Tom Kirkwold: I'm one of the few Democrats on Ricochet.  I learned early on not to post about politics on Facebook.  What I've done is subscribe or like my favorite liberal places.  I enjoy their posts and they are just for me to read.  I post pictures of my family and the funny goings on we encounter.  And that's for my friends and family to enjoy.  I sometimes comment on political posts by others but that is all.  In the last 12 months, I was defriended by a conservative friend when I didn't agree with him and then I defriended a different conservative friend who would delete my posts regarding her political posts.  They were polite posts too.  That was strange.  I realized she didn't want to discuss and instead just wanted to express her opinion.  So I disengaged and defriended.

Oh Please comment on Casey's post on how Ricochet has impacted you, if you want to of course. It would be so interesting to know what you've gotten out of this site

I am so sad about this. I've read almost all of his books and always anticipated the new Mitch Rapp Book to come out. His books were a great escape to think that maybe there is a Mitch Rapp out there protecting this country. RIP Vince Flynn, you will be missed but Mitch Rapp is a great legacy to leave behind.

What about people that are obviously guilty of murder? Such as the Colorado movie theater shooter, or the Arizona Shooter, or Nadal Hassan, the Fort Hood massacre, or Cheshire, CT home invasion murderers. There is no doubt to these people's guilt and they all killed multiple people with no remorse.

Also, on the flip side what about the complete miscarriages of justice where murderers plea down a murder charge to manslaughter and serve ridiculously short sentences, such as with the Actress Dominique Dunne where her murderer served 6 1/2 years and was released.

We do not have a perfect system by far, but I don't think we need to throw the baby out with the bath water and eliminate capital punishment completely.

EstoniaKat: I changed my stance from squishy pro-choice to pro-life. I couldn't believe the horror of the Gosnell trial, that was pushed by a certain Ricochet editor, relentlessly, when the story really broke in USA Today. I educated myself afterwards. ·

Yes, I too am muchmorepro-life, thanks to Kermit. ·

Two more to the pro-life side. That's wonderful.

Everybody knows I'm conservative, and worse Pro-life ........ but most of my friends are "default" liberals, not all that passionate about it so when I make some arguments they kind of roll their eyes, and shrug their shoulders as if to say "That's our De, what can you do?" We never get angry with each other and many times my they agree with my arguments but I haven't broken them away from their default setting, YET!!

But I tend not to post political stuff on facebook, and I find it counter productive to argue with people over Facebook, I have in the past and its just been futile so I stopped, now I just post pictures of my kids. But if I have been unfriended due to my political beliefs I am unaware of it. One thing I've noticed about liberal friends is that they are usually the ones to post complaints about "all the political stuff thats being posted" Then they post a bunch of political stuff but I guess as long as its stuff they agree with its OK.

Permanent legal status. No citizenship. Obviously any offspring born here are citizens so it works itself out within a generation.

If you came here illegally, or overstayed illegally, you can never be rewarded with citizenship. If you want citizenship, then leave and go through the same process as all the millions waiting across the globe.

If the politicians did this in a 2 step process (1. secure border 2. permanent legal status) it would have overwhelming support from all sides of the spectrum.

I think that is a good plan. But we NEED to secure our border, cause its not just illegal Mexicans looking for work, its drug gangs, terrorists, etc....

I know many illegals came on a vistors visa or student visa and never left, we need to be able to track these people. If we now know that the NSA can gather phone, internet and credit card information from American citizens perhaps they could also use that program to track people who come over on visas

Matede
FloppyDisk90If all these illegals were likely to vote Republican would you still be in favor of deporting them?  Would you be in favor of a streamlined immigration system that allowed the current illegals to enter the country legally?

In Steve's entire post he never says that he is in favor of deporting illegals, which would be a Politically  impossible task (although illegals who commit crimes should be deported which is something that doesn't happen now, actually they get released from jail as was done by Janet Napolitano after the sequester.)

I think many of us want to make sure that our borders are secure so that more illegals cannot get in, THEN we can deal with the people who are here. Without secureing the border this problem will continue. This bill seems to be a short sighted political ploy to win elections and secure the democrats power, the implications of what this could do to our country doesn't seem to be considered at all.

Ann Coulter (who's seemed to have gotten her conservative bonafides back after her Christie infatuation) has a great article on this

Again the progressive idea of minimum wage laws and now Obamacare comes to bite these young skulls full of mush in the tush. Because this country has increased the cost of labor, employers will use unpaid interns to lower labor costs, but the interns are also able to gain work experience and connections that they can now use to get a paying job. This lawsuit has now further hampered the unskilled worker from getting a job.

Spud O'Chez:Even after living with me for over six years, I'm still waiting for one of my youngsters to tell me that he loves me.  I'll keep telling him that I love him, and have faith he feels the same unspoken way.

God Bless you and your wife for taking in these children and I pray that one day you'll hear the words you long to hear.

Matede

I think this is a short sighted reason not to have children, because in 20 or 30 years they may look around at a good and decent world and their reasons for not having children may not add up. Also I like Isreal's idea why not adopt then?

It seems to me that they just don't want kids and came up with this rationalization to make them feel better about it.

Apparently.  Living out here in the hinterland, I guess I tend to fly to either NY or Boston when I go east, and don't actually get to Connecticut much.  I think I drove through it once many years ago, and I know I had a business meeting there once (just over the border from Westchester).  But my impression, and I suspect it's widely shared by those who don't spend much  time there, was that all of Connecticut was the beautiful wealthy suburbs of the megalopolis to the southwest.  Time to adjust that perception.

Yes to outsiders Connecticut is usually just a barrier between NYC and Boston, But the whole state isn't Greenwich. But we do have alot of offer the visitor, other than the worst section of I-95 in the Country. We do have a beautiful coastline and some really great restaurants

To my complete surprise, Connecticut is the Greece of the United States (according to this analysis anyway).  My home state here of Illinois was not surprisingly in the "place" position (the only surprise was that it didn't take top honors) and California was surprisingly far down the list.  I just wonder why Connecticut doesn't get all the bad press.

We don't get a mention cause we're too small, 4 million people surrounded by other basket case states like New York, and Massachusetts which are much bigger. Connecticut has managed to fly under the radar, although there is an effort to Oust our horrendous governor, (who may not have even legitimately won his election. They "found" just enough votes for him in Bridgeport) Who is dragging this state down further into the abyss.  We have the trifecta of Super rich Liberals, a heavily unionized state, and a permanent underclass subsidized by the state, to keep the democrats in power, oh and a feckless Republican party. Like I said Mini- California without the great weather, but the sound is beautiful

Matede

Come to Connecticut where we have stately mansions on the Sound and third world condition roads. A high tax, high regulation state with restrictive gun laws and a one party democrat legislator, we’re like a mini-California

Matede

Great post DC, Its makes me nuts when Rush says that this will never stick to Obama, mainly because I know he's right and its very frustrating to hear. But the strategy of holding the democrat party for all of Obama's failures is one I really think can work. There are alot of  low info voters who may vote democrat but don't really identify themselves as such and usually only vote democrat cause they don't like Republicans. I think its entirely possible, but we need Republicans to break out of this self flagellation, John McCain/ Lindsay Graham mode that we can't attack the other side. People like Darrell Issa shouldn't be apologizing for calling Jay Carney a lier, especially when its true.

If the Republicans can do that then I think its possible but the Republicans need  to grow a spine first.

That hand held body scanner that they used in Sick bay on Star Trek. That would be cool.
