I went and upgraded on my laptop and everything worked as it should.  I also noticed that Firefox is now v9.0.1 instead of v9.0

Took the plunge and tried it again on the main desktop and everything is OK now.   Bad initial install or was it fixed in the minor version change by Mozilla - we will never know.

James, you may be heartened to hear (or maybe just shake your head and say "Oh no!) that : Sony Pictures has hired Dante Harper to adapt Foundation, the groundbreaking Isaac Asimov science fiction trilogy which Roland Emmerich is developing to direct.
