Hey, did anybody else hear the rumor that JFK was fooling around behind Jackie's back - in the White House?!?

Despite some high profile contributions to education reform to the contrary from Gates, Zuckerberg and a few others, their push for special treatment for high tech students and immigrants serves to damage America and Americans. Why bother doing the hard work to reform American education, a lifelong pursuit which will earn you the enmity of powerful interests, when instead you can select your workforce from the cream of the globe? Sure, the American middle-class will lose ground and social mobility among 3rd and 4th generation citizens will decline - but think of the profits and the innovation! Sure, workforce participation will slide and civic culture, always built around the church and the workplace, will collapse - but imagine the software! It's kind of like the Democrats: if you have a political program that doesn't appeal to the majority of Americans - IMPORT NEW AMERICANS. What could possibly go wrong with that?

Freesmith

Let me know when Democrats criticize Democrats. They leave that to us. We should do likewise. Congratulations, Congressman Sanford.

But it has to go both ways.  As things stand today, the very class of people who most support illegal immigration (the educated middle to upper middle class) refuse to face immigration themselves.  If we can't achieved a balanced immigration policy of skilled and unskilled workers, we shouldn't allow any immigrants at all; immigration shouldn't be used to crush the wages of lower-status native workers.

If the people who are pushing for the new immigration law get their way, Joseph Eagar, you'll get what you want - a balanced approach to skilled and unskilled workers.

The wages of both will be crushed.

America has no shortage of skilled workers, information or otherwise. If a shortage did exist wages for skilled workers would be going up - and they aren't.

What we have is a shortage of lower-paid skilled workers, and that's what the Mark Zuckerberg's of the world want.

American business is not interested in retraining laid-off government workers or sales professionals; it is interested in selecting from the cream of the world's young labor, at bargain prices.

Let me know when you decide this isn't good for America.

According to the CDC there were 11.9 million legal abortions in the US from 1973 to 1984. Had they survived the median age of that cohort would be 35 years old - prime working years.

Authorities tell us there are approximately 12 million illegal aliens in the US today.

11.9 million - 12 million.

And yes, birth rates have fallen, especially for white women, as Last points out. But ask yourself - why shouldn't it, when you are importing a servant class into the country ( as well as maintaining a tax policy and social policy that encourages women to work outside of the home)?

Haven't you noticed that workforce participation is declining, even though there seems to be plenty of work for illegals to do? Perhaps American men have decided to let the servant class provide for their "disability" benefits the same way American women let immigrants bear the children?

Shut the door. You'll be surprised at all the good things that'll happen.

Answer my question, Freesmith.  Did your ancestors come here 500 years ago, or were they more recent immigrants?  If your ancestral line  arrived after, say, 1776, who in the H@!! gave you the authority to decide that now that your kin are here we slam the door?

Please look up the word "authority" and contrast it with the words "opinion," "conviction" and "point-of-view."

I am making an argument. I have no authority to enforce it. Take a chill pill.

However, I am a citizen of this country, and in a democratic republic such as ours, if my opinion becomes the majority of all other voters,' then my point-of-view can actually become official US immigration policy. The door can be slammed and America can drastically limit a human importation which is fundamentally changing the country. (A phrase you may be familiar with.)

At that point we can concentrate on the true task any culture has which sporadically accepts in new peoples - assimilating them.  (You can look up that word, too.)

At least that's how we used to do it.

Has anyone seen the video of the swat team going house to house making everyone inside come out with there hands up and getting searched for body bombs? That was a disturbing video.

I saw it, Herbert. Very scary.

Who did they think was hiding out in Watertown - Elian Gonzalez?

Denise's post and most of the comments above are just more evidence of the pathetic, linguini-spined, suicidally diffident passivity of The Worst Generation in History - my own.

So it was OK for Tamerlan to express anti-Americanism, was it? Heck, he was just talking like so many other folks in the Bay State.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but nobody invited Tamerlan and his brother to come to America. He and his brother asked to come and we allowed it - right?

Shouldn't anybody in Tamerlan's shoes have been grateful to be here? And if he wasn't, shouldn't any and every American with a smidgen of pride in his own country have asked Tamerlan why he wasn't thankful, and then told him that if he didn't like it here, the SOB was free to leave?

Or wouldn't that be nice?

Does it all go back to kindergarten?

A stranger seeks asylum in your home, then starts cursing you, and you say, "Oh, heavens! He sounds just like my know-it-all teenager!"

Please, please, please don't wonder how we lost the culture.

We gave it away.

"What might be worth thinking about, though, is the mentality that seems to be perfectly OK with essentially slandering, lying, mis-representing, and then does or says nothing to own up to their previously horrible statements."

To switch the subject slightly, here is part of an editorial in this week's The Weekly Standard on the lack of coverage of the Gosnell Atrocity Trial:

"We understand that the media aren't eager to cover stories that might undermine the(ir)  left-leaning political consensus..."

See? The Standard understands that the media are going to be immoral hypocrites and will debauch truth in favor of left-wing positions.

How very generous of them. Talk about fellow travelers! How about "running dogs of moral corruption"?

A man who was the chief advisor to the President of the US. A woman who is the "counter-terrorism expert" of government radio. A political operative and media personality who attended the most expensive private school in Philadelphia. A political operative and media personality who hosts a national prime-time cable show.

These people, who are members of America's political and media elite, hold the majority of this country's population in contempt. As Jonah Goldberg wrote in his "Goldberg File," what they said about the Boston bombing was like hearing that some woman was sleeping around in your neighborhood and then hoping that woman was your sister or your wife.

But do not confuse this with self-hatred. Flagellants demonstrate self-hatred; but Axelrod, Sirota, etc. are very easy on themselves. In fact, the second most powerful drive they have is that they should live comfortable and interesting lives.

What they are is self-alienated. Unlike any ruling elite before in history, America's despise their own society.

They are not Marxists, or socialists, or de-constructionists, or feminists. Those are simply their rationales, invented to disguise their true motivation:

They hate you.

Freesmith

Your point is only true if the premise that the Left swore fealty to Marxist ideas is true - which it isn't.

As the history of so-called thought of the so-called Left proves - its endless rationalizations, its contradictions, its transformations and its endless emotionalism - the only fealty the Left pledges is to hate you and what you believe, Pejman. Nothing more.

Joseph Eagar - Try thinking outside the box. Here's a challenge for you: Think of all the good things that might - just might - happen if America decided that after a 50 year period of a high rate of immigration what was needed now was a 40 year period of very low immigration and an increased emphasis of ASSIMILATION (the word that never is spoken in these debates). There is an historical precedent for it - the period from 1924 to 1965 that followed the Ellis Island years of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Apply your young mind to the challenge - what might be on your list?

Freesmith

Ah, so according to Duane Oyen increased immigration is necessary to compensate for the declining American birth rate, which is now below replacement level.

Our gallant right-wing social engineers have decided to do the work that American women refuse to do. What could possible go wrong with that?

Has it not occurred to anyone that if we drastically limit the artificial thing - importing a people - we may encourage the natural thing - begetting a people? Or is the congruence between the number of abortions and the number of immigrants in the US since 1973 just a random accident?

Duane Oyen - What is the matter with you, equating Stone Age aboriginals and hunter-gatherers with the citizens of the United States of America?

Did the American Indians have an essential part in establishing or maintaining the country you call home, or rather did they oppose that establishment?

And forget the space ship analogy, that favorite of the "Wrong but Wromantic" - If you build a house in the wilderness or in the city, you have the right to say who lives in it, not whoever wants to or would benefit from taking shelter there.

That's the way you actually live your life, isn't it, Duane, so start preaching what you practice.

Why, rather, are we permitting ANY immigration into the United States? Is there something wrong with the people who make up this country, those people known as Americans? If you think there is, please tell me what it is and how importing new people into America will fix it. Remember to identify yourself, however, as a right-wing social engineer.
