Mike LaRoche: I can't believe no one has yet mentioned Space Battleship Yamato, or as it was known in this country, Star Blazers.

Absolutely brilliant stories.

I always thought of it as "Robotech without the giant robots", and without the giant robots what's the point?

;-)

Now, Captain Harlock is a series I can get behind, because the characters are more interesting. · 9 hours ago

Phantom F. Harlock is cool, I agree.

Great post!  Wish I could have gone to one of the NBA Finals games to cheer for my Spurs, but attending a second Nationals game this coming Sunday will have to suffice.

Steve's a little bit country, Vlad's a little bit rock and roll.

DocJay: I like the LaRoche Law. Make the government try it at the point of a gun. If we don't have this fight within 15-20 years, we'll never have it. · 10 hours ago

The federal government will not use guns.  They will withhold funds.  A much more effective means of forcing compliance.

They will say, "You want to go against us?  Then no one in (name of State) gets any federal benefits."  That will be enough. · 2 minutes ago

Rather hard to do when the federal government goes broke.  And it will be, quite soon.

Central Scrutinizer: It seems to me that what you're really asking is, what is the benefit of remaining within the law, or....why not become an outlaw? Interesting question, that. · 7 minutes ago

"In-laws and outlaws, right guys and southpaws, good dogs and all kinds of cats.  Dirt roads and white lines, and all kinds of stop signs, I stand right here where I'm at.  'Cause I wear my own kind of hat."

The LaRoche Law.  I rather like the sound of that.

Starve the Beast: Here's a quote we're all familiar with from the great thinker Alexander Fraser Tytler:

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.

But the American left has gone Tytler one better: Now impoverished people from around the world can come here and vote themselves largess from our treasury.

I wonder... how will it end? · 40 minutes ago

My prediction: pain.

Believe me WC, I've tried to think of many different places to live; my husband is intent upon retiring in Budapest. (I blame myself for insisting upon Eastern European vacations.)

BC is correct; there are several tax-free states remaining in this country- TX, FL, NV, and WA for example, and within those individual states, there is a huge property tax variance between individual counties. The U.S. still provides choices that are unavailable elsewhere.

It's only a matter of time now that non-citizens can vote for representation per the Supreme Court. Our government is capricious and lawless. The aforementioned states don't save us from drawing the tender attention of the federal government. They just impose fewer ministrations compared to otherstategovernments.

Again, I'm not looking to move. I'm looking to obtain a more advantageous status. I think we've tipped over into citizenship being a disadvantage, and resident alien status being an advantage.

If at first you don't secede, try try again!

Mike LaRoche

The Supreme Court's decision should be ignored by the states.  One brave governor needs to stand up and say "John Roberts has made his decision, let him enforce it."

It appears we have a graduate of the Piers Morgan School of Debating among us. You slay us with your rapier wit, my good man!

C'mon. Admit it.  You didn't read the rest of my post before you sent this reply.  [:-)

Of course I did. Granted, I may have overreacted,  but there are certain terms -vulture capitalism is one of them- that push my buttons. :)

Why the hell couldn't Mr. Capitalism with his Harvard MBA and Harvard Law Degree see that sucker punch coming and do something to get out of the way or at least take the sting out of it?

Mitt Romney has never been a particularly skilled politician because he has always focused upon financial matters. He's been busy making money. Lots of it.

This is why he lost the election, but exactly why he earned my vote and admiration and would have made a great president. He understands the complexities of  the American and global economy, but the electorate has no appreciation for this particular acumen.

In other words, I blame the "people."

As H.L. Mencken once wrote, "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard."

And boy, are they.

Well, if this goes to the Main Feed, I'd best not share my joke about Joe Biden and Grape Nuts.
