This, to me, is at odds with the principles of libertarianism. It is impossible for the government to know everyone's driving ability and the capabilities of their car better than they themselves know. They impose an arbitrarily low speed limit in the name of promoting safety, but of course the costs of these laws are always hidden. One way to reveal them is the following thought experiment: A nationwide 10 mph speed limit would surely reduce the number of automotive fatalities to near zero. Would this be desirable?

I positively detest speed limits. Perhaps this is because I'm from New Jersey, where the speed limits are so ludicrously low that no one respects them and the police never enforce them. (Some sections of the Jersey Turnpike are 40 mph, the average motorist in the left lane is doing 80+, I regularly hit 90 and have never, ever been pulled over for speeding.)

But woe unto you if you take this very sensible approach to driving down to the great state of Virginia, where anything over 80 mph ANYWHERE in the state (yes, even in a 70 mph zone) is considered "reckless driving!" This is misdemeanor on the same level as a DUI -- if convicted, your details go into the national criminal database and everything. Ask me how I know!
