For someone who loves religious freedom so much, you sure have put a lot of effort into sticking your finger in the eye of the one institution that will be responsible for saving religious freedom in the US for coming generations.

The coming generation of priests and bishops of the Catholic church are profoundly more orthodox than their predecessors.  I've spoken with many of them personally, whenever I'm not at the beach with my head in the sand.  The most orthodox groups of religious are growing and the most liberal sects are dying out.  "The spirit of Vatican 2" is passing by and more attention is being paid to the actual documents of Vatican 2.  The Latin Mass is coming back strong and people are yearning for authentic Catholic culture.

I don't know how someone can look at the progression from Bernardin to Cardinal George ... or at Paul Ryan, Clarence Thomas, Marco Rubio, Chief Justice Roberts, Bobby Jindal, John Boehner, Bill McGurn (wait...) and not see that we're going up, not down.

So let's get on with the fight, shall we?  The Catholic Church is your last hope for protecting religious liberty in the US.

I do not savor the irony.

That's exactly what your posts do.  You've provided a very pointed example of how big government ideas have been living in various sections of the Church for the last 40-50 years.  You've pointed at maybe 1% of Church hierarchy as big government supporters and a slew of "catholic" Democrats to support this air of "well, the Church had it coming after all, now the chickens are coming home to roost."  As if it Catholics are uniquely responsible for the big government sentiments of an entire generation of Americans...  I'm looking forward to your posts on liberal sects of the Jewish and Protestant faiths as well as the big government sentiments of many modern Muslims.

The main point is that currently the strongest supporters of constitutional limited government in the SCOTUS, House and Senate are mostly Catholic.  The most influential US Catholic bishops (Dolan, Chaput, Gomez and Cardinal George) are all fighting like mad for religious freedom as is the USCCB.

Maybe 4 more posts on the Catholic Democrats of the 1960's will clear my head.

If irony be our delight, perhaps we can take delight in the fact that if religious liberty is to be maintained in the US, it will be the Catholic Church that will protect it.

If the Church fails or is defeated in this battle then religious liberty will be forever compromised in our nation.

There's a fight going on here and if you be a person who values religious liberty, you had better get on the side of the Catholic Church.  Even though we all love irony because it proves how smart, hip, and cool we are, we had better get on the side of the Church.

Or maybe we could have a 54th post on just how many Catholics voted democrat since the 60's.  That would be totally boss, man.

It's a good thing Jews, Muslims and Evangelicals were so busy defending limited government since FDR or this country would really be up a creek wouldn't we.....

Peter Robinson: Oh, but this is beautiful--beautiful because compellingly-written, deeply-felt...and true.

Really?  You really think this was a beautiful bit of prose, Peter?  I know Prof. Rahe really enjoys the irony of the situation... "ha ha!  The Church is receiving her just deserts for years of Catholic liberals supporting liberal policy.  Isn't this just soooo ironic."

To me it comes off more like a college freshman sitting in his dorm room watching the Daily Show - whose only delight is irony, who likes to jab his finger in the Church's eye and who fails to grasp the fact that the Catholic Church, who has been the last bastion against the progressive onslaught on issues like abortion, euthanasia and protecting the family, is now the last bastion for religious liberty as well.

Peter,

Why did you insist on torturing poor Dr. Sowell by making him watch movie clips of that bad man?

Samwise Gamgee

I think this is a good sign.  It's a sign that libs in the media fear the Republican party to a certain extent.

No one publishes comprehensive attacks against things they view as inconsequential or inert.

Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with theAmerican people.

Pseudo, I'm not sure I like the new icon... Instead of the nice kitty, it's now what I can only assume is a sinister Canadian with dim lighting...

I'm scared....

So if I'm a psych major who just graduated and I went to Harvard, I'd have $160,000 grand in debt.  I get a job at Starbucks for 30 grand a year because i have no skills.  I pay back 10% per year for 10 years, $30,000, and the remaining $130,000 is "forgiven".... so who is going to pay the remaining $130,000?...

Your brother wasn't a psych major from Harvard, by any chance? · 2 hours ago

No, he went to a really super duper Jesuit school....

EJHill: . It's not Wall Street these idiots should be angry at, it's the snake oil professors and administrators in the universities that should be strung up.

Exactly.  Most people are skeptical when they see advertisements for good investments or when they talk to their retirement planner or a car salesman.  Yet, the received wisdom from the academy (who are also salesmen) of the last 50 years is just accepted without question - the wisdom that college is good and thus everyone should go to college regardless of cost.

DocJay: What did your bro say? So if this passes then I'll regret paying it all back like I promised when I took the loans. Who knew contracts had no honor anymore? · 1 hour ago

He didn't say too much, just pretty much accepted my comments and moved on... I don't think he's necessarialy thought it all the way through.  He just knows he has way too much debt for an average education.

Once the recent college graduate gets that first loan payment form, they may realize what the homeowner who has too much house has realized after their first mortgage payment....
