Bio

What can I say that wouldn't apply to Any Man (or isn't on Facebook)?:  You're born, Life's a bitch, and then you die.  Please God, you have at least a toehold on the path to Righteousness and have made some progress on the way (Ps. 1:6).  As my priestly brother says:  "It's the Church's job to get as many people as possible into Purgatory."

On a more mundane level, in 2006 my daughter said she was taking a course called "Current History:  The U.S. 1945-Present".
"History?!?", I said.  "History?!?  That's not 'history'.  That's my life!"

Q10 was about the Amazon Basin; your answer was for the rain forest.  A10 is C. Continental Drift (possibly anthropogenic).

15.  A government and economic system that uses the mechanism of taxation to create social and economic equality is known as what?

A.  Democracy  B.  Socialism  C.  Capitalism  D.  Communism

The question is very confused.  Democracy is a political form, not an economic system; Capitalism is an economic form, not a political system. That aside, Democracy uses taxation to counter unequal economic outcomes.

This really is like being back in 9th grade.  I got Q20 right, but I had my fingers crossed.

Mean Grendel the River Pirate, LLC is my real, illegal business name.

And it's a thumbnail, maybe an icon, but NOT an avatar.

Another Progressive solution that doesn't work for a problem that doesn't exist.

This seems like fertile recruiting ground for the Anarchists United for Obstruction (AUO), a radical middle-of-the-road group opposed to motion in any direction.  You are welcome to muse vapidly on their war cries, such as "Fifty-four forty or faint" and "When in doubt, hesitate".

I would have posted sooner, but there were other things I might have been doing.

When I download the MP3 file, I get the stupid Super Heroes show.

The liberals were lying.  Perhaps to themselves.  They do that--lie--a lot.

I'm still trying to grow up. · 3 minutes ago

Don't bother.  It's not worth it.

Thirty Something.

I am familiar with only four of the original list.  Cheers and Friends were OK and set you up for the show.  Gilligan was as awful as the show.

I don't remember the Rockford Files theme, but I do recall that it was kinda fun.

How many people are putting forward themes to shows they did not like?  Not many, I bet.

Molly's right, but the real dislocation is casting it as a program of national import.  People devote themselves to public welfare for lots of reasons and in lots of ways.  EMT qualification is way down the list of national needs.  Probably more useful would be more widespread knowledge of what to do until the EMTs arrive.  A federal grant program might be aimed at the wrong target, as it would probably be gold-plated and hemmed about with measures to prevent wastefraudandabuse.

As for risky industrial sites, the company should be ensuring that there are enough appropriately trained persons to deal with the big ones that could overwhelm the professional medical people available.

VDH doesn't like Obama because BHO doesn't like America.

Of course he doesn't like America.  He's a Democrat, and Democrats are not American except in the narrowest legalistic sense.  How can you claim to be an American when you loathe the Constitution and despise the Declaration?  Obama, being a narcissist and not having been raised in America, just has a weaker sense of what it is politic to say.

Ignoring the fact that this is a blatant attempt for a 100-comment post using the tried-and-true method of a narcissistic topic on a weekend . . .

I'm a cradle Catholic whose father gave him a copy of Conscience of a Conservative at 15.  I grew up hating Communism and other collectivist creeds.  Islam is little different.  For a long time, now, I've liked the label Libertarian-Traditionalist.  I would be happy to privatize the lighthouses, but the Libertarian fantasy that there exist only State and individuals with no mediating institutions or structures strikes me as being an a priori assertion of what Fascists fervently seek as the state of perfection.

Fred Cole: Why is it that people always feel the need to stick their snouts into other people's affairs?  What arrogance it is to presume that you know whats best for everyone and you know how best to live other people's lives, especially strangers that you do not know and have never met. · 21 minutes ago

Because we aren't solipsists who think the world is remade anew every instant.  I realize yours is a rhetorical question, since you have been around Ricochet long enough to know the answers, and this question is  the skeptic's corrosive tactic of putting What-Is on trial, forgetting for the moment that Darwin didn't spend his life churning out tightly focused monographs on the life cycle of lichens.  It is pretty arrogant to think your experience and existence are so singular that no one else's have any bearing on them.

By the way, do you have change for a three-dollar bill?

Thanks, Carl.  On that first ride, I hope all the smooching and PDA didn't embarrass you.

And thank you, WC and 10 cent, also.

I'm doing my taxes and the remaining dependent child's taxes.  H&R Block's Basic does it for the the Federal pretty well, and PA has a flat state tax that I can take care of on a PDF form, but in PA one gets hit with local Earned Income Tax (EIT) and Local Service Tax (LST), etc. from places one has never heard of.  This is particularly annoying for me, since I am an IT consultant and often work 2-3 jobs a year through an agency.  Even   if I don't work in a municipality, if the agency has an office there I have to pay taxes.  Even with the Internet, getting forms and laws is very time-consuming.

Rather than DS being collectivist, he could be (A) in the throes of the "way it's s'posed to be" impulse that kids can go through, or he could be (B) opportunistically appealing to high principle to support his self-interested claims, like my cousins.  My aunt was literally a saint but a bit of a happy-happy Pollyanna.  Consequently, when one of her three sons wanted something one of brothers had, he'd declare "We must learn to share".  They all grew up to be conservative and two recently retired from the military.

If it's (A) and he doesn't grow out of the "way it's s'posed to be" idee fixe, you'll be raising another Ralph Nader ,and we'll be wishing you had taken him for half of a long ride into the country.
