Paul A. Rahe: How about Casablanca, Strangers on a Train, The Lady Vanishes, To Have and Have Not, and, of course, The Godfather and Godfather II? · 3 hours ago

No Criterion editions of those yet! But of course excellent films.

I haven't seen that! I'll look it up.

I wish stopping funding would stop it all, but it would leave many aspects intact, unfortunately, resting dormant until a future Democratic administration could revive them.

@Grendel, I've corrected - he calls himself one but that must be a measure of sentiment not theology.

Twitter is also adding to the "spoiler" factor on major films. If you don't want to know what happens in the re-release of Titanic, for instance, stay far away.

A surprising number of women cited cigar smoke, steak, and fresh cut grass. LEARN from this, men!

Brian: #1 - fresh air, replete with higher oxygen content, brought onboard a submarine after weeks of recycling/producing internally.  Talk about synapses.

Then grass, onions and garlic in a saute pan, bread baking, an Arturo Fuente Hemingway Signature. · 5 minutes ago

Arturo Fuente FTW.

Zoon Politikon: I am self-employed and buy my own insurance plan for my family through my small business.  I've seen the premiums go up at least 9% per year over the last two years. It had been going up modestly before that but took a very big jump each of the last 2 summers when i renew. It got so bad I actually had to take what was already a "bargain" plan and finagle it to get the increases in a reasonable range.  · 16 minutes ago

As I noted in my last post, self-employed people are getting the worst of it. Note the comparison between you and the small group/large group markets.

A brilliant interview. Murray's recommended approach is not one I entirely agree with but he has certainly identified a problem, and a real one.

It's funny how Mike Gerson's advice to Romney to get women to like him is that Romney should be more like Mike Gerson.

Madcap: We get health insurance through my husband's employer, and his payroll deduction increased by $80/month. That's only 30% of the increase; his employer covers the rest, so we're at a $3,200/yr increase on our family plan, by my math. · 24 minutes ago

Yes, it's worth noting that Obama's "down by $2,500 by the end of my first term" promise was made when premiums were on average $2,200 cheaper.

That means he's got a $4,700 hole to recover to make that happen, by January!

Ben Domenech

This is fascinating and brilliant.

EJHill: The military expenditures example at the end of Reagan's era is misleading. After 8 years of the Gipper we were less worried about military threats and the Soviets were tottering. So the level was probably where it should have been - down. · 5 minutes ago

I agree completely with that.

Thank you for sharing this, Rob.

Anatomy of a Murder remains my favorite courtroom drama, and not just for the presence of the fetching Lee Remick: "As a lawyer, I've had to learn that people aren't just good or just bad. People are many things."
