Bio

Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, I've worked almost exclusively in high-tech, most recently for 10 years at Intel Corporation. I did an assignment that lasted 5 years in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. It was a professional pursuit, of course, but more importantly, a cultural journey for me. I'm simply fascinated with Russia and the Soviet Union.. I am currently intensely studying the Soviet Union of the 1920's and 1930's. This was the time when everyone was wrestling with what Communism truly was. It is the best laboratory for exploring the intellectual path of an ideology that was heaving itself onto society in all corners of the world. This intellectual path is still relevant today, though in different form (but potentially just as dangerous).

In parallel, I have traveled to 34 countries in Europe, North America, and Asia. I've seen what works and what doesn't. I firmly believe that the United States is exceptional because of the values and strengths of our constitutional structure. We cannot let those values and strengths become diluted by ideologies that simply don't work. I'm a Ricochet member because I believe my cohorts here believe the same.

Lefties take notice:  the more you go on about gun control, the more people buy guns. You've probably contributed more to a growth in the "gun culture" than any righty could imagine.

NoWayerMan: It all goes back to the greens.

The Feds took over forest lands and ended logging rights. To compensate for lost revenues, they offered the money to help the state "transition to a new economy". The funding was supposed to be short term, but the state never found a new way to get the cash (became dependent) and the Feds renewed the grant repeatedly, until they didn't.

I guess you could say the environmentalists have been engaging in a war on women. · 14 hours ago

As an Oregonian, this is completely accurate. They torpedoed an industry for which they relied upon for 100 years and have nothing to show for it except higher taxes for the employed and a lot more forest fires.

Have been here since June 2010. One of these days, I'll actually contribute something useful!

I can remember very specific details of my childhood, but as an adult, my 20's and 30's were almost a blur. I think when you are a child, life is very regimented. Every year is significant, you can usually remember what grade you were in when something happened, or at least close to it, so you have better reference points.  Once school is over, everything blends together.

I will say that my memory is simply getting worse. Years ago, I could remember everything I did at work. Not so anymore. I have to write more down.

As for how it shapes you as a person, I've always been envious of people who can remember everything they've read. It seems that they have an advantage in life. I have to rely more on concepts and thus live my life that way. Those who remember things could possibly be much more data-driven. I don't have any facts to back that up, but it's always been my impression when comparing myself to others.

Me too!

I didn't do too bad, but I was a bit nervous on some of my choices. Did NOT get a 95% though!  As for #15, I think the Left would answer that as Democracy.

That thing you got there in the post, with the boxes and words, phew, that was complicated.

We have 320 million people in this country. Surely, we can muster up qualified candidates that do not have the last name Clinton or Bush.  We don't need political dynasties like so many of the countries our ancestors fled from.

When my Russian friend's son wanted both his mama and papa's attention, he would say, "Mapa!"  Very efficient, I think.

I have no obstacles, so I can give about as firm a commitment I can right now. One plus wife.

It wasn't a gun crime...

I love this line:

In terms of competition and cost control, Vermont has a rigorous rate-review process to look at insurance premiums to make sure they are reasonable given the factors established in state law.

I don't think they understand how competition is supposed to work.

Line given by me to my future wife, "So, instead of setting me up with your friend, can I get to know you instead?"

I still give her a hard time for trying to dodge me, but she's stuck with me now.

What time? I'm in Portland and cant miss work.

I'm inclined toward this point of view. As a native Oregonian, we got so blue so fast, us Conservatives are still in shock. Good luck to the rest of you. We're gonna be blue for a long time.

MichaelC19fan: The problem is I have seen lots of cases of formerly GOP bed rock areas going Blue or at a minimum Purple due to migration.

1: VT due to burnt out New Yorkers who moved after making their fortune on WallStreet

2: NH: Ex-Bostonians and New Yorkers

3: NoVa: When I was young and drove south on I-95 from NY to FL you felt you entered the South when you crosses the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Now NoVa is the same as being in any other part of the Northeast Corridor.

4: NV, OR, WA and CO: Ex-Californians

It seems those left behind in places like NY, CA etc get Bluer and Bluer. I do not know of any case where a Blue has gone Red due to migration.

Yes in the short term these Red areas are benefiting but over time the Blue Staters who moved there will take over. · 10 minutes ago
