Dr Oscar Gawron in the Lab001

Dr. Oscar Gawron my dear father.  Here he is in all his glory.  In the lab at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh doing pure research in Biochemistry.  Later he became Graduate Dean.  This is really where he liked to be.

Irene Gawron my dear mother.  She had just graduated Hunter College here.  It would be summer 1944.  This was a vacation she took to Lake George before she met my father.

Dr. Epstein,

As usual your analysis is both fundamental and wide ranging.  However, one issue bothers me, storage.

If you are familiar with Moore's Law, that fundemental computing power doubles every 2 years, than you must realize that storage is a problem.  As the cost goes down and the speed goes up the temptation to store everything 'just in case' will be there.  If I am only getting the meta data but I can store what's inside the envelope, 'just in case', than some future less responsible bureaucrat can make a decision to massively invade the expectation of privacy.

Dr. Epstein this is not just science fiction paranoia.  Moore's Law was coined in 1965.  Since the late 70s it has not been exactly true in that computing power has doubled every 18 months rather than every 2 years.

The expectation of privacy needs to be clearly constitutionally recognized and defined.

Dr Steve: .....................This brings up a point that has been nagging at me: how the heck did Snowden get a clearance (or Manning, for that matter)?

............................We shared a respect for the mission that was palpable. NOT breaking the law, and NOT breaking faith with the American people brought the satisfaction of professionalism. The rank and file doing the day-to-day work were and I hope are still professionals.

Dr Steve,

Thank you for the short course.  Your grasp of the technical issue is profound and very enlightening for the rest of us.

However, one area that the rest of us do have equal expertise is the cultural rot that so engulfs this society.  The cultural rot is synonymous with the attitudes & policies of the current Administration.  The Snowdens and the Mannings are the final end product of this anti-culture culture.

At IRS it is the top that won't admit targeting the Tea Party.  The rank and file doing the day to day work in Cincinnati were set up to take the blame.  When they wouldn't swallow, up went the stonewall in DC.

Rot at the top and rot at the bottom.

Jim

Just saw your comment.  Still laughing at the thought of Biden as Papageno.  Bravo!

Mollie,

Do you mean that if I could write prose similar to the job description, you know without actually throwing up, they'd pay me what!!!??

Hmmm.. let me see with enough pepto bismol maybe I could...wait a minute what would constitute measurable outcomes...you mean I'd have to........hey wait a minute there isn't enough pepto bismol in Western Civilization for me to do that.

Mollie please don't tell me about the benefits, the perks, the HEALTH CARE! (I'm gonna be sick....................)

Jim

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.: Finally:

WHAT DOES A SUPERVISORY DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION SPECIALIST DO? ...The incumbent is responsible for .... to execute diversity and inclusion strategy and produce measureable outcomes...

Ok Ok Mollie I'll ask (groan),

To execute diversity and inclusion strategy and produce measurable outcomes...Such As???

James Gawron

Ok Ok Mollie I'll be the one to ask,

"What does a diversity and inclusion specialist do?"

There I asked.

Judith,

As a matter of faith I agree with Dr. Rahe.  As a matter of fact your article doesn't make me think much of this election.   This is a change in style rather than policy.  The new regime may sound a little less hard line but the net result could be no change at all.

Internally-psychologically expectations have been raised inside Iran.   From the sound of Rouhani these expectations could be crushed again.
Until the absolute control of the Mullahs is rescinded there will be no real freedom in Iran.

Jim

Did you see any.

Bozons => clown particles

I find it difficult enough to sort out the bogons and cluons! · 5 hours ago

So you haven't got a cluon!  Aha I thought so.  Recently, I was reading about the spork.  I had assumed it was a new quark discovered, maybe up maybe down maybe charm.  I was truly deflated to discover it was that funny plastic spoon like thing that has fork prongs on the end of it.

Just when I thought I had a Grand Unified Theory cooking.

Mark,

You must not forget the EPA.   Do to global cooling or warming or climate change we must never buy cars that Detroit can make.  If Detroit can make the cars then we invent a fantasy electric car that can't be produced at a price that anyone can afford and even if it could the battery manufacturing increases the carbon footprint more than the cars Detroit can produce so the global cooling or warming or climate change would be worse if it existed.  Got that.

Not since Stalin systematically destroyed Russian agriculture has there been an ideological assassination of an entire economic sector this effective.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!

I feel better now.

Jim

Flown,

Obama priorities.  Upsidedown and Backwards.  Wait a miniute, he's not just a 2 dimensional guy or even 3.  With 4 dimimensions you can be Upsidedown, Backwards and Insideout.

What an Administration!

George,

The two issues are absolutely connected.   Gov can't have free access to random metadata because they are incapable of using information to stop terrorists anyway!  Obama Administration split personality.

Rich,

When Lincoln first came to Springfield in his early 20s he was given the task by local businessmen to take a flat boat down the Mississippi to New Orleans filled with Springfield goods.  The custom was to sell the goods & the flatboat in New Orleans and then book passage back up the Mississippi on a paddle wheeler.

Lincoln got about 2/3 of the way down when river pirates snuck up on him in the middle of the night (also customary).  They cracked him over the head, stole all the goods and left him for dead.

He made it all the way back to Springfield, of course, empty handed.  But Springfield knew when somebody was 100% and ended up electing him to Congress anyway.  I'm sure when he was bucking to help build the Railroads he had those river pirates in mind.

Not exactly a community organizer.  Just infinitely better.

Tabula,

Mueller doesn't know.  He also doesn't know.  Did I mention that he doesn't know.  But remember, he doesn't know..........
