My main issue with this track from the Pope (and the Bishops' letter to Regan in the 80s) is that it is pretty much against Church doctrine. I'm not up on what happens when one Pope disagrees with an encyclical of a previous Pope (or two in this case). I would recommend people look up the Rerum Novarum published by Leo XIII in 1891 and the Quadragesimo Anno (40 years) of Pius XI in 1931(though that does water down the Rerum Novarum with some redistributionism). Both these encyclicals come out very much on the side of private property rights and the importance of free markets. They do include exhortations to treat employees well, which obviously makes sense.

mask: The woman who was actually in charge of determinations when most of this was going was in now running the ObamaCare division and received $100,000 in bonuses for her past work at the IRS. · 3 hours ago

Yup, that's right, Sarah Hall Ingram, who makes $175,000 a year, without bonuses (around $35k a year since she started targeting Tea Party groups) left the Tax Exempt division to go to the Obamacare implementation group 10 days ago. So, this guy is a patsy.

Between the US and Israel this could be a major geo-political game changer. I understand that some European countries are already trying to negotiate with Israel for NG, seeing North African and Gulf states as too unstable for long term deals.

It doesn't look good, whatever the story is.

Evan Pokroy

Yeah, I wasn't sure who got there first.

wmartin: Obama 288      Romney 250

Romney takes Colorado and Iowa but loses Virginia. · 5 hours ago

I don't see there is any way for Obama to win VA.  NV is going blue. I'm hopeful for an Ohio victory and I'm with Barone that Pennsylvania has a good chance of flipping red. New Hampshire as well. Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota all stay blue. Romney 305. Obama 233.

How does this work for folks who have joined with year subscriptions in the last couple months?

I don't see renewing 10 months early as feasible.

Evan Pokroy

Well, they tied, which wasn't horrible. Which is more than I can say for my Sprinkboks.

I am, unfortunately, in agreement about Nevada. It's my home state and I still have lots of family there. A relative in Las Vegas says the union machine was bussing in people to register to vote. While it may be that the Hispanic vote won't fall lock step into the Obama camp, there are lots of ex-California folk who ran away from the disaster happening over there who still vote the same line. I would be shocked if NV went red. Even if Reno and the rural counties go for Romney.

I'm certainly hopeful about New Hampshire. A friend who works for the GOP says volunteer morale is through the roof and the GOTV is in high gear.

All y'all are missing the point.

When CodePink members are undecided then Obama has some serious problems.

Evan Pokroy

Even PPP has Romney up 50%-46%. I'm assuming the KOSkids are crying.

I understand the issues with Atlas and the Fountainhead. Rand wasn't known for her belief in traditional family values. Anthem is an excellent read, but is not might be good for a weekend reading assignment, it's very short and to the point.

My only caveat about We The Living is that it is painfully depressing, unrelentingly so. This might turn off a lot of American kids not used to this level of horror and depression in fiction.

There's some fascinating break downs in the NV Survey USA poll. The poll is D +7, which probably isn't too far off in Nevada these days. Lots of influx of CA retirees who want a lower cost of living, even though Obama took NV by 12 in '08. There is some serious erosion of Obama's hold on minorities though. 81% of African Americans and only 54% of Hispanics plan on voting for him. That's significantly lower than even John Kerry got in '04.

It might have something to do with the 22% U-6 numbers in the state, but that's speculation on my part.

Evan Pokroy

Is that Rasmussen number at the top national?

Let the record show that B'Tselem is as much of a "Human Rights" group as the UN Human Rights Council. They have a history of using statistics that can't be confirmed, anecdotal evidence with no proof and go out of their way to protect terrorists.

Additionally, I know first hand how seriously the Israeli police treats even a whiff of "settler violence" while turning a blind eye to attacks on settlers.

Zafar: Quite a letter!!  Also contained:

Rights violations resulting from Israeli settlement activity include separate and unequal legal systems for Palestinians and settlers, confiscation of Palestinian land and natural resources for the benefit of settlers, and violence by settlers against Palestinians.

According to the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem and the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, there has been a dramatic rise in settler attacks ...intended to drive Palestinians from areas the settlers wish to take over, and...Israeli authorities have failed to...stop the violence or hold the perpetrators accountable. · 5 minutes ago
