You're right Valiuth on the leash. I expect Cat 2.0 to be cordless and blue tooth enabled for wireless control. If not, the dude's just not trying hard enough.

So, you have a large group of active parishioners, bringing life and money into the parish. That's all well and good but we have lost our way of putting unity into the community.

Anecdotally, both English and Spanish communities have, in some cases, stated a wanting to come together. To help with this, parishes will offer  bi-lingual Masses but they just don't work in any long term sense.

I believe the right thing to do is to offer a Latin Mass where everybody comes together and struggles together. In this, the communities will start to form bonds of trust that will lead to a more cohesive Church, locality and country. Within this, the Catholic Spanish community can learn more about conservative principles rather than from the secular left that has successfully gathered them under their wing.

It's no guarantee, but what's happening now isn't working.

Your quote, "Catholic churches manned by radical left-wing priests", has the wrong qualifier. Instead of "radical left wing priests", I think you can simply state the US Catholic Church. The fact is, the Church does have a vibrant Spanish language community, both here legally (easily 2nd and 3rd generations) and illegally. They bring a wonderful faith and tradition. In most parishes (in California anyhow and I'm guessing throughout the country) you can find a Spanish Mass being offered, with some parishes having multiple offerings on Sundays.

I believe this is a legacy from a misinterpretation of Vatican II. But the result is, each parish has 2 communities (English and Spanish).

Over time, the Spanish communities have become very vibrant and, in some cases, more so than the English speaking community. I think the priests, in an effort to better serve, have accommodated in ways you wouldn't see in any other country.

In addition, is the money that comes from the Spanish community. This is real to every parish because they have expenses just like everybody else. They are all self-reliant, meaning no money comes from Rome to help purchase and install a new sound system.

I think O knows global warming, now climate change, is garbage. The left just uses it to push through legislation to control behaviors.

It will take a generation of libs to let this go. They're too much invested in it to date. They've been working on this since the mid 70's when they said we were entering into the next great ice age. Ooops.

He'll never leave the Senate to become president. Not with his Arafatism of saying one thing in English and something else in Spanish. Another trust bites the dust. See ya.

Cato Rand f/k/a GFL: It's a rather lengthy study.  Do you know if it addresses the question of the comparative rates of abuse between priests and men in general?  And if so where?  I believe the Americancatholic article said that this study found that about 4% of priests in the relevant time period were abusers (or at least accused abusers) but it didn't provide a comparable figure for the population of men in general.  I would have thought the 4% figure, again, was pretty high and quite probably consistent with my hypothesis.  But I haven't seen a general population figure to compare it to so, again, that's sort of a guess based on the fact that I just can't believe 1 in 25 men molests children. · 0 minutes ago

You should read the executive summary (pages 2-6 of the study, not of the pdf) and then go to page 13 as Joseph noted above.

I think you'll find some answers.

One answer to a question nobody has asked: Don't move to Alaska.

That study is here.

On page 13 they report the average nationwide rate of child sexual abuse in 1992 was 246 children per 100,000.

That seems much more plausible to me than 9.6%. · 0 minutes ago

Thanks for the find. I clicked on one link to the USCCB website and the doc "couldn't be found". I assumed they took it down. I'll take a look in a bit.

Same thing.  Those aren't studies.  The Daily Beast?  Americancatholic.org?  On its best day that's journalism, not research.

I don't honestly know the answer to the question -- do priests molest more than other men?  I hypothesized that they might, for the reasons I stated this morning that started us on this path, but I don't know for sure.  And given the nature of the inquiry, I don't imagine it's  a particularly easy question to answer very definitively.  That's always true when you're studying behavior that, by its nature, people tend to hide.

Both commentaries are based on a study conducted by John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

I'm still interested in real data on the subject, but that hit piece of cherry picked facts and misstatements lacks credibility on its face.

That is an important and alarming fact:

Number of abusive educators: 225
Number reported by school officials to police:0

Can you spot the deceptive slight of hand? · 41 minutes ago

So what are you saying?

"Experts disagree on the rate of sexual abuse among the general American male population, but Allen says a conservative estimate is one in 10. Margaret Leland Smith, a researcher at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, says her review of the numbers indicates it’s closer toone in 5 …

2004 U.S. Department of Education report reported that "the most accurate data available" reveals that "nearly 9.6 percent of [public school] students are targets of educator sexual misconduct sometime during their school career."

Wow.  Can those numbers be accurate?  I find that hard to fathom.

How are they defining "sexual abuse" and "sexual misconduct" here, would relatively minor things like inappropriate comments and off-color jokes qualify? · 0 minutes ago

You should click on that 2004 US Dept Of Ed. report link.

Comments and jokes are part of it. I'm guessing in some cases they lead to an escalation of sorts.

9.6% is high, yet you hear nothing of it. Could it be they get political cover because of teacher unions?

If the second exacerbated the first, you'd expect, then, for priests to abuse at greater rate than male public school teachers, rather than the reverse, no? That data seems to suggest that either teachers have their own unique factor or celibacy helps.

If my hypothesis is correct then yes, I would expect priests to abuse at a greater rate than male public school teachers.

Your second sentence is unclear/ambiguous.  Are you asserting that there is good evidence that male public school teachers abuse at the same or a greater rate?  I'm not denying it, just never looked into whether there was work on the subject.

And out of curiosity, if you are saying that male public school teachers are the same or worse, I'd be interested to know which it is: the same, or worse? · 1 hour ago

I have terrible train internet at the moment, but I believe googling should confirm that they offend at greater rates. · 0 minutes ago

Something you 2 might be interested in regarding abuse rates, real and perceived.

Starve the Beast: It's the next big political fight on the right:

The establishment wants the glory of passing new amnesty. The base wants to secure the border and enforce the laws that are already on the books, the laws that were passed by previous generations of glory-seeking politicians but that have never actually been enforced.

The establishment insists that we need the young workers to do the jobs Americans won't do. The base wonders how this can be with record numbers of people collecting food stamps.

The establishment insists that if we get out in front of amnesty, all those new immigrants will vote Republican. The base wonders what the establishment is smoking.

Here's what's reallydepressing: the Dems see conservatism as a deadly enemy to be defeated. The Republican establishment sees conservatism as a... um, deadly enemy... to be... well, er... defeated. · 22 minutes ago

Note to the Republicans:

I will never vote for Jeb Bush. Under any circumstances. We are not a pseudo-monarchy. No more Bushes. On this Barbara Bush had it correct.

And with the revelations over the past 2 weeks, I will no longer consider Christie as a last resort or any other establishment Republicans.

I am done with the all things Rhino. No more money, no more votes, no more anything. A sea change is coming. You will not be part of it.

That is all.
