"He's tanned, rested, and ready. Nixon '92."

Like it could've been any worse than the circus we had with Bubba & Big Ears...

Jennykins: As a proud Hoosier whose youngest child currently attends Purdue University, I can attest to the fact that the public square's loss is definitely Purdue's gain.  Mitch Daniels has already sent parents and students a letter stating that Purdue will freeze tuition and fees for the next two years, and he's challenged EVERY department, dean, professor, and faculty member to actively look for ways in which to save 1-2% in spending. He's also cutting out merit raises for the next two years for any faculty member making more than $50,000 a year.

First, thanks for sending your kid to Purdue - my paycheck appreciates it. ;)

Second, the part of your post that I've bolded is incorrect. The merit raise freeze is for "senior administrators, deans, and administrative and professional staff" making > $50K/yr. Mitch is all about admin bloat thus far...

Mitch has been very clear about making nice with the faculty at WL, and that he's not looking to save $$$ at their (and thus, the students') expense. Considering how much grant money some/many of the faculty bring in, it's not all that bad a strategy.

Fricosis Guy: I saw your tweet, then couldn't stop reading the piece on my mobile at nearly midnight.

Yup, me too.

Great piece of writing & a surprisingly fascinating topic - lots of layers & good food/object lessons for thought...

Engaged in some DVR-enabled time shifting. Can't say I remember exactly what we watched, but I can say that we enjoyed it more than anything POTUS/SOTU related...

Future Historiography will bear out that the Academy went off the beam, and did it quickly, drawn (pushed?) by the politicized siren song of Social History's fetid offspring.

BrentB67: Liberals hear: The deficit is exploding, we have to get it under control it takes 500,000+ years to count to $16Trillion, the only way to solve the problem is a flat tax with a rate of around 75%.

I doubt it -- the flat tax is anathema to liberals; 'progressive' taxation is a cornerstone of their economic belief system.

I think what they hear is this: 'This rich 1% doctor is a hypocrite "Christian" quoting God to advocate a flat tax because it would benefit him. What is there in his resume we can exploit to take him down before anyone hears what he's saying?' · 18 hours ago

Obama couldn't help but react when Carson stated that taxation wasn't supposed to hurt the guy who just dumped $1 billion into the pot. That flinch surely indicated that he (and so many on the left) believes that taxation is meant to be punitive & hurtful to those who don't toe the ideological line...

Priceless!

Gospel freedom vs. Law freedom

All very fascinating in its insidiousness, showing how common words yield differing languages & meanings...

jrad22: Sorry economic freedom is far more important. We need to win the argument against Keynes.

I'm curious. Why? · 1 hour ago

Agreed; please explain.

It strikes me that economic freedom is going to be a tough row to hoe without being able to build it on a societal base of marriage & family.
