Stewart: "This has... shifted the burden of proof from the tin-foil behatted to the government".

No Jon, what has happened is that the "tin-foil behatted" have been shown to be CORRECT in their paranoia of government.

Might not be for everyone, but I'm very glad someone told me this one:

If your wife is upset or uncertain about something and she wants your advice she will ask for it.  She will ask in no uncertain terms.  She will say something along the lines of "I want your advice".  If she does not say that, she just wants you to listen.  Do not offer advice or opinions.  Do not speak other than to grunt or say "I see" occasionally, so that she knows (or thinks) that you are listening.  It might take a while, but when she is done venting, she will feel better.

Gulag Archipelago.  Ask me again in 2 months and I'll tell you the same.  Worth it though.

Israel P.: Steelers fan here, so the only important thing is that the Ratbirds lose.

I was not planning on watching as it's 1:30 AM here. But my sixteen year old son wants to watch it with his girlfriend, so I may need to stay up as chaperone. Unless my London-born wife nixes the whole thing, since it's a school night. · 13 hours ago

It is also important that the 49ers lose so they don't get that 6th ring and tie the Steelers.  To a Steelers fan this is like the Iran-Iraq war.  I didn't watch that either.

I predict that the lines at the grocery store will be very short at 8 pm EST, making it the best time of the year to perform the usually unbearable task of grocery shopping.  I plan to stock up.

Nobody mentioned Citzen Kane?  Too obvious?

Schmaltzy, I know, but the ending to The Natural still chokes me up.

The award for great ending relative to the rest of the movie has to go to The Graduate.  I thought I had wasted two hours of my life until that last scene on the bus.  Almost made it all worth it.

And ditto to those who mentioned Rocky and Gran Torino.

Not so much the filmmaker's doing, but The Greatest Story Ever Told had a pretty good ending.

Melanie Graham: Obama is a fad, not a president. I think the fad is over. · 0 minutes ago

I keep thinking of a 15-second commercial. Obama is speaking at the beginning and his voice begins to fade. Fading in is the voice of an operatic soprano singing Wagner or some such who gets louder and louder. On screen, it flashes "Obama is over" then "So over". Show it but once -- on Monday Night Football the day before the election. · 35 minutes ago

I think the thing that frustrated me most last night was that Ryan didn't challenge Biden when Biden said that Scalia would make abortion illegal.  He really could have made Joe look foolish(er) on that one, but he just let it go.  I just can't understand that.

This is very sad.  Dr. Fears was one of my favorite Teaching Company lecturers.  Matt, thank you for the news and for the touching tribute, although you have put a damper on an otherwise pleasant day.  I think I will begin re-listening to the Churchill lectures (highly recommended, fellow Ricocheters) tomrrow, for old times sake.

Iron City.  (Hey, the debate's not the only thing on TV tomorrow night).

I wonder who had to tell the President that he lost badly?  Who was the first person he went up to smiling and said "How did I do?"   I'm sure those of us on Ricochet would have had no problem responding, but assuming it was somebody who actually likes him, that had to be an uncomfortable moment.  I hope one day we get to find out how it went.

If this story is true and has legs, it could do as much damage to his campaign as Mr. Romney did.  Voters will be amazed at how out of touch with reality he can be.

RightinChicago: I think so.  It helps to explain why he doesn't like politics and all the negotiating, hand shaking, and schmoozing that go along with it.  It also may explain why he is so competitive against people.  I've read that he must win at basketball, golf, bowling, etc.  It's probably because he fears other men and goes out of his way to beat them to prove his "superiority". · 0 minutes ago

If he must win at bowling I hope he has improved since 2008.
