Have mercy, I can practically taste the Gumbo.

Gus Marvinson

Go Joe! I sincerely wish you were in Riverside County--almost as much as I wish I lived in another state.

Gus Marvinson

Adam, you've got another sale! I look forward to reading it.

Gus Marvinson

Excellent. I'll add a pet peeve of my own: Don't use "utilize" when "use" will do, which is damn near always.

Gus Marvinson

Dr. Rahe,

No one is always "well informed."

The Greek word translated "church" is ecclesia, which means "a gathering" (of people, of wood, of frisbees...). In the NT it usually referred to a small group of Christians who met in houses, not a building specially built or equipped for the purpose.

Tertullian was a superior fellow, but he was not an author of any Biblical text and has no primary authority. Not with me, anyway. I don't wish to offend my fellow Ricocheteers (?) who happen to be Roman Catholic, but the NT "church" is as far from Roman Catholicism as the 2012 United States government is from  1789 U.S. government, post-ratification.

A first century Christian, especially one who lived prior to A.D. 70, would find modern Catholicism unrecognizable.

When Romney has the delegates he needs to be the GOP nominee he will get my unwavering support. Until then, he hasn't earned it, he ain't gettin' it.

Gus Marvinson: Constitutional originalism: check.

Economics: check.

Foreign policy: check. (On several occasions, Dr. Victor Davis Hanson has stated publicly, on a recent Ricochet podcast as a matter of fact, that he "really likes Sarah Palin." VDH knows or cares nothing of foreign policy, right?)

Energy policy: check.

Yes, there's that.

Show me a national politician who is demonstrably stronger than Palin across the wide range of specific issues a president must deal with. For instance, our "presumptive nominee," Romney, doesn't even have a conservative record in public office. If you did an honest point by point comparison between Romney and Palin, Romney would get clobbered.

Fricosis Guy: Gus,  I knew who Sarah Palin was well before McCain picked her.   There's a lot to like, but I worry that she'll end up as a burnt-up meteor, not a star:

  • Experience:  The fact remains that she served less than one term as Governor.  I know very well why she resigned, but.quitting for good cause doesn't = experience.
  • Knowledge:  Of course my comment was vacuous, I had 200 words and don't have time to dig out examples.   Do you really think she's has command of a wide range of issues?
  • Desire: I grant your point re: PR.  I have misgivings about some of her choices, but the Today move was inspired.

Gus Marvinson: Fricosis,

Experience: Just a tiny bit of effort reveals....

Knowledge:This is a vacuous statement. Again, where is the evidence that she doesn't apply herself to gaining knowledge?

Desire: To your third point, PR is part of the political life. · 59 minutes ago

She is an originalist who understands and believes in our 4,440 word Constitution. And yes, I believe she understands a broad swath of subjects.

Gus Marvinson

Fricosis,

Experience: She didn't make it through one term as governor.  If Romney was a quitter for not running for reelection, what will Palin get called for quitting mid-term?

Just a tiny bit of effort reveals that she resigned because:

A) Frivolous ethics charges tied up staff time and prevented her from doing what she was elected to do.

B) She had already accomplished in 2 1/2 years what previous governors never came close to accomplishing. Primarily, rooting out corruption, forcing oil companies to follow the Alaska Constitution, balancing the state's budget and creating a rainy day fund.

C) Those ethics charges put her $500,000 in debt.

D) By resigning, she put the good of the State above her political career. "Politically, if I die, I die." That's reason to support her, right there.

However, there are topics on which it is clear that she skimmed the briefing book.  IMO she has the smarts, but will she apply herself enough to avoid bureaucratic bamboozling?

This is a vacuous statement. Again, where is the evidence that she doesn't apply herself to gaining knowledge?

To your third point, PR is part of the political life.

I'm still waiting for someone to show me where Palin is lacking, issue by issue, talent by talent, experience by experience, against other nationally known politicians. The condescension toward her by even conservative pundits is bewildering.

Gus Marvinson

And she would make a better president than anyone, anyone, the smart people put forward. Compare records and accomplishments and also compare what others owe to donors in quid pro quo and what Palin owes to anyone.  My fear is that we'll continue to jerk around with politicians who don't quite "get it" before a Palin or Palin-like candidate has a chance to implement some "sudden and relentless reform" and our country is lost to the timid and the left.

Gus Marvinson
PracticalMary: Palin would make a great president- and a great Republican candidate and my husband and I were very disappointed she dropped out. It's her decision anytime of course, and while I would hesitate to say her political career is over her media career is only good for conservatives. Another thought is she re-setting her image, because the more she's seen the less the lies can work. A thought I've had on some of brokered convention articles is it would be entirely fitting for her to win the nomination without spending a dime in the primaries (I know, a pipe dream and that is why I didn't comment). It would also be a huge hit on the idea a candidate must money grub so much and practically buy the election (esp. Obama), and her claim that she is beholden to no one but the electorate. · 2 minutes ago

Yes. Palin is analyzed from every possible perspective by some very smart people who are frustrated that they can't find a pattern. They miss the point. She does what she wants to promote conservatism, and does what she wants very well.

Gus Marvinson
Von Clausewitz: I certainly did enjoy all the squirming on MSNBC  this weekend. Their lefty roundtable tried their best to minimize her but she is so good they couldn't help but like her. Of course the Republican Party hates her too but  it's the same reason the left does.  They both fear a strong articulate conservative. · 4 hours ago

Because the GOP is led by nitwits I feel no allegiance to them. It is an honor to be a conservative; it's embarrassing to be a Republican.

Gus Marvinson
Nicegrizzly: She looked different. Her face was sharper and tighter, not as pretty and soft as I remember.. I hope she lets her natural beauty shine through and doesn't opt for more cosmetic procedures. · 2 hours ago

What? Who cares about how she looks? What about her efforts to promote the conservative cause no matter how stupid Lauer's questions were?

How about a post on whether Rubio should continue with his "comb over" or just cut it close and embrace his baldness? Or maybe a post on whether Romney should continue to color his hair or flaunt the grey?
