We're out here, waiting for 2014.

Matthew Hennessey:

In high school, Family Life gave way to Health class.

Actually, "Health class" was the 5th grade designation in the 50's, at least in Grand Rapids, MI. The girls learned about menstruation and pregnancy (emphasizing the perils of getting cozy with the boys) and in a separate room we boys sat bored, wondering what the girls were learning. I think we boys learned to brush our teeth, wash our hands, and bathe often. We didn't even learn why the heck we got a boner from time to time.

This (picture) is the kind of self-destructive propaganda that has kept the Libertarian Party in the xtreme minority.

I get it, man, but COOL IT!.  I spent some years in Russia  myself.   You ought to know better!

Will your daughter get any in-class exposure to Austrian Econ?

As a first-order critique, consider that politicians love Keynes! they get to spend the money and it doesn't even matter what for! What kind of mischief do you suppose that leads to?

Dan Hanson: For those who don't know, a psychiatrist has gone through medical school and residency and has an MD.

Well, I do know the difference. The MD can quote more eloquently the absurd Freudian-Jungian sophistry. It's ridiculous.

I'm reminded of a meeting of a dozen or so technical guys, led by a former Space Shuttle Flight Director,  a can-do, will-do guy. He sought our opinions.

At one point, I leaned into my neighbor's ear to whisper something. Our leader abruptly swung his gaze to us and forcefully said, "There's one conversation going on in this room, and I'm having it!"

He was a great leader, and a pleasure to work for.

Byron Horatio: Cashiers were not necsesarily replaced by self-checkout machines because of the advance in technology, but that because you had to pay an employee more and more for a low-skill job....  · 1 hour ago

I get your point.

But even a low-skill employee cannot exist on $0.10 / hour which is what I pay my robot.

We have a new paradigm here.  I don't know what should be done with the low-skilled citizens.

If you don't know anything about the person, I suppose credit rating wld be the the place to start regarding basic character.

The Republicans are now identified with the rich in the public mind. Republicans should be identified instead as a party of principles.

I like those proposals by which the Republicans vote 'present', let the Left run riot, and hope to rise again out of the ensuing disaster.

God help us, all.

(Oh... and Merry Christmas)

Greg Lukianoff, Guest Contributor: As an aside, the posters earned a place of honor in my playfully titled "Censored: Top 10 Pics Too Hot For Campus," which I published last month on The Huffington Post  · · 7 hours ago

I appreciated your post and enjoyed your video. But you need to pay attention to your production quality - some of your top 10 pics were unreadable. Maybe this was caused by Huffington Post, but please take care. Good luck to you.

Duane Oyen:  It was the perfect "bootleggers and Baptists" scenario: Lefties wanted to eliminate in-patient commitment; conservatives wanted to eliminate the state hospitals' budget lines.

Libertarians, conservatives and liberals had a principled stance: People should not be incarcerated against their wills. The science of mental health is very poorly developed - we know very little about it, even what it is. Witness the ridiculous DSM.

one key aspect to every medical diagnosis in the DSM, your symptoms must cause profound difficulty in daily living.

You cannot be serious. This is the ultimate subjective metric.

If I can't hold a job because I'm the kind of alcoholic who can't get up before noon or because I show up to work drunk...  that's a profound difficulty in daily living.

Wow. This is exactly what I had in mind in my original post. I actually do know a guy who gets full disability because "he's the kind of alcoholic who shows up to work drunk..."

That kind of alcoholic, dear Fred, needs more than a little hardship. He needs to fall so far to earth that he will be forced to take charge of his life. It happens on a daily basis at AA.

Wow.

Amy Schley

David John:

I, for example, am BI-POLAR, confirmed by my daily symptoms of being more, or less, energetic than last week.  I was manic today, but yesterday I was kinda down in the dumps for some reason... and the reason was, I’m bi-polar. Gimme some Zoloft. Smooth me to a plane.

I understand that you're being hyperbolic to make a point, but as someone currently suffering from depression, this attitude really offends me.  Do you know how tough it is to get medication?

...

While my suicidal depression was put into recovery through Zoloft, after just three visits to the county clinic I was informed that I was no longer eligible for any psychiatric help... · 52 minutes ago

Amy, I'm very sorry to cause offense, and I sympathize with your condition. Please accept my apology. My comments were flip and inconsiderate.

Have you ever listened to "Happiness Hour", Dennis Praeger? Each Friday.  I recommend it.

Good luck to you.

David John: By the way, what's so expensive about Ricochet? How much are we paying these Main Feed contributors?  Can you publish some summary accounting?

(And don't pay that website manager too much - there are plenty of members who'd do it for free). · 20 minutes ago

Ever shopped for web hosting that can handle 400,000-500,000 visitors to a given site in a 24-hour period?

It ain't cheap. · 3 hours ago

Yes, I've shopped and bought. It's cheap, a minor expense,

Here's a short term idea: Facilitate giving Ricochet subscriptions (say, for a whole year), as Christmas gifts! Buyers receive a Christmas card kinda thing that can be given physically, maybe. I know, a printout to be folded into card for giving.

I just might give one myself, if it was fancy enough for my elegant taste in gifts!

It's just crazy enough, it just might work!
