Re: On Anime

Sabrdance:

American animation, to this day, is largely aimed at children with anything else being intended to go over the children's heads to entertain their parents.

For the most part, true, but let us not forget the exceptions:

John Walker: When I went back there in 2011, I was baffled by what I saw.  The mines were closed, turned into museums.  I could see no industry which had replaced them other than tourism, which remains largely seasonal, tied to hunting.  And yet, compared to my first visit, the place was booming.  Now there was a Wal-Mart, a Target, an Office Depot, etc., and lots of new construction, some of which I'd call McMansions.

Houses were well-maintained, the downtown was not shuttered, and community services appeared to be preserved.

Interesting.  So, a place can survive with a solely service-based economy?

If it can bring in enough tourism dollars to tide the community over during the off-season.

Another thought:

How come for women "not growing up" seems to mean sex, drugs, and alcohol, while for men it seems to mean "superhero movies, computer games, and general silliness."

According to our mass media masters, that is.

The poster child for arrested female development is someone like Ke$ha, while the poster child for arrested male development is someone like Seth Rogan.

Ok, Rogan's persona is no role model, but it's better than being a drugged-out whore, no?

Why do young women think "cool" means self-destruction?

Pilli: We have heard forever that we should "live every day like it is our last".  That should mean that we must value life and that we ought to do what is right and good and moral not that we throw caution to the wind and party till we drop.

Seems the meaning might have gotten lost during the "Me" generation.

Now, how come I cannot get a rifle in the shape of the VF-1's main gun?

Cornelius Julius Sebastian:  If had to pick the top 5 anime for story, coherence and least "transgressive" themes, what would they be?  Would the 4 you cited above be among them?

Macross Zero is awesome, with better dogfights than Top Gun.

Cat S*%t One is fantastic. Probably the most pro-American war story of the past generation. (The Japanese word for rabbit is "usagi". Get it?  USA G.I.)

I don't watch a LOT of Anime, actually.  Can I round out my top five with tv shows from the 70s and 80s?

Fables of The Green Forest

Belle and Sebastian

Anime is way too big and diverse a spectrum of genres to be explained as a cohesive whole.

At one end you have Studio Ghibli. At the other end you have cheap cartoon tentacle porn. In the middle there's all sorts of different stuff.

One might as well ask, "what is the appeal of American movies?"

You cannot have one answer to such a broad question.

That is, unless you actually are watching an instructional video.

The smart-aleck in me wants to say, "1950s wives."

RushBabe49: We Baby Boomers are the ones who coined the phrase "I may get older, but I don't have to grow up".  If that's true, then is there really an adult in the room, or are we all adolescents forever?

Well, it depends on how one defines "grown up".

When one says "grown up", does one mean "taking responsibility for one's actions" or does one mean "never having any fun ever again"?

I can see how many boomers could have looked at their parents and thought, "they don't seem to be enjoying life very much."

Saying, "I may be getting older but I refuse to grow up" could simply mean "no matter what my responsibilities, I'm not gonna replace paintball, computer games, and comic books with golf, polyester, and martinis."

On the other hand, if "refusing to grow up" means "I'm gonna live like my parents still pay for everything and the courts cannot try me as an adult," then there's a problem.

Misthiocracy

If we lived like there was no tomorrow, doesn't that mean we'd spend each day in the corner of the room in the foetal position crying in terror?

How about a list of the most erotic non-sex scenes.

Like the chess game from The Thomas Crown Affair.

Or the card game at the beginning of Barry Lyndon.

"I have hidden a ribbon somewhere on my body..."

Or Worf and K'Ehleyr training in the Holodeck.

Edward Smith:

The worst sex scene I ever saw was inElizabethwhen the director sees fit to let the audience follow Elizabeth and Robert Dudley into the bedchamber.  It was completely unnecessary, and added nothing to the story.

Well, it did make the point that she wasn't actually a virgin.

Of course, they could have made the same point by showing us her illegitimate offspring.

I guess a nearly-naked Joseph Fiennes puts more bums in seats than screaming babies do.

Please note that Avril Lavigne is pushing 30.

Also note that Lavigne, Ke$ha, and Carly Rae Jepson (all three teeny-bopper type singers) are all OLDER by several years than Adele, who is a much more mature singer, songwriter, and indeed person.

I dunno what point I'm trying to make.  I'm just sayin'...

I will say that I much prefer the music of Lily Allen (same age as Avril Lavigne) who sings about the trials and tribulations of growing up in the 21st century, rather than glorifying self-destructive youthful behaviour.

Note: Both Lily Allen and Adele are mothers.  I'm sure it's just a coincidence that their lyrics are more mature and meaningful.

Victor Grant 1865:

One was the scene between Clint Eastwood and Jessica Walter in "Play Misty For Me" where they were in the forest and I seem to remember it being shot from a long distance.

I'll never be able to watch Arrested Development in the same way again, knowing that Lucille Bluth is the woman from Play Misty For Me.
