Bio

Catholic Christian.  Son. Brother. Husband. Father. American. Conservative. Soldier. Friend.

Why Cornelius Julius Sebastian? "Brasidas" was taken (again), so I went with my Facebook (FB) moniker.  I was new to FB and only joined because I was deploying and thought it would be a good way to keep in touch with my family and friends. I had heard lots of stories about folks being inundated with friends requests on FB from folks they really had no interest in being in contact with, so I decided to go with a pseudonym. I've always been fascinated classical Rome and its military. I have also always identified with the several Roman soldiers who interact or speak with Christ in the Gospels. Especially as someone who for a time rejected the Christian Faith (the Roman soldiers who scourged and crucified Christ), then later was compelled by Christ's example to return to His Church ("Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof...."). So, I ran a highly unscientific Google search for the most common names for Roman centurions and the first three that came up were Cornelius, Julius and Sebastian, thus my FB, and now Ricochet, nom de guerre.

I've heard buzz on this in mil circles since shortly after the incident.  I hope it is not true, but won't surprise me if it is.

I realize that this thread has become about something other than what DocJay first posted, and someone may have dropped this in the comments earlier and I missed it,  but this article by NRO's John O'Sullivan http://www.nationalreview.com/article/348850/explaining-pope is well worth reading.

Not West Virginia!  I don't think Kentucky either.  PA, VA, OH? Yes.

Wow! Please write your testimony in full!  That is fantastic!

Well, there's nothing more to tell really. But, having regard to your moniker, I thought you might appreciate my favourite piece of stained glass: · 13 minutes ago

St. Martin, pray for us!

Stephen Hall: I was finishing some graduate studies in England. When I arrived there I was an atheist. During my studies, I was introduced to the works of CS Lewis, and I read almost all his apologetics over a period of about 2 years. So I guess I was primed. Then, I had a few days to kill before returning home to Australia, so I visited Greece to see the cradle of our civilisation. On my second day I walked into a small Orthodox church building in Athens. I saw a Virgin-and-Child icon in one corner which appeared to be the main artwork in the church, so I walked over to have a look. After a few seconds looking at it, I began to cry, and I just couldn't stop for about 15 minutes. A priest came over to see if I was alright, but  I think he guessed what was going on and left me alone. I came out of that church a believing Christian.

So, an Ulster Protestant and an Orthodox icon paved the way for my conversion to the Catholic faith.

Wow! Please write your testimony in full!  That is fantastic!

DocJay: Cornelius Julius Sebastian" Some folk seemed to have legitimate spiritual ecstasies, but many seemed to be compensating for some painful psychological issue. " I have only my testimony to offer. Raised as an agnostic I developed a belief in God in my 20's, becoming a Christian in my early 30's. At the height of despair regarding whether my kids would be killed by a drug addict I asked God to do something for me for the first and so far only time. A comfort came over me like a drug and I attribute this to the Holy Spirit. A painful psychological time indeed and one that made me a better person, for I've never felt alone since. · 5 hours ago

I think we are talking about different things Doc.  I too have had experiences of deep comfort in times of exceeding difficulty, that I can only attribute to the Holy Spirit.  I'm talking about the hopping-twirling-dancing-speaking in tongues-having a seizure on the floor kind of stuff. All that may be legit too, I just found it a little suspect in the congregations I grew up in.  But individual driver mileage may vary.

Stephen Hall: Too much in the way of car chases and fisticuffs. Not enough effort directed at having a tight and credible plot. Kirk's kumbaya speech to the assembled star fleet was incongruous and gratingly Hollywood liberal.

On the other hand, it did not take itself too seriously and the humour was refreshing.

Nice to see a tribble.

This is the Achilles heel of CGI era filmaking.  Dazzle over substance.  The second Star Wars trilogy was all that.   Even Peter Jackson managed to diminish LOTR's power to a certain extent by relying on F/X ratehr than story.

It took his leg down a peg.
