The Cypriots gave up the tried and true method for dealing with their financial situation when they hitched their wagon to the Euro.  We still have that option available - printing money and inflating our currency.

Overall measured rankings:  Cal Tech, Stanford, Oxford, Harvard, MIT - sounds about right.

Very sharp analysis.  Before getting depressed keep in mind that his analysis is based on registered voters.  The key to a possible bigger Romney win is the conversion of registered voters to actual voters.  There is some evidence that the conversion of potential Romney supporters to actual voters will be higher this year, so this analysis would be a worst case scenario.

Troy Senik, Ed.: Peter, rule of thumb: never trust someone who spells NFL with periods in it.

Seriously - N.F.L.?  Enough said.

I agree that Romney should try to win big if that is a possible outcome.  There is a lot less of a chance that Democrats will try to "de-legitimize" his election if he has 300+ EV's than if he has 271.

They are out of yard signs because the demand was so high.  I have an acquaintance involved with Romney's GOTV effort in Ohio and he says that they have the best GOTV effort - ever.  They are approaching exceeding their metrics by 100%.

Duane Oyen: A cross between The Economist and Atlantic, published by Roger Ailes, and edited by the late Michael Kelly.  I'll sign up now.

The only subscriptions I have now are to Weekly Standard(for everything  except Bill Kristol's weekly screed about how the GoP should be campaigning exclusively on promising another Afghan surge), and Popular Mechanics, because it has a lot of interesting techie stuff, and I like gadgets. · 4 hours ago

Amen, brother.  I still mourn the day Michael Kelly died.

VP debates usually don't matter, but I think this one will for the reason's Mollie points out.  My wife made a very similar comment last night.  Hers was NSFW, but let's just say she found him intensely unlikable.

I agree that the New Yorker cover is shocking - kind of like having a Sarah Palin editorial on in the NYT.  But it is not possible to overstate how deeply held ideas, like Obama's perfection, are held by liberal true believers.  Having worked in higher education, I have met liberal professors who were unabashed fans of Stalin - an extreme example of hanging on to failed leftist ideas, to be sure.   It's wound up in the fiber of their being and one bad debate performance is not going to pry it loose.

Perfect!

I saw this in my twitter feed last night - of the millions of tweets last night, this was by far the best.  We are still laughing.

One thing I will say about the Obama campaign is that they are doing a brilliant job.  Given the horrible economic circumstances and his abysmal record, to be essentially tied at this point is quite an accomplishment.  The "information warfare" part of their campaign - giving the air of impending victory, drilling in the idea that their opponent is a gaffe prone screw up, and firming up their base with gay marriage evolution, etc. will be something for future campaigns to study.  If he pulls this off it will be an election to remember.

Great post, thanks.  Among the liberals  I know, the "irony deficiency" comment is so true.

I sent the link to the NYT Jones story to my college student daughter without comment.  She told me she canceled her online NYT subscription.

Biden will never be replaced - the line to get thrown under the bus by Obama is too long.

California enacted fairly restrictive term limits in 1990 (with some more restrictive tweaks on the 2012 ballot).  It doesn't seem to have improved California's highly dysfunctional legislature.
