Would any of you trust a lawyer who, in taking as important a step as Holder did in (supposedly) recusing himself from the AP investigation, didn't bother to document it in any way?  I am no attorney, but I suspect that like many here I have been in enough legal situations to know that you document stuff like this.  Wouldn't you create a document saying this is what I am doing, this is why I am doing it, here's the date, and here it is signed by a witness?

I have read a lot of things on this site that I find deeply offensive, but nothing more than the notion that John Lennon was more talented than Paul McCartney, who was the MOST talented Beatle.

Yes, that's one reason why my family physician will not prescribe contraception. He does not want to be implicated in the ending of a human life.  Some, not all, contraceptives operate by not allowing the fertilized egg, now a unique human person, to implant.  So taking that contraceptive is an act intended to end a human life.  Both the act and the intention are morally evil.

My humor is too subtle.  I was making a joke that Steve Kroft would like to marry Pres. Obama.

Jerry Carroll

Why limit it to polygamy? Why not go the Full Monty and embrace bestiality? That community's right to a civil union may be perceived in the nimbus of rights afforded in a generous reading of the Constitution. · 8 hours ago

This whole thread tells us that this is a golden age of television while movies are almost a waste of time.

Justified is the finest thing on television today.  If you haven't watched Deadwood, and can take a LOT of swearing, it is as fine a thing as has EVER been on television.  If you want to geek out, go with Dr. Who, starting in 2005 if you don't want to watch the previous 40 years.

This is greatly disappointing.  As with booking the moral reprobate Newt Gingrich a couple weeks ago, the Flagship seems to be getting political hacks instead of someone who might have something interesting to say about the times we live in.  Does anyone think Rick Perry will give us anything other than boilerplate?  This last week has been perhaps the most consequential week of the Obama presidency and Rick Perry will have nothing intelligent to say on the matter. Bring back Byron York!!!

JamesB: Carney is just a spokesman.  If he lies, he isn't lying, the person who told him what to say is lying.  I believe that would be President Obama. · 0 minutes ago

Yes, but then as the good nuns once sang, "How do you solve a problem like Obama?" He's a hard man to simply fire.

What a depressing thread.  The wild denunciations of a goodly percentage of our fellow citizens suggest a level of ideological rage that make a mockery of the "right tone" and "center-right" mantra of Ricochet.  If some belief system is held to be true by tens of millions of Americans, then there must be SOMETHING true that it is getting at.

Let me do something weird and actually answer the original question.  I agree with most of the left regarding the death penalty, although for slightly different reasons.  I agree with them on the size of the Defense Department. I agree that large corporations are a threat to liberty.  I believe that centralization of economic power is almost as much a threat as centralization of state power.   I believe in being a good steward of nature, not simply seeing her as a resource to exploit.  I think "Drill, baby, drill" is vulgar.  I think that setting aside land for conservation is a good idea.  I agree with some on the left that looking at education as merely economic in its benefits is a serious error.

On most of these I disagree with solutions, but here are some points of agreement.

Cattle King

I would highly recommend Wendell Berry's Christianity and the Survival of Creation for a take on the matter that is more friendly to conservation and less about why the Bible says it's ok to abuse God's creation.  I do not endorse all of Berry's arguments, but for the party of "Drill, baby, drill" this might be a useful corrective.

Maybe you can ask him which wife was the most fun to be unfaithful to.

Perhaps I was presumptuous.  What precisely did Broussard say that was obnoxious?  I take him to be giving a standard recitation of the well-accepted Christian teaching on sexuality.  Do you find that obnoxious?   Or is it something else? · 40 minutes ago

As an agnostic I'll leave it to others to determine what's "well-accepted Christian teaching on sexuality."  I've noticed divergent views among christians on the subject.  Suffice it to say that what I'm describing as "obnoxious" isn't anything I haven't heard before from others who consider the book of Leviticus to be divinely inspired truth. I'm happy to give you that I consider some views obnoxious that are commonly espoused by certain particularly conservative, literalist christians.  I'm just not willing to give you that those views are universal among christians. · 28 minutes ago

So, indeed, you find orthodox Christianity obnoxious.  You have the entirety of the popular culture on your side.

Cattle King

Speaking of obnoxious, I have been inspired to write an obnoxiously long post on the member feed on why I think the gay rights agenda poses a significant threat to religious liberty.  Although I agree with Mollie above, namely that American culture has its religion, its liberal pieties, and those pieties will get great protection from the law and culture.

Just so we are clear, GFL thinks Christians are obnoxious.  It is precisely that opinion that will get me fired, close my church, shut down our local Catholic hospital and shut down two Christian schools in my little town.  And it will all be done by those who claim to love freedom.

Not all christians are obnoxious.  I don't know what the ratio is, but most of the ones I know personally are not.  I'm pretty sure I've run across some here who aren't either.  But I missed where the golden rule was rewritten to say "[expletive] onto others as you'd never want others to [expletive] onto you."

I think you understood me correctly.  It's not that I think Jason Collins is brave.  Like many here, I suspect it was a considered career move for him.  It's that I find what Broussard said obnoxious, which is just not a characteristic that sits side by side with "brave" very well. · 1 hour ago
