Throws:R

Above-average curve ball

I graduated college in 2005 with a degree in Business-Economics and now I am a seminary student, writer, podcast host and blogger for American Enterprise Institute and their Values & Capitalism project. I'm also a consultant for Dennis Prager and contribute to Acculturated.com and PJMedia.com.

I just moved to Los Angeles in Spring of 2012 from the Peoples Republic of Chicago and get my kicks by reading G.K. Chesterton, chasing waterfalls, and pursuing my abusive 20-year relationship with the Chicago Cubs.

You can find me on most readily available on Twitter @rjmoeller, or wherever deep dish pizza is sold.

Eeyore: Question for The Logo:  Do you know it they will webcast or record this for viewing somewhere on the Intertubes? · March 1, 2013 at 6:07pm

Yes, we will be definitely releasing the audio from it. Possibly video as well.

What if we just called him "Gentile"? :)

Continuing in Chapter 3 we see this reoccurring theme of how poorly the characters treat each other:

"On the morrow she said not a word to me about gambling. In fact, she purposely avoided me, although her old manner to me had not changed: the same serene coolness was hers on meeting me -- a coolness that was mingled even with a spice of contempt and dislike. In short, she was at no pains to conceal her aversion to me."

I think Dostoevsky is really trying to hammer away at how people become relationally confused when they are addicted to something...when wealth/status is their driving force. I don't think Polina actually hates the narrator Alexei. But he's ridden with guilt and consequently reads every reaction as a perceived slight.

Cornelius Julius Sebastian: Definitely interested, will order book, but not sure I understand where we find the (weekly?) reading assignment or "show up" to discuss. · 1 hour ago

Yeah, again, is there a deadline here? A date when we're all supposed to come back and have a class discussion? That'd be interesting, but... details, please. Some of us are already reading something else, and we'd like to plan this stuff. · 2 hours ago

Hey all, I'm about to post something on the Member Feed this afternoon that will clear up the confusion. Check this out in the meantime: http://ricochet.com/member-feed/The-Gambler-Day-One-Chapter-One

Gouverneur Morris: R.J.'s books to read in 2013 list pushed me to dust off my copy of C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy. I read Out of the Silent Planet in a single sitting on Christmas Eve Day. Tell me, Mr. Moeller, does Perelandra get even better? · 17 hours ago

That's awesome! And yes, Perelandra is even better. One of the most spiritually creative narratives you'll ever read.

Olive: Hi R.J.,

I readThe Brothers Karamazovseveral years ago. What translation do you recommend for a re-read?

Thanks · 7 hours ago

This is the copy/translation I've read through a few times and enjoyed using: http://www.amazon.com/Gambler-Dover-Thrift-Editions/dp/0486290816

Please do so! The more the merrier!

tabula rasa: I'm in.  I love Dostoevsky, but haven't readThe Gambler.

Will the reading be followed by a conversation here? [If not, where?] · 1 hour ago

Edited 1 hour ago

Yes, you can join in the conversation taking place on Twitter at the #TheGambler hash-tag...but I will also be posting a separate post here on Ricochet for communication about the chapters we cover each day.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is ONLY Chapter 1.

Cutlass-

Really appreciate your feedback! And yes, Walking Dead is one of my favorite shows and will be discussed on a future episode.

Kevin P: increase the sound quality on Andrew's mic. It was bad.

but i like the content of the show. · 8 hours ago

Definitely working on that. It wasn't Andrew's fault, it was on my end. But better days ahead!

Mister D: I'm 2 episodes behind. Will this have spoilers for recent episodes? · 1 hour ago

Nope, we just talk about the overall arc of the show/characters and themes.

Cornelius Julius Sebastian: If any one man's thought can save this nation, it is Dr. Thomas Sowell.  Man, you are going to make me breakdown and get on Twitter aren't you! · 13 minutes ago

Do it! :)

“The problem isn't that Johnny can't read. The problem isn't even that Johnny can't think. The problem is that Johnny doesn't know what thinking is; he confuses it with feeling.”

I just like reading something where I'm being cited in any way, shape or form by James Lileks!

OSweet: Nietzsche said that the sacred is whatever it is in a culture at which one cannot laugh. To the Left, the struggle they wage for justice of whatever type (social/economic/environmental), however misguided and counterproductive, is the sacred. · 42 minutes ago

So then what, in your opinion, are the things that the Right hold sacred? Faith? Family?

R.J. Moeller
Arahant: Quite true.  Conservatives understand human nature rather than getting upset by it.  Liberals are bullies.  It's alright for them to make fun of the other guy, but don't you dare make fun of liberals. · 1 hour ago

Mark Steyn once said that since comedy is taking reality and tweaking it, most liberals - by definition - cannot be true comedians because they refuse to accept and tweak all of the realities that exist. What do you think of that statement? I'm inclined to agree.

R.J. Moeller
Blackford Oakes: Nice "get", RJ.  I'm a fan of Steyn and I really enjoyed your podcast with Fr. Robert Sirico earlier this summer.  Definitely going to give this a listen. · 59 minutes ago

Thanks! Let me know what you think!
