Bio

Catholic Christian.  Son. Brother. Husband. Father. American. Conservative. Soldier. Friend.

Why Cornelius Julius Sebastian? "Brasidas" was taken (again), so I went with my Facebook (FB) moniker.  I was new to FB and only joined because I was deploying and thought it would be a good way to keep in touch with my family and friends. I had heard lots of stories about folks being inundated with friends requests on FB from folks they really had no interest in being in contact with, so I decided to go with a pseudonym. I've always been fascinated classical Rome and its military. I have also always identified with the several Roman soldiers who interact or speak with Christ in the Gospels. Especially as someone who for a time rejected the Christian Faith (the Roman soldiers who scourged and crucified Christ), then later was compelled by Christ's example to return to His Church ("Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof...."). So, I ran a highly unscientific Google search for the most common names for Roman centurions and the first three that came up were Cornelius, Julius and Sebastian, thus my FB, and now Ricochet, nom de guerre.

It took his leg down a peg.

If you made this story up, no one would believe it.

Quod erat demonstrandum.

I was raised in and among non-denominational Pentecostal congregations.  My feelings remain mixed about the frenzies I observed (although I tried, I never felt the spirit move me). Some folk seemed to have legitimate spiritual ecstasies, but many seemed to be compensating for some painful psychological issue.  I have had some powerful dreams with Catholic themes both before and after I converted 14 years ago.  The dreams aside, I have felt the most spiritually moved at mass during the consecration of the Eucharist.  The significance of what is happening, and the unbroken connection of the rite to the Apostolic foundation of our Faith never fails to fill me with awe.

Christianity was a sect...

This is true of the Church of Rome but not of the Church. The Orthodox have never had a hierarchy like that of Rome.

Half of Catholic christians are not organized like a Roman army. They practice the traditional teachings of the church: each bishop is equal to every other. They are in apostolic succession and practice in the full authority of the traditions of the Church.

There is no single, temporal head of the Church as the Patriarch of the West, the Bishop of Rome, claims. The Patriarch of Constantinople is a spokesman for the  autocephalous churches, and he is primate of one of them. He is elected for his penitence, piety, and prudence. He is not supreme but primary.

Not all Catholics are Roman. The Church is not the Latin church. ·

With the xception of the Curia, and College of Cardinals, the Orthodox hierachy is very much the same as the Catholic hierarchy.  Deacons, Priests, Bishops (offices identified in the NT), though they have Metropolitans and Patriarchs.  Unsurprising since we were all the same Church until ~1054 AD.  There are many non-Roman rite Catholics nevertheless in union with Rome.

You're right that the Church has a long tradition of being involved in politics, ...

I'm including Jesus as head of the Church.   ...

Christianity was a sect, or even a cult, of Judaism until the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (306-337) made it the dominant religion of the Roman Empire.

The organization of the Church of Rome is based on the hierarchical system of the Roman Army. As in the army, it is ruled from the top down, and everyone is expected to be obedient without question.  · 4 hours ago

Red, that is an absolutely preposterous and egregiously false statement.

Unassailable logic.  My childhood preference for Ginger may explain much of my relationship woes in life.

Fear not. It is not an infallible pronouncement, nor could it be.  But it is exasperating.

I am WAY pumped!  Season 1 & 2 free viewing on Amazon Prime!

Yes, the accounts are widespread and the footage and photographs unbelievably graphic. Beheadings, a jihadi favorite, abound. An expatriate Iraqi forwarded me one of Assad's men beating two rebels to death. When the thin veneer of civilization is removed, the human capacity for cruelty and suffering beggars the imagination. We will see more, not less, of this in the years to come.

@WC: I don't have cable, but if Amazon or some other online video has them available I'm buying every season available!
