As effecient as the government is at incorrectly handing out money from the treasury, I'm not sure I want them cutting everyone a monthly check.

Is a subpoena good enough to get phone records like this, or does it take a warrant? If a warrant is required, did Justice get one or operate on a subpoena? I haven't heard clearly which way the records were obtained.

The King Prawn: I'm starting to get why the Jews considered tax collectors to be right up there with rapists and murderers in the ranks of sinners... · 5 minutes ago

To be fair to the IRS, at least they don't sell off the rights to collect taxes to the highest bidder and allow the tax collector to take an extra cut for his own expenses and profits.

I mean, I hate the IRS too, but credit where it's due ... · 14 minutes ago

Sort of. It's basically the same problem: abuse of power by putting the authority of the state into the hands of an individual.

Frozen Chosen: Many say that the Fair(sales) tax would eliminate the need for the IRS.  While we would still need someone to collect the Fair Tax, at least it would eliminate the need for the IRS to process applications for tax exempt status, which would eliminate the political shenanigans we are now seeing. · 5 minutes ago

I'm more interested in what they can do with guitars.

A time existed when one had to walk into my bubble to encroach on me. Now she can do it on a cell phone, screeching and cackling, from 10 feet away.

As an aside: one of my goals in life is to behave in a manner than causes some snooty woman to exclaim, "Well I never!" just so I can exclaim right back, "Then it's about damned time you did!" I think this a little more appropriate than my friend's goal of being slightly more annoying than Ace Ventura.

Williamson is one of my favorite writers on NR. I salute his efforts to enforce civility.

Technology has, ironically, made us less socially interactive in the real world while simultaneously enabling us to encroach on the personal space of others.

I hope someone alerts Peter, Rob, and James to this incident so they can discuss it with Kevin during the podcast this morning.

The King Prawn: How long did it take the civil society to naturally arise the first time? How long are we willing to wait for it after government collapses (which I think is becoming more likely every day)? · 11 minutes ago

Heh, that's a much better way of putting it then I did. · 7 minutes ago

Also, one might argue that we're a much more developed species this go round, but I would counter that government's intervention has perhaps left us just as savage as before if not more so.

Powerline: "I assume the department obtained whatever warrant was needed."

NYT: "Jay Carney, a White House spokesman, on Tuesday reiterated that the White House had no involvement in the subpoena..."

If the records were seized based on only a subpoena there could be a problem. I haven't read anywhere exactly which instrument was used. Perhaps the lawyerly among us can dig into that.
