Considering all Huffpo can talk about is Rubio actually drinking water, I'd say it was a success.

Re: Marco

Some may criticize the move to do this in Spanish as well, but on Spanish language radio today it's ALL they were talking about. He had some supporters and some haters, but he was the ENTIRE conversation. He's on the average Spanish speaker's radar in a new way now.

You bring up a good point because it seems simple to an outsider but it is not. The fact that you think the issue boils down to "discovery of voluntary abdication due to old age" is telling.
Trying to understand Catholic Church from the outside is problematic. It is a mystical construct as much if not more than a physical / social one.  It's like trying to understand Buddhism without a being a serious student of it.

Joe Escalante

Probably not. I believe he is a genius for many reasons. In the post, I articulated the reasons why I think his latest move is genius. Then I clarified by saying that is was possibly not genius, but divine. There's no flippancy. This is my opinion, that's what we do here. We express opinions.

Tom Meyer

Joe Escalante: Divinely inspired is probably what it actually was. In fact "brilliant" is probably an insult to what it really was, which is something we probably can't define with our peanut sized brains.

Huh?

I know you're being flippant here, but I thought you were being serious when you described Benedict's decision as "brilliant" and "genius."  Stipulating that it was smart and for the best, I don't see how it deserves that description.  Could you explain? · 1 hour ago

Tom Meyer: I certainly see the benefits of the decision -- for the pope, the papacy, and the church -- and appreciate that breaking with tradition on this takes some guts... but isn't it a bit much to call it "brilliant"? · 48 minutes ago

Those are called angels.

genferei: Aren't you going to have shadowy figures saying "the real, I mean former, Holy Father is not pleased with..."? · 9 hours ago

But dementia is when the shadowy figures start to hover and claim to speak for the Pope "who can't exactly express himself in his current state."

"When the Holy Father meant to say was........"

That's what scares me, and probably B-XVI

Because of his timing on the issue, the quality of the speech, and the leanings of the state controlled media, the impression people will walk away with is that the borders are under control.

Chris Deleon

Joe Escalante: I have no idea if it's true, and since this president said it I have my doubts, but he really took the wind out of the "floodgates" argument (as far as talking points go) with his stunning statistic that illegal border crossings are down 80% from their highs in 2000.

That's an obsolete statistic, as is typical.  Recent figures indicate illegal immigration is on the upswing again: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/jan/29/arrests-signal-9-percent-jump-illegal-immigration/ · 3 hours ago

Shameless, but here goes:

I'm glad these figures are getting some exposure. O'Reilly lead with it last night and did a great job exposing this scandal. If you missed it:  http://www.foxnews.com/on-air/oreilly/index.html#/v/2081918892001/aborting-babies-at-taxpayers-expense/?playlist_id=86923

The new Archbishop of S.F., Salvatore Cordileone,  may do just that. Add him to the hat-trick.

That would be up to the bishop of San Francisco, I believe. · 17 hours ago

It was Hugh Hewitt that addressed our group, not Prager, as I wrote. Regarding your confusion over Catholics. You have every right to be confused.

Lavaux: Chaput appeared on the Hugh Hewitt show for a long interview earlier this week. Chaput said something to the effect that Catholic clerics in his generation put "social justice" (whatever that is) on a pedestal, but that this movement leftwards is stalling.

Most self-identifying Catholics voted for Obama whereas most mass-attending Catholics voted for Romney, so you can't blame the parish priests for that. Still, Catholics are muddle to me - I can't wrap my head around them - so I can't figure out where they fit in the political calculus. · 12 hours ago

They use polls to see if the N.F.L. Jumbotron is accurate?  That's no way to predict the next P.O.T.U.S.

Hispanic Catholic Vote

As a radio host myself, filling in often on KFI and KABC in L.A.,  I'm also offended by this epithet. Regarding Hispanics, many of my Mexican relatives are on auto pilot for Obama. I was able to persuade my immigrant father in law to vote against Obama in 2008, but that kind of one-to-one marketing isn't very efficient.
The Catholic Church is doing the best work in this area. The good parishes (also the crowded ones) explain to the flock the importance of voting for pro-life candidates ONLY. They don't just do it once either. They've been hammering it home here in So. California to a primarily ethnic audience for months on end, every week, (every day even) over and over and over. They are not resting, I assure you.

This message in my parish is actually preached in Spanish at the daily mass, literally every day. It is said that only 20% of U.S. Catholics practice their faith faithfully but I have to believe the figure is much higher among ethnic minorities who (to a larger extent) recognize the sanctity of personal sacrifice.
