I'm with you on Christie, Mr. Davis.  The positives Christie brings to the table outweigh the negatives.  And we conservatives as a movement grow by addition, not subtraction.

Jonathan Werner

Done.  Now I suppose I should actually start reading your blog....;)

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and recently I moved my family to Irvine, California (Orange County) to be closer to work.  There are still pockets of prosperity (and sanity) in states like California, Orange County being one such rare example.

I'm a lawyer, and because California is crawling with us, the state doesn't offer license reciprocity to any other state (to try to discourage more of us from coming here).  As a result, I'm not aware of any other state that offers reciprocity to California lawyers in return.  So, it's not so simple to just pack up and leave.

I have looked around, and if things continue to go down the drain here, my first pick would be Texas.  As with so much else in that Mecca, they make it relatively easy for out of state lawyers to gain admission to their bar.  Plus, according to Joshua Trevino, despite my handicap (being a lawyer), Texas will welcome me, my family, and my money with open arms.  ;)

I'd like to respond to the "outing" incident.  I've done some quick googling on the subject, and the backstory seems rather murkier than the comments on this thread might otherwise suggest.

Moreover, I've followed GOProud and Jimmy LaSalvia fairly closely over the past couple of years (Twitter, FB, YouTube, their website, etc.) and frankly, I haven't found a particularly malicious streak in either Mr. LaSalvia or the organization as a whole.

In fact, I think it would be incredibly beneficial if the Yeti/Rob/Peter/James could arrange to have LaSalvia or some other rep from GOProud appear as a guest on the podcast, to give their perspective on both the "outing" incident and the CPAC exclusion.

BTW, who added the link to my original post?  That wasn't there in the original?  Thanks for doing that!

BrentB67: With all do respect claiming to be God-fearing and totally in favor of gay 'marriage' all week long is an oxymoron.

Great comments all.  With respect to the above quote , all I can say is, my position on SSM is more libertarian than conservative, which does not suggest, much less require, any conflict with my Christian faith.

And here's why: the state has no business getting involved in marriage beyond recognizing civil unions, as doing otherwise dangerously expands the power of government in any number of ways (just take tax breaks for starters) at the expense of civil society (this also implies that government should also refrain from forcing churches and other civil society organizations, such as the BSA, from recognizing unions they deem incompatible with their organization's beliefs).  In a republic such as ours, which is explicitly based on the ideal of individual liberty, gays' civil unions should be recognized on the same basis as heteros' unions as a means of preserving their fundamental dignity as individuals.
At least that's what I believe.

Austin or Nashville.

"Feckless crapweasel."  I'd like Jonah to (a) define this term; and (b) explain its etymology.

I'm sorry, but I read the article and find it utterly repulsive.  Views like this have no place in the conservative movement, and if we on the Right don't remain vigilant about pushing out the nutters in our ranks (think WFB and the Birchers), we risk becoming a marginalized force in American politics.  And deservedly so.

As a lawyer, I can tell you that I abhor text messages, because they are ephemeral.  Most carriers delete text messages on their servers after a few days, making them virtually irretrievable.  Without the relative permanence of emails, how else am I supposed to find a smoking gun in a case???

Jonathan Werner

I'll be there with my wife.  So "+1."

I'm sorry.  These scientists may be experts as designing and building atomic bombs, but what makes them experts at understanding, let alone predicting, the geopolitics of their use, which is what the Doomsday Clock really is?

I've always derided this stupid clock as but another example of highly trained, highly specialized experts sticking their noses into an area in which they have no particular expertise.  Want proof?  Look how unsuccessful their past predictions have been.

Jonathan Werner

I agree.  I just like the idea of having this periodic, ongoing debate about how much the government should be reaching into our pockets.  It seems to me to be territory which conservatives can best fight on.  I'm not to the point where I would agree with including sunsets in all tax cut provisions, but I'm beginning to think that we as conservatives need to think of creative ways to keep taxes constantly on the public radar (i.e., every Congressional election cycle).

It's also interesting to note that the cost of elective surgery has gone down dramatically, dare I say because of the operation of a free, open and competitive market for the services.

Is "all of the above" an acceptable answer?  This is America, after all.  We're supposed to be able to have our cake and eat it, too.

...reprimanded by security because as Dolly was singing, they were standing up, waving their arms and shouting at everyone around them to get up and cheer.  Tony looked absolutely mortified.  It was classic.  If it wasn't so dark, I would have taken a picture with my camera phone, because he was literally burying his head in his face and wishing he were anywhere but there.  He was probably thinking to himself, "thanks for the campaign donations, morons, but next time, I'll pass on the Bowl tickets."

Finally, I have one quick question: I spotted your box off to the right of the stage at some point before the show started.  And I believe I spotted a certain bearded gentleman who recently took to wearing bow ties.  Was that who I thought it was?
