Bio

US History, US Government, AP US History, US Foreign Policy teacher at a private high school in the midwest.  My time in the classroom was pre-dated by 20 years managing money for individuals and institutions.  This second career has been the great blessing of my life (other than my marriage and children!)  Bigtime politics junkie (dad was born and raised in DC).  Worked as volunteer in many Republican campaigns (started in Nixon's first sealing envelopes!)

This quote is across the top wall of the front of my classroom:

History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way we are.

-- David McCullough

Works for me...

This civil war isn't regional, like the last one.  It's ideological.  And I'm beginning to fret that this one is ALSO irreconcilable.

Pseudodionysius: Comedy Central is for clowns and he's the leader of the clown car parade.

It's called ComedyCentral. It is not a news network. If you think that Jon Stewart is a clown, then he is doing his job. · 1 hour ago

ALL my students watch him...underestimate his impact at your own electoral risk.

Until this nation cares more about a doctor flushing a baby down a toilet (and the baby's attempts to swim) than they do about Katy Perry singing with Mick Jagger, then we are screwed.

Everyone remembers what the full name of the Nazi party is, right?

National Socialist German Workers Party.   You were warned...

~Paules: I expect Hillary Clinton will be unavailable for further testimony, probably on medical grounds.  The truth will eventually come out, but don't expect any cooperation from the guilty parties.  They're going to stonewall this thing until something forces them out into the open.  So who do you suppose will get thrown under the bus first? · 4 minutes ago

WSJ thinks a House select committee should be formed. It's not a half bad idea until the MSM reports it as a witch hunt. · 1 hour ago

Depends on who else runs.  He's our "Lucy with the football" candidate to me.

Jeff: I, for one, welcome more Thomas Sowell episodes.

I was a raging liberal in my early 20's until I read Civil Rights: Rhetoric or Reality. I'm a Sowell fan. · April 26, 2013 at 8:50pm

Same book that made my wife conservative...just five short years ago...

I always love how Thomas Sowell talks about one of the greatest failings of liberalism is that they are never held accountable for their wrong-headed ideas.  It seems likely that this axiom will hold true in this case as well.

Gee, these "we should be able to travel to Cuba" types wouldn't happen to be the same people who wanted every investor in America to divest themselves from South Africa in the 1980's, would they?

Keith Preston

Cool.  My favorite historian.  Why isn't he nationally known outside of conservative circles?   Never mind, I know the answer to that question...

sigh.

Scarlet Pimpernel: Since we have a right to own guns, we have a general right not be have to tell the government whether we do.  It's a form of what the Court calls the "right to privacy." · 56 minutes ago

Nope.  Sorry.  You only have a right to privacy in certain areas...like sucking the brains out of a newborn or snipping the spinal cord after delivery.

sigh.

I went back to grad school in 1998 to get my masters.  They are mostly like this now.  My dept. head in those days was called Fred the Red...by the STUDENTS.  Even THEY thought he was over the top.  I can just imagine how bad it is now with Dear Leader at the helm.
