I've actually noticed this within engineering (warranted this is anecdotal evidence):

  • Had a summer internship for a large manufacturer, most of the engineers were either conservative/libertarian over liberal, probably 70% vs. 15%.
  • Interned for a government laboratory, breakdown of conservative/libertarian vs liberal was probably 30% vs. 50%
  • Have worked in construction for the last 5 years, the engineers tend to be conservative/libertarian to liberal by at least a 70% vs. 15% ratio.

I think it is human nature to automatically defend where ever you make your livelihood as necessary, hence a government employee will tend to be more liberal than their private industrial counterpart.

When I order a book from Amazon, vs. going to a "local" bookstore, I still have to pay for shipping, which on an internet sale is often more than the tax on a similar product (and Arizona has a high sales tax, 9%!).  So instead of spending $16.35 ($15 on a book with $1.35 of tax) from the local store I spend $13 ($8.99 on the same book with $3.99 for shipping for a book from the east coast) for an online purchase.  If mom and pop stores want to start competing with internet sales taxing them won't solve it, they need to realize that their competition pool has increased, and reduce their prices (or make their services better).

Majestyk: "KEYBOARD OF DOOM" - Love this!  I feel the same way about my keyboard when I see stupid comments on Facebook...   I figure if you are stupid enough to post something that dumb, then they NEED me to respond!

Matede: Why not find another florist? This is bullying of the worst kind. This is about forcing the acceptance of your lifestyle not the tolerance of it. · 1 hour ago

Matede: Unfortunately in today's world, the word "tolerance" has lost it's original meaning and now means "acceptance."

I don't think you are in the wrong at all.  I actually do pretty much what you do:  At this point my Facebook page is pretty much politic-free.  I don't post articles or anything else political at all.  But if one of my liberal friends posts something I vehemently disagree with (not too hard to find) then I feel zero regret in posting articles, comments, quotes, etc. to prove them wrong under their post (like you have done here).  It sounds like you have frustrated this friend of yours to the point that they are expecting your comments, and because they can't respond to you, they resort to name calling (i.e. "troll").  I can imagine at some point they will un-friend you, to make their "echo-chamber" a little larger.

Itamar's post from your image made me laugh .  Poor liberals, they don't even realize that they are the ones that are in a bubble!

Wondering the same thing.  I though Rob/Peter/James mentioned it in the most recent Ricochet Flagship Podcast...  And something about a live chat too?

The only thing is, that I don't think there is anything in the constitution, that would prohibit a President Romney from pulling a Donald Trump, and "firing" Joe and replacing him with Ryan (or whoever else he chooses).

I'm wondering if the 39% mark for Republicans is accurate; The highest previous mark was 37% so it seems possible that it could be an anomaly.  On the other hand, the Democrats had a high water mark in 2008 of about 40%, and with the anecdotal number of "Democrats for Romney" we see in commercials, this could indicate a true switch of parties.

The only other way to make sense of this variance is that discouraged Democrats become independents, while certain right leaning independents become Republicans...  That is ideology remained the same, only party affiliation switched.  I suppose we will get some, if not all, of these questions answered tomorrow.

jetstream: Excellent penmanship, a harbinger for Tuesday's victory.  Wednesday, he should write a post election comment, maybe something like "YEEEEEHAAAAAAAAW"! · 4 hours ago

Your profile says you are a pilot so I have to ask: How difficult is it to do write things like this via a plane?

Fortunately for both of us, I only needed to rotate the picture through my computer, and save all of us strained necks from trying to read upside down words on a screen.

I've noticed this difference quite often in my profession: Engineering.  Classical engineers (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical) are more often conservative (or libertarian) than liberal, and I believe in part it is because we were trained to think about solutions and results (as you mentioned).  We apply theoretical science to the actual world, and our designs are often constrained not only by scientific laws, but also money.  Scientists (who are more often liberal than conservative) tend to be missing this link between the scientific world they are discovering and the "real world" constraints they live in.  This phenomena of how liberals and conservatives think that you discuss has been proven to me over and over again.

I suppose if you think "jobs", J-O-B-S, is a three letter word, then you have no problem thinking "forward" is spelled F-O-W-A-R-D.  Perhaps it was intentional, and they decided to redistribute the other "R"...

Just noticed this:  How are you guys married but not following each other?  :P

Any chance you guys will make this a weekly podcast?

Trace Urdan: I think Rob should have to spend the day in West LA outside of his house, walking the dog, buying coffee, at the bookstore, at yoga class... wearing a Mitt Romney 2012 t-shirt. · 0 minutes ago

In addition we need proof of this.  So Rob would also have to post pictures of his day.  Even better would be to get random strangers (and/or friends) to take his picture...

Jim Geraghty, I hope the Romney campaign will listen to your advice in this podcast.
