OK, here's a piece of advice that's ACTUALLY USEFUL. Netflix does stream a LOT of great movies....but only for a limited time. Streaming movies come and go. Fortunately, there's a web page that tells you what streaming movies are due, and when they're going to be retired. To plan your viewing, visit here: http://instantwatcher.com/ · 4 hours ago
Netflix recently accounced they were deactivating information on how long it would be until a program was retired, so that site won't be useful much longer.
Recommendations: Sherlock is BRILLIANT, A Bit of Fry and Laurie is great British zaniness, Safety Not Guaranteed is a wonderful little sci-fi indie comedy, Primer will make your brain explode, Battlestar Galactica is greatness far beyond its cheesy origins.
LOVED Portal 2 - probably the best use of Stephen Merchant in any media property - and really dug Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. But presently, I've been tied up more with designer board games than video games. Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, and I just got a copy of 1960: the Making of the Presidency for my honeymoon.
Chris O.: I have some great friends on the other side of the aisle. We have some of the most fulfilling conversations and it all comes down to simply respecting the person and listening. You don't have to agree. They don't have to agree. Don't put that kind of pressure on a conversation.
I think I've made good progress on this front. Her dad is an old-school, dyed-in-the-wool 60's lib, and her brother and sister-in-law are cut from the same cloth. I've tried to be as thoughtful and considerate in political discussions as I can, and I think they've seen that all conservatives are slack-jawed yokels or cigar-chomping plutocrats.
Eeyore: Iam wondering about one logical thread: Conservatives are conducting a War on Women-> You are a Conservative -> She is a Woman. That logic course I took in college would seem to allow an inference thatYou are part of a War onHer.
Has she addressed that inference with you? · 35 minutes ago
Sadly, it has come up, at least in the accusation that by supporting Romney I am supporting keeping women barefoot, pregnant, and cooking. There's a lot of traffic in generalizations and stereotypes in our household.
Wow, I had no idea this would set off such a firestorm of comments and turn into my first Main Feed post.
To all of you with concerns as to whether I'm clear-eyed about things or whether I've really thought this through, honestly, thank you for your concerns. It's not something I'm entering into lightly... she and I are both taking marriage incredibly seriously, and we have great communication despite this one area. I have no idea if she'll become more conservative, and while I will try to teach her as much as I can about conservativism, if she votes D until we pass from this earth, I will love her no less.
That said, I've gotten great ideas from this thread, and I'll figure something out for the night when her heart is broken... by President Romney, but not by me.
Mama Toad: My "mixed marriage" is disparity of faith. Much much easier to deal with than disparity of politics.
I have no advice for you except look to Carville/Matalin -- Papa Toad and I are amazed by their longevity.
On Election Night, you might allow her to select the TV channel while you watch on a computer with headphones? · 17 minutes ago
Mama Toad, isn't liberalism a politic of faith? Faith that what has never worked, somehow will?
In all seriousness, Matalin/Carville is pretty much my evidence that this sort of relationship can work. And if they split up, I'm doomed! Just kidding.
Second, this is why engagement is such an important part of the marriage journey -- it teaches you how to handle the big issues that will come up in marriage.
Now, if it weren't happening days before your wedding, I'd say you must watch together and learn to be respectful and all that.
But when you're getting to the point of hours before your wedding, people are stressed out. Can't you just work on something wedding related instead? Or go out to the bar with a buddy and stay separated?
This is your lifelong partner! Do you really want sore feelings heading into that big day? · 21 minutes ago
Thanks Mollie!
That was pretty much my thought, and the reason why we waited until AFTER the election for the big day. But I think that's the right approach: down the road, dialogue and communication about the big issues; for now, tacit acceptance that the other partner is WRONG. Heh.
My assumption was that it was part of the reason why he never bothered to get any votes on the other side of the aisle for Obamacare. His ego will not allow him to compromise his vision or acknowledge the other side has any validity.
I must be gentle to stay within the CoC, but the "Not the Noel Coward Song" that Eric Idle sings before the Mr. Creosote scene in Meaning of Life is the perfect combination of immaturity and rhyming.
Yudansha: I've said it before and I'll say it again: Never! No matter how much voters may dislike their incumbent, they just don't send walking punch-lines to the U.S. Senate. Just ask Christine O'Donnell & Sharon Angle.
Does Akin have a history of such gaffs? I honestly don't know. O'Donnell was done in by a mixture of herself and Delaware's pale-blue electorate (this is the state that's re-elected Biden for what seems like a century). My impression is that Angle lost because of Reid's union muscle in Vegas. · 1 hour ago
To my knowledge, no he doesn't. He was a boring House member from west St. Louis County (suburban and upscale) for a long time, and won a tight primary partially because McCaskill pushed for him. My guess is that McCaskill wanted to go against him because this is the kind of stuff he pulls behind closed doors, but I don't have evidence to support.
As a Missouri resident, there's a couple of things leading to Akin's non-fall from grace.
One, McCaskill is not liked by the majority of the state. She beat the great Jim Talent in 2006 by only 50,000 votes out of over 2 million, almost entirely due to the anti-Republican wave that year. Talent had won the seat in 2002 over Jean Carnahan, who was appointed after her husband Mel was elected posthumously in 2000 over John Ashcroft. It's a seat with a lot of turmoil, as opposed to the other seat which Roy Blunt took over for Kit Bond, who had it for eons. So a incumbent not winning reelection is not surprising.
Two, if Akin prevails it will be mainly because of a STRONG anti-Obama sentiment in the state. The RCP average today is Romney +5.2, and I would wager on Election Day it will be closer to +6. I live in the south county of St. Louis, Dick Gephardt's old district. There were Obama signs and bumper stickers everywhere in 2008. I see NONE this year.
