Bio

Computer guy (currently remote sysadmin) whose career has bounced between computers (programming, system administration, database, user support) and driving (courier for almost 1,000,000 miles).

Theologically: conservative Christian.

Politically: born and raised in the Prohibition Party. Fell slightly "away from the faith" in '93, and was persuaded that libertarianism was the most moral approach (to my father's chagrin). Joined the Republican Party in '94 on the 48-year-old advice of Robert Heinlein. Love the Tea Party, and look forward to helping them kick Boehner out in 2012 if he returns to "business as usual" in January 2011.

John Marzan: Operation Counterweight. Lugar is a victim of Romney winning the GOP nomination. · 8 minutes ago

I think he's more a victim of the do-nothing (or worse, like his treatment of Ron Johnson) approach of Mitch McConnell. Tea Partiers are looking for people who aren't into "business as usual".

Calvin Dodge

I think Mitch McConnell's "business as usual/don't rock the boat" approach is having an effect here. People are frustrated with the failure to deal with impending financial crises, and that's helping Tea Party types (sorry, Peggy Noon, but Lugar's experience is mostly "how to get along with the opposition") in the primaries.

I look forward to being one of those insurgent voters, as I vote for Ted Cruz on May 29th

Not only was The Dale a fraud, but so was Ms. Dale, since "she" was actually a "he" in drag.

A perfect metaphor for the Boy King, I think.

NormD: Other absurdities of Intellectual Property

Patent a way of studying, a method of dog walking.

One patent was granted for a method of exercising a cat - by shining a laser pointer on the ground, enticing the cat to chase the light.

My attitude to SOPA/PIPA mirrors my attitude toward the Federal "drug war". If enforcement of a law requires outrageous actions, then it's time to end the law.

Calvin Dodge

Nobody's Perfect: Nonsense. Intellectual property is purely a creature of the law. Real estate is not. Furthermore, if I occupy your home, I deny you its use. If I sing your song, I do nothing of the sort.

And no, by singing my song, you don't deny me my use of it.  But if you perform it for a paying audience, you deny me my right to share in the proceeds.   · 18 hours ago

And your claim on that specific set of words and music denies my right to freedom of speech. Sorry, but IP is not REAL property, and the founders' approach reflects that - copyrights were intended to encourage people to produce easily copied works by letting them alone profit FOR A LIMITED TIME. They weren't intended to give the creators eternal control of those works.

James Delingpole:

Here in Britain we do love an heroic failure. This is one of the reasons - it's said - why we invariably lose to you Americans at sport. For us, it's the Corinthian spirit that matters most: we'd rather lose well than win badly. For you, losing is for losers.

"And all the world over each nation’s the same
They’ve simply no notion of playing the game
They argue with umpires, they cheer when they’ve won
And they practice before hand which spoils all the fun"

Brooks is being as intellectually honest as the people who said collective bargaining produced better educational systems, using the example of Wisconsin test results compared with Texas.

THAT claim was demolished by David Burge, who looked at the numbers per ethnic group (white, black, brown), and found that in the vast majority of NAEP tests (significant because they're taken by EVERYONE, not just a self-selected group as with the SATs), that Texas students did BETTER than their Wisconsin counterparts. (http://iowahawk.typepad.com/iowahawk/2011/03/longhorns-17-badgers-1.html)

So Brooks' stats are meaningless unless if he can give us a similar breakdown of the numbers, categorized by ethnic group.

James Lileks: Wind and solar are good because they are utterly passive, like a stoner watching a spider build its web. · Sep 12 at 4:53pm

And even THOSE are bad when actual powerplants (as opposed to generic cheerleading) are involved, like the cancelled solar power plant in California, and windmills off Nantucket.

Rob Long: There.  Energy crisis solved.  All we need to do are three things:

1. Drill.  Here, and up north.  And get that crude across the country, to the Gulf, by building the Keystone XL pipeline.

2. Build new nuke plants.  Like they have in France.

3. Start bombarding hydrogen pellets with laser beams.  I'm serious.  From the (UK) Daily Mail:

John Parris, of Europe's HiPER project, said 'This is save-the-world science. Fusion is the only serious answer to future energy demands - ·

"Only serious answer?"

So Parris is unfamiliar with the promise of thorium-based nuclear plants?  Where enough fuel is available for thousands of years of output?

Research fusion? Sure. But it's been "20 years away" for 50 years or more. Meanwhile, thorium CAN'T cause a meltdown, and it's so plentiful that it is currently a waste item, discarded after refining ores for OTHER metals.

So all you really need to do is:

1. Drill, baby, drill

2. Mass-produce thorium-based powerplants

You're not missing a thing, Mark, because you're quite right on the Supreme Court ruling.

No moral case. The political case is "we're old, we vote, and we'll vote you out if you won't steal for us".

Western Chauvinist: I wouldn't mind if Lucas re-shot all the dialogue scene of the first three (as in the most recent three) with real actors.  And real dialogue.

I wouldn't mind if the last 4 movies in the series got remade with a director who knew how to pick a better writer and knew how to direct actors.  For crying out loud!  Some of those were top notch actors he turned into anime characters! · Aug 31 at 10:49pm
