When I think of Ike's warning, I think of the time he lived and the experience of the war he fought. I believe about 1/2 of the Nobel science prizes were won by Germans. Von Braun, Heisinberg, Otto Hahn, and Max Planck were all brilliant German scientists who went along because government is where their money came from. I don't think many believed in the German government, but had curious minds. Von Braun was famous for saying he didn't care if it was Uncle Joe or Uncle Sam as long as he was a rich uncle.
Before that WWI soldiers faced gas, and I think it was Harber (or a fellow traveler), who celebrated the successful gassing personally. It has been questioned whether his wife committed suicide from being distraught over his role.
This history isn't that far away, any young person studying Chemistry or physics will find their books littered with history as much as science.
Milbank didn't eat enough Wheaties. The actions were not "independent" but part of his branch. He doesn't need to control, because he picked people a lot like himself, who believe in the end justifying the means.
Milbank is really upset about the snooping into the phone call thing.
Sheryl Attkison of CBS news is also very interested in this story to the dismay of her employer. I think she was the one that said she was yelled at by the administration over fast and furious.
So there are a few folks with integrity. (Kirsten Powers on the abortion dr. trial is another).
It cannot be emphasized enough with the low information voter that allowing the administration a pass is to reinforce government scapegoating of private persons to cover their butts. In the modern world we still have whipping boys and they are used by Progressives.
There really is such a thing as broken heart syndrome. It is treatable, but not with psuedoscience like Browne's. Like Johnny, shame on the grief hustlers like Williams, et. al.
Gee, I thought Bill O'Reilly and Geraldo already decided the matter last week. I could have sworn I heard O'Reilly say this bad guy would be tried found guilty and put to death, and Riveria agreed.
Obama is an impatient man. He makes quick decisions without much discussion or discernment. He knows what he wants and becomes aggitaged when it doesn't happen. When he gets what he wants and it doesn't turn out so well, there are many he can blame.
He wants terrorists to be tried in criminal court. It confines and diminishes the seriousness of the event. Perhaps in a way, it is disrespectful to the people who are serious in their hatred that he doesn't take them seriously. Maybe that is why our image in the middle east is at an all time low. At least GW treated them with the level of respect they asked for.
If I remember correctly, I believe GW and Kerry had similar academic careers. People misoverestimate Kerry's brilliance.
I wonder what Hillary found when she looked into the transfer of weapons from Libya to Turkey and other countries when she told Rand Paul she would look into it.
They all play the "I'll have my people call your people" game, and in the meantime people lose interest, forget, and only PR image remains. I wish there was a follow up Benghazi testimony from Hillary to come back with all the checking she was going to do so those of us paying attention like Columbo could wrap up the loose strings.
Fouad Ajami, a middle east expert, would probably beg to differ on Iraq. The chemical make up of the millstone of Iraq includes Democrats and Obama. While Bush gets the whole of the blame, he didn't act alone. He just did not turn, like so many others.
Valiuth: I can't wait for a cop to give these kids an indecent exposure ticket or a public urination fine....go go go gadget ordinances... · 5 hours ago
I was thinking the same thing. At what age is this indecent, and wouldn't it be a confusion issue for kids to learn to go this way, and then find out later there are laws against it?
I think I'd pass on this idea. It lacks consistency into adult life. Adam Sandler's big daddy method of paper training was meant as a joke.
I have read that after JFK's assasination, Jackie Kennedy exhibited courage based on a profound sense of duty. She knew it was up to her to lead the nation in mourning, not formally, but instinctively.
Duty is doing things you don't want to, but believe you have to.
You don't have to go to church regularly, but boy if you miss a group memorial after a sensational event, you are evil. You don't have to attend a funeral because you are so busy with life that your grandpa decides not to bother anyone, and just requests being cremated and later at a more convenient time, the family can get together for a few beers and potluck. A lack of duty coincides with the increase of a self centered culture. You don't have to really care, which takes time and effort, you only have to adopt popular sentiments in order to have more time and effort to attend to yourself.
Liberals like victims, but the only victim in an abortion is the women that cannot obtain one on demand. The only crime someone with that world view could be interested in is the death of a patient, which is a singular case of malpractice from that viewpoint. Malpractice happens.
Obama views an unplanned pregnancy as a punishment, as do many who justify its neccessity. These are central planning people, through and through. Abortion is dehumanizing, which is what socialism is about. If you are dehumanized, your cries are meaningless.
Patrick in Albuquerque: I'd recommend a read of Iron curtain : the crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956by Anne Applebaum.
The book's a bit of a slog but, using the commie's own archives, Applebaum lays out the tactics they used in the time period to crush any opposition. As I was reading it, I kept thinking they used the same tactics we see from our lefties. · 2 hours ago
I have been thinking the same thing. Failed policies cause embarassement. That's the importance of someone to blame (Granholm blamed Engler all 8 years, and Obama will blame Bush/Rep). It is standard operating procedure for personality driven governence. Stalin's dismal rebuild of Eastern Europe in contrast to the west's more successful Marshall Plan resulted in a purging of communists to place blame, not on the plan, but on the people carrying it out. I was surprised that she wrote that the communists were confident they would win free elections because their system was so attractive to the working man. When that didn't work in Poland, they merely cheated the results. We already do that too.
As Walter Williams has noted, how do you think we have mandatory seat belt laws, and anti smoking laws? They started with voluntary campaigns, ie., "buckle up for safety" catchy tune.
Yes it is possible, and is slow and unrelentless by those who have an end goal in mind.
Some one mentioned carrying BB guns in the 50's and no one bothering to get excited. I was reading a 1950's children's book from my own childhood, and in "Peter Pan and Captain Hook", Peter and the lost boys stabbed and killed the pirates. Peter carried a dagger. Curious George had a good pipe, etc. Patricia Scarry wrote "Pierre Bear" a story my son loved (late 70's). It is now taken out of the Scarry collection of stories because it is controversial. Is it because he hunted and shot a moose and made minced moosemeat, or that he went to town and got himself a wife?
A priest at a wedding I went to explained his career as a person who counsels married couples. He went on to tell of his degrees in psychology, etc. and said at the end, the most important thing is for heaven's sake speak decent to each other. Addressing each other with respect goes a long way. Its kind of simple but has deep effects.
