He was the Archbishop of Denver when our family lived there.  He was unapologetically conservative and very vocal about abortion.  I wrote him once, to thank him for his forthright stand on abortion and to express my appreciation and solidarity, though I was a fundamental evangelical and he a Catholic.  He wrote back the most gracious response thanking me for my support and signed with a real signature - not stamped.  I was impressed.

Thank you for a wonderful tribute to an apparently wonderful grandmother.  You brought tears to my eyes.

#4 - Incompetence came first, then an attempt to cover up the incompetence.  He's very good at ordering around the hoi polloi (read: those clinging to their guns and Bibles), but still isn't good at making decisions on the world stage.  After all, the only experience he's had was as a community organizer and lawyer.  You  can organize 'til the cows come home and still not make one decision.  Ditto for being a lawyer:  you make the case, the judge makes the decision.

"You May Find Yourself" by the Talking Heads -  my absolute favorite, but I like most all their stuff.

Although "White and Nerdy" by Weird Al isn't bad.

Well said!

While the deep pockets in the Middle East and elsewhere might make campaign contributions for the national election (where the AG can look the other way), they aren't going to back the "small fry" back home...  So the Dems in Minnesota, Michigan, California, etc., need their constituents for votes AND to put money in the coffers.

Does anyone remember Marshall McLuhan?  I keep thinking of his book, "The Medium is the Massage."

Very thankful for the internet, blogosphere, Fox News (they covered it late, but at least they covered it) and Facebook - new media.  Otherwise, it's kinda like being in a Communist country.... we only hear what the elite want us to hear.

I once worked with a woman who had two children - a son and a daughter.  Their daughter's name was Nadia and their son's name was - you guessed it - Aidan.  I thought it was wonderful and wished I'd been clever enough to pick those names for our children.

I've been reading RACE AND CULTURE by Thomas Sewell and came across this sentence, "A society can be made ungovernable by the impossibility of satisfying those with a passionate sense of entitlement - and without the skills or diligence to create the national wealth from which to redeem these expectations."  It sent shivers through me because... here we are.

C. U. Douglas: .. I still would rather take the hit in penalties and taxes rather than suffer a government theft of my hard-earned retirement.

Just sayin'. · 7 minutes ago

Ditto.

I was stunned by the first sentence.  I can't get any farther.  A journalist can't tell the difference between a cross and a crucifix?  and this is a person who sways public opinion?  Pitiful...

Mr. Bildo: I have considered going Galt recently. If things continue to go the way they do, that may be my ultimate fate. However...

"the cult of Beck meets Epcot Center."  Wonderful!  heh heh heh...

Your posts are always so succinct!

The GOP leadership are not leading... big problem.  We keep shuffling Congressmen and they keep blowing us off.  I have a new nickname for John Boehner:  "BendOver."

Mr. Quil, hunter of bear and deer, fisherman, of stout German heritage and ISTG (for you Myers Briggs types) cried when we saw Les Miserables over Christmas  and when we catch It's A Wonderful Life on the t.v.

Happens much more frequently than it did thirty years ago when we married, so I, too, believe that hormone levels may play a part.
