Bio

Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, I've worked almost exclusively in high-tech, most recently for 10 years at Intel Corporation. I did an assignment that lasted 5 years in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. It was a professional pursuit, of course, but more importantly, a cultural journey for me. I'm simply fascinated with Russia and the Soviet Union.. I am currently intensely studying the Soviet Union of the 1920's and 1930's. This was the time when everyone was wrestling with what Communism truly was. It is the best laboratory for exploring the intellectual path of an ideology that was heaving itself onto society in all corners of the world. This intellectual path is still relevant today, though in different form (but potentially just as dangerous).

In parallel, I have traveled to 34 countries in Europe, North America, and Asia. I've seen what works and what doesn't. I firmly believe that the United States is exceptional because of the values and strengths of our constitutional structure. We cannot let those values and strengths become diluted by ideologies that simply don't work. I'm a Ricochet member because I believe my cohorts here believe the same.

Good lord, if that doesn't nail it, I don't know what would. After living in Russia and coming home to see people demanding all this stuff like their lives depended on it really makes me feel shameful. Desires are not rights. Get over it spoiled brats.

Brian Watt: In Alaska you are required to carry a rifle in most parks to protect yourself against bear attacks. Maybe surfers should practice surfing with shotguns.

The Skeet Surfing video is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. Please, everyone, check it out.

Shouldn't that be the Detroit Effect?

I recall a strip club in downtown Portland that used to advertise on their sign "20 beautiful girls and 4 ugly ones." Not sure how that worked out.

Having Peter Robinson and Adam Carolla in the same conversation intrigues me mightily. How many times would Adam make Peter blush?

Oh, that's a beauty...

Misthiocracy

Is that better or worse than being stuck playing auxiliary percussion, which is a mix of abject boredom and futile absurdity. You sit silent for most of the songs, except for those pieces where you get to hit your triangle a couple of times, or are required to play a few notes on the glockenspiel.

"I joined this outfit so I could play the drums! What's this glockenspiel crap?! Nobody said I'd have to learn how to readmusic! If I wanna learn about Melody and Harmony I'd just go to a sleazy hotel lounge and buy them each a drink!"

To be fair, whacking away at the kettle drums waskinda fun, but precious few pieces called for them. Usually I just sat at the back of the stage throwing scrunched up balls of paper into the tuba. · 5 hours ago

Did you see the Cheers episode where the symbol player came into the bar to drink between rests?  Hilarious.

Well written Michael, but utterly ghastly.

You know where this is going, don't you? The blame game will start (it already has) that the big rich corporations are shoving bad food down our throats and that farm subsidies are giving incentives to companies to grow corn which is often included in the "bad" category for carbohydrates. Just because most conservatives don't want anything subsidized doesn't mean we can win the debate. The evil corporations will take the beating, not the government.

Sometimes I don't think Ms. Noonan has ever left Manhattan. I used to like her, but she's become too lyrical for me. I also don't see the point in supporting Senators who have been in office since 1976 of any stripe. They don't live in their home state anymore (mine lives in NYC, btw), and they're completely disconnected with what needs to be done moving forward. I just heard an interview of his opponent, and though one interview does not a person make, he seems plenty grown up to me.

Many Oregonians like to cite that their families came over in covered wagons. My family wasn't one of those, but I think it's pretty cool.

As for descendants, I recorded my grandfather's life story and then typed it out. It's thirty pages of the classic American story. Living an impoverished life in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, his father fleeing debtor's prison, and coming to New York through Ellis Island in 1914 is a lot to be proud of.

The Great Adventure!: Another long time example from the Pacific NW.  "Oh, you can't kill the seals and sea lions - they're endangered!"

So back in the 70's they outlawed killing these animals.  About 15 years ago, their numbers had grown to the point where they'd hang out at the foot of the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia river and chow down on the salmon migrating up river to spawn.

Suddenly, the salmon are endangered!  Whatever shall we do?  Let's tear down the dams - they're hindering the salmon from making it up to their spawning grounds.  And just how many dams had been built in the previous 20 years - back when the salmon were running at record numbers?  Well, none.  But that's beside the point!

Maybe kill off some of the animals hanging at the foot of the dam?  Heaven forbid!  They've actually gotten approval to take one or two of them, but the hue and cry whenever it happens is deafening. · 1 hour ago

Yup, pretty much got it right.  Gotta love our state...

"The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"

"I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience." -during a 1984 presidential debate with Walter Mondale

Absolutely fantastic.

Michael Labeit: I share Hitchens' view on miracles, which is to say Hume's view. In his Fora.tv debate with Al Sharpton, Hitchens said the following with regard to miracles:

Well, I happen to be partial to miracles, but you've really hit me square between the eyes on this comment. An Al Sharpton/Christopher Hitchens debate? I can't even watch, but if Hitchens didn't make mincemeat out of Sharpton, then surely THAT is a miracle, right?

I'm definitely all for reversing this particular trend...

It was always my understanding that going to college in a different state did not give you residency. I went to college in California and did an absentee ballot for my home state of Oregon. I don't know if rules have changed since the 80's, but at the same time, I don't consider signing up for an absentee ballot as cruel and unusual punishment. These people discussed in the article aren't exactly isolated and far away from home. They're all crammed in a small area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Get on a train and vote at home for god's sake or do an absentee ballot. I suppose it is now a violation of human rights whenever something isn't immediately convenient.
