Mild-mannered DC nonprofit worker, but also mildly conservative. Reader. Not a full-time cyber guy but big fan of cyber-options. There is a life to be lived apart from the pale glow of the 28" LCD monitor Not as politically astute or observant as many here, but still enjoy the range of comments and opinions expressed.

My 11/7/12 update is: Even more depressed about The Toxic Blight of Obamacare, but we can't give up.

A few years back I spent some time trolling the dating sites. Nothing ever  came of it. But I was surprised how many seemingly interesting women had double whammy -- no bald guys, no Republicans... so that kinda ruled me out.

Conservative women in the public eye/media eye have to have a coat of armor, given everything thrown at them by the party that claims to be champion of women. Seeing what Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman endured from the MSM and the likes of latenight perv Letterman, you wonder why they do it at all. Their treatment was shameful and contemptible.

I have missed all recent DC area meetings because of ... life. But I am determined  to get to one soon, and no, Annapolis isn't too far!

Seems like each decade has a defining sitcom.

1950s-- Honeymooners

1960s Dick Van Dyke Show'

1970s-- All in the Family ( more than MTM Show)

1980s-- Cosby Show

1990s-- Seinfled

2000s-- (unfortunately)  2 1/2 Men

I liked Seinfeld because of its relentless focus on the absolute minutiae in life, and the two years or so were very much on the absurdist side of things.

Denise McAllister: RB---things have changed. That's what I'm worried about. Girls think they want to have fun, but what they really want deep down is to be loved and respected. They just don't realize it. · 22 hours ago

@ D McA-- I do wonder when it began to change. It's just more in the culture now.  They see it on the cover of Cosmopolitan -- the whole emphasis is on being hot, and if you don't have an A+ sex life. etc. you really don't measure up etc. Very damaging, and a misguided message for girls of a certain age.  There were some excellent posts on this in a thread a few weeks ago about that author, Naomi Wolf, who has  new book. Predictably,  V word is in the title.... just so.. .unnecessary.

I'm a middle aged  bachelor. I really don't know what women think or think about. I was vaguely aware of this 50 Shades thing, and the (now old hat) V-Monologues, V-Day (and I don't mean Victory Day) that goes on in academic settings and entertainment circles.

Had seen a pix of the now-deceased country singer Mindy McCready at V-Day hoedown in the last few years. with the likes of Rosie O'Donnell, etc.  Her life was a downward spiral... sad stuff.

So, clearly, things have changed -- but you know 'girls just wanna have fun', etc.

I don't post that often, and am not all that politically strident, etc, but would offer this---

For those not:

In The Modern World of suburban Maryland/Washington, DC... where faded Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers can still occasionally be seen --middle aged, bald Republican males driving 19 year old Hondas with 365K miles having a cassette player THAT IS STILL USED-- are simply not not viewed as acceptable potential partners by 95% of  the eligible females in aforementioned Modern World.

What are you looking for:

Go thru intermittent periods of not looking. I think I could actually do OK with with a Democratic type, but they've already made up their minds about me, so whatever.  So... traditional values, not into conspicuous consumption, etc., church OK. I have reservations about the types  who live for Twitter, etc. but hey.. ..you have to be open minded.

My 2 cents.

Happy New Year --- or as a columnist in today's WSJ put it,

Nothing takes the "happy" out of Happy New Year like the thought of Barack Obama in the White House for four more years.

Agree w/ most and for same reasons. I'll take Paul's upbeat Wonderful Christmastime over John's Vietnam-era Happy Xmas/War is Over. One reason is the instrumentation of Wonderful Christmastime is just plain weird, apart from the sleigh bells.  Don't forget that Ringo had a Christmas album.

I have a real hard time w/ heartfelt renditions of Little Drummer Boy (Chet Atkins had good instrumental version)... but sorry-- none of that Rum Pa Pum Pum stuff around here. The hippo one, Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, etc... can do without.

Grandma Got Run  Over By A Reindeer also in questionable taste.

But for the most part I will take the goofball Christmas songs over the deep/heartfelt ones, like Do They Know It's Christmas, done by a bunch of 80s Britrock dudes.

Two guilty pleasures for me are Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy (at least the original version) and Snoopy's Christmas -- another oldie but goodie.

Thanks for running down the NIH treatment. I'm set up for same thing with same doc. Only difference -- I can walk to NIH from where I live :-)

I have missed all the ones here in DC -- going to make sure to make the next one.

I like the headline today on michellemalkin.com.... regardless what you think of her, the headline is good. "This is what FORWARD" really looks like"

Awhile ago when the O-team came out with that single word campaign line of Forward,  someone here posted a a clever (I thought)  cartoon of him with the sign and all these sheep going over a cliff. I had hoped that would be picked up and widely circulated. It said a lot, also just using that one word.

I happen to be someone who thinks he is a terrible President and NOT a nice guy-- thin skinned, petulant, dismissive, imperious, and absolutely lacking in empathy.

Look Away: I don't think half of the people really "like" him. They say that out of white guilt and rationalize it by thinking; he is a terrible president, but at least he is a nice guy. · 7 hours ago

....cling to guns and religion.

My father was in the Navy -- not in a combat role -- but he had plenty going on here in the States. Like a lot of guys my age, I didn't start to appreciate him until much later. But he was of that generation -- kept his opinions to himself, mostly. One time, in his final few years, when somehow WWII in Europe came up as a  topic he blurted out that that the Third Reich/Nazi regime were "some of the evilest people in history", and a case can certainly be made for that.

But this group is leaving us every day. Something changed after that generation. My generation grew up in post-war prosperity -- I guess that had some effect... and at a certain age we didn't pay much attention to things. Then we got older, and by the time we had to listen to  certain Pres having a 'thin resume coupled with an enormous ego' (as one writer put it) go on about 'remaking America' - we (or at least me-- will speak only for myself)  began to identify with the values and personality traits of this earlier generation and found our own to be somewhat lacking.

This Freedom from Religion group, if they were honest, would call themselves Freedom from Christianity, since that is all they concerned with. If they post ads like this for other world religions, then they can keep their name.

But they won't do that. Forget about them.
