ConservativeWanderer: Well, I may as well leave, then.

I pay good money to have a place to express my need to write. Trust me, writing notes to yourself in a word processor isn't quite the same.

If I can't express it here, in as many posts as I see fit, I'll just find another outlet. · 1 hour ago

How about posting your best seven a week here and the balance at that other outlet? · 6 minutes ago

How about, no.

I've already quit once, and it was only the CEO emailing and BSA's kind apology for the way he acted that got me back. I still haven't renewed my automatic billing.

You wanna stifle the muse, you don't get the benefits of it.

Sisyphus: I am going to join the chorus on gift subscriptions and whatnot. In every project I've ever been on, once we had a base capability working and stable, we dropped all the nice to haves and worked to automate every payment channel we could imagine until there was no wetware in the loop from the web page to the bank, whether it took two weeks or three months.  All very visible wherever you were on the site.

One business to business client said, no, no, no, I'll have this great sales staff doing callbacks on all orders to establish "the relationship" with our "partners". Their hits went from thousands to tens a week at Internet speed despite industry magazine ad buys, and I found other clients to keep myself busy a couple of weeks before they switched platforms and started all over again and a few months before they sold to an only slightly less inept competitor. · 15 minutes ago

This.

You need to make it as quick, easy, and painless as possible for people to give you money. Make it difficult and they'll take their money elsewhere or leave it in their pocket.

Brian Watt: Definitely a good choice. Woof. · 8 minutes ago

Yep. A Golden never meets a stranger... they love everyone.

CuriousJohn:

So if you like your Ricochet handle, I suggest going there now and grabbing your Ricochet handle so it can be used when Ricochet.com is switched to the new platform (based on WordPress software). · 4 minutes ago

It's not guaranteed they're going to WordPress.

Also, the WordPress comment system is a little bit bare-bones. There is a much better system that can easily be "plugged in" to WordPress, called Disqus, that I would suggest they use if they do indeed go to WordPress.

James Lileks: BTW: anyone up for a Christmas "Diner" fundraiser podcast, an hour-long exploration of the best and worst of Christmas music? · 6 hours ago

Speaking of which, where's the Official Ricochet Christmas Tree?

(looks around) I think it'd look best in that corner over there.

James Lileks: Perhaps the rethink / redesign should take a page from reddit, and create subrics - an area for the socons, the liberarians, the green-eyeshade types, the political junkies.   · 2 minutes ago

Uh, no.

People would congregate in their preferred section and ignore the others.

The "community" would be Balkanized the way the lefties have Balkanized America with their grouping people by skin color or gender.

That's not the way to go.

ConservativeWanderer: By the way, looking at how this thread has kept going, I have one observation to make:

Isn't it amazing how the prospect of impending disaster sharpens one's interest? · 2 minutes ago

Space 1999 jokes might not be the best omen to end with. · 0 minutes ago

Gallows humor has a place in any discussion. :p

Pseudodionysius: If we get to Comment #1999 I'm going to appear as Martin Landau and make several MoonBase Alpha jokes. · 3 minutes ago

That won't happen.

When we get to comment #1984, Big Brother will order the Ministry of Truth to send the entire thread into the Memory Hole.

Casey: I just had an awful thought... If Ricochet goes under I'm gonna have to start keeping these comments to myself again. · 2 minutes ago

You could ask Rob for his personal email and send them to him.

DrewInWisconsin: A similar note graces the shelves of a nearby convenience store. · 2 minutes ago

I imagine they're popping up all over America.

And people will be blaming unions for the loss of Twinkies.

I'd call that a Pyrrhic victory. · 22 minutes ago

Who's making all these Snack Artistsigns?  Are the workers being exploited by the plutocrats running Big Sign?  I think the unions  have way forward to recoup their Hostess membership losses. · 0 minutes ago

I dunno, I'm in a very red right-to-work state. They might be unionized or they might not.

ConservativeWanderer

That does it. The new software must avoid numbering any comment as 666.

Come to think of it, it should also avoid comment #13, especially on Fridays.

Casey: There's something unsettling about Pseudo posting at 666. · 1 minute ago
