Beautifully stated - I have been thinking on this difference from time to time, and it is something that should be better understood by the general public. Clarifying initial assumptions should be done more often in debate.

Why not propose this for state/local government?

Why do we have to jump straight to federal action?

I thoughtRubber had the makings of a classic bad/bizzare movie, but I think the film maker got a little too pretentious with it.

Now if you are looking for sheer pain I recommend:

Super Mario Bros

The Room

Birdemic: Shock and Terror

James Lileks: Let me be perfectly clear, to quote Nixon and Obama: I'd be happy to foreswear all claims on SS if I could opt out NOW. This will not be allowed, because the statist policies of one party and the ideological incoherence of the other will not let me out.

Fortunately as a grad student (paid by va and nsf grants) I don't have to pay payroll tax (because we're not considered employees - which causes other terrible headaches) - so I am conditioned to ignore SS. I am going to plan  to never have to rely on SS. I actually am surprised that anyone would assume it will be there in X-number of years. My assumption is that the funds (or the willlingness/ability to pay for them) will be gone by the time I could retire.

David Williamson: Fossils, anyone? (I am not referring to our VP).

Oh, if you believe in the science of the speed of light, look up into the night sky and wonder how long have those stars been there? - why is our Earth so much younger? · 4 minutes ago

Our earth is younger than the stars. That it is does not imply that is 10,000 year old, or 10 million.

Watched Evil Dead 2 earlier tonight - there is a scene where the main character blows a hole in the front door with shot gun, oblivious to what is on the other side - just before this I likened him to Joe Biden -  make of what happened next what you will

I even saw code pink support Rand Paul on Twitter - I think - I'm not sure exactly how twitter works; maybe I misunderstood.

I absolutely enjoy threads that prompt vigorous disagreement. As much as I like seeing my point of view echoed (and believe me, after years in northern Virginia public schools, I love to see my point of view reflected elsewhere) I really like to see someone put up their viewpoint, and the ensuing discussion. I have seen it get heated, and I would hope yall can temper your passions, but I relish in the debate. I know I have not participated here, but please continue to expound.

Actually, I am a physics Ph.D. at William and Mary. Last spring (in reality I have no clue - fall? summer? recently .. . ) one of our faculty gave a seminar on YEC/extrapolation. It was . . . refreshing . . . I like having challenging viewpoints. Most of our our faulty and grad students are utterly opposed, but were surprisingly respectful (the debate was tendentious, yet better than I anticipated). Of course it quickly deteriorated into a do you believe in the Bible or not, which was less useful. And the defenders retreated swiftly to Biblical references, which did nothing for the mostly atheist crowd. However I was proud that this event occurred at my university.

It is utterly amazing to me that they would release a statement to the effect that they could issue a drone strike on american soil against a us citizen. I suspected that maybe they would have believed this, but that they would at least think to not say so publicly!

Yes.

I don't know what else to add.

No Caesar: This is incredible!  Rand is displaying that he has the best PR savvy in the national GOP.  He is forcing the media to put Obama in a bad light.  He is single-handedly helping to reinvigorate the GOP brand and doing the right thing (pun intended).

Yes! I am excited that a republican is doing something requiring some fortitude. I actually appreciate Durbin's involvement - of course his questions can be defeated, but I think it is impressive he showed up to ask them, rather than just ignore the filibuster.

M. T. S.

Honestly I'm impressed Durbin showed up to ask earnest questions.

Anyone else still enjoying this?

DocJay - Like the new photo - not necessarily a Bruins fan myself (I like these though), but I love me some NHL - wish it was more popular.

M. T. S.

Rubio's cracking me up, too!

I was going to go to bed early tonight, but now I feel like I need to watch - solidarity!

This is wonderful - this is the kind of thing I'd like to see more of from Republicans.

I'm sick of them playing the same game with this administration - it's time they did something out of the ordinary - something that requires some backbone, so we can see they still have one.
