To clarify, by "national moral imperative" I mean only that we as Americans display a general civic morality in the sense that is it 'American' to help those in need or to band together as a community in a time of trouble.

It's not an argument.  It's a mnemonic device, a teaching tool.

His thesis is that there are 3 pillars or principles that define us, and if you ever forget what they are, you can pull a coin out of your pocket and read them:

  • Liberty
  • In God We Trust
  • E Pluribus Unum

I don't believe the words "E Pluribus Unum" appear in the Constitution, either, but they are central to the American idea, too.  Or at least they were before the multiculturalists took over and mucked everything up... · 0 minutes ago

I'm on board with Liberty and E Pluribus Unum, but I can't say that I'm convinced by "In God We Trust;"  It implies that if I don't respect a celestial dictatorship that somehow my American-ness is incomplete. · 15 minutes ago

The only implicit thing you need to respect is that "In God we Trust" has historically informed the ethos of what it means to hold an American identity, and this traditionally has (and still should) help inform a sense of national moral imperative.

Also...please don't be glib; "celestial dictatorship" c'mon now

John, I really like how you've approached this. Given the historical evidence, a conservative worldview is the one that has the highest credibility. But he issue seems to be that, time and again, the evidence presented for this doesn't seem to carry the weight it should in the ideological argument.

You can see it (aside from a constitutional argument) in the odd way we still have to defend free markets...or the strange idea that is still afloat that Keynesian policy works.

We've got all the evidence on our side...so why is there even an argument to be had?

I was always struck by how in the HP world it seemed as though the only job worth having was a government job...all other professions seemed 2nd class.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised considering the author is British...

Kay Ludlow: This is just what I needed to recover from a tough facebook fight over gun control. Thanks! · December 21, 2012 at 9:04pm

You know what? This is what helped me recover from exactly the same thing :-)

Glad I could help lighten the load.

BTW  Kay, just read your profile, I am also a CO native :-) where abouts were your stomping grounds? I was raised up in the Ft. Collins area

how'd I miss this one? guess I'll just have to come to the next CO meet-up :-)

The other film that I have to wonder at is "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum"

The fact that I can't get my wife to laugh at it with me might be telling...However I still rank this one as comedy genius :-)

 That's fantastic :-)

I don't suppose you've seen this lovely ode to Chick-fil-a:

As a fellow Coloradoan, I have a feeling that things might be swaying a little more "red" this time around as we all go to the ballot box.

Even though Colorado has been fairly lucky in the effects of the economic woes so many have been experiencing (only 7.5%ish unemployment at the moment) it seems as though there's a semtiment in our beautiful state (excepting of course the Socialist Republic of Boulder) that we can make a real change for the better by embracing more conservative economic values...

Diane Ellis, Ed.: Hm, you would think this would put their silly misconception that they represent the 99% to bed. It's a mathematical impossibility for just 1% of the population to reject a tax increase...

And that picture makes me cold just looking at it. · Nov 3 at 9:30am

Also....it's Colorado :-) the snow's already melted and it's picnic weather again

gnalneb

Excellent! I'm looking forward to seeing it.

BTW I thoughly enjoyed your last interview with Tim Groseclose, keep up the good work.

As a fellow IT Pro...I feel your pain, thanks for the hard work :-)

Perhaps I fall into the minority of religious Ricocheters,

Just for the sake of theological orthodoxy, Christ is not "Given power by God' Christ IS God...or more specifically the 2nd person in the Triune Godhead (Trinity)

"...Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!"

- Phillipians 2:6-8

I tend to fall on the side of there being an "Anti-Christ" spirit in the age rather than a person, the personification of "Anti-Christ" is not an unorthodox interperitation of that reference. I don't claim to know for certain, but it seems a valid interperitation.

Sweet Land is an outstanding film...no pretense, just the telling of a story.

I had the same reaction the first time I watch them laboring to get their harvest in by hand.

Although I think our generation may have learned something from the past, we still tend to brew our coffee too strong :-) (waste of beans and all that, hehe)

I would argue that it's generally a matter of probabilities and seriousness rather than an argument for or against the idea that a candidate might exist outside of the naturalizes citizenry in the United States who could end up winning an election.

The probability of a non-naturalized candidate having a primary allegiance outside of that to the United States would be much higher than that of a naturalized citizen.

Also, that the negative consequences of this other allegiance could be potentially much greater than the perceived benefit of opening the Presidency to all and sundry. All one need to do is look at the Euro-Socialist tendencies of the current POTUS (and please know I am assuming he is in fact naturalized, without that I have proof to the contrary).
