How about Cafe Bialik (ביאליק 2) in Tel Aviv, 3pm on June 27? It's a thursday.

Emily Schrader

This is exactly right.

Not only has he been divisive in the language he uses and the things he says, but the policies, like welfare, that he (and other democrats) are constantly trying to ram down the throats of the American people have disproportionately hurt blacks more than other ethnicities. It's a shame there aren't more Conservatives willing to talk about this and reach out to those communities more. I know that some do, but I wish there were a greater effort.

This is so refreshing to see. After all, everyone knows Muslims are going to be attacked by those crazy, violent, tea-partying, radical, racist evangelicals. You know, it'll be just like the American people did after 9/11...lots of crimes against Muslims, from fist fights to suicide bombs. Cause that's what Christians do.

Oh and nevermind the fact that less than 10% of "hate" crimes are against Muslims...the vast majority are against Jews.

Rocket City Dave: I have more trouble understanding someone who marries someone of another religion than of a different political party.

I agree. While I wouldn't marry someone who was a leftist, if forced to choose between a leftist and a man who isn't Jewish I would choose the leftist. It's nothing personal or anything, I just think the foundations are too different.

Matthew K. Tabor:

She had the Democratic voter roll in her hand because that's what my parents were on. Oops.

It's not that people cant live together and be happy with different views...it certainly happens. But can someone who truly thinks and talks about these things, who really is interested in politics, would they be open to it? As

said, it seems like a mine field if it's something that comes up a lot in a relationship.

Also, this is why (as I said in what I wrote) I asked almost exclusively politically active young people.

Sabrdance: I figure if James Carville and Mary Matalin can stay married while running opposing campaigns -and make jokes about how the oldest tradition in America is going to cancel each-other's vote -then the rest of us have no excuse

See everyone loves to talk about that example, but I see political views  as a manifestation of something more more ideological that is related to core values,  and often religion. So while I think it would be possible for people to work on opposing campaigns or for different parties like James and Mary, the question to ask about their relationship isn't who they vote for, but what they actually believe and how dissimilar they are in their values (which is something we can't really know).

Haha! Well if you're going to disagree, I suppose those are the things to disagree on.

Peter Fumo: I think men and women are attracted to different things. If a man has a different world view than a woman, relfected in his politics, that could ultinmately affect how they raise children etc, I think this is more of an issue with a woman. However, if a man sees an extremely attractive woman who is a liberal, politics be damned. · 8 minutes ago

That's what I was talking about with the biology thing. I thought women might be a little more picky for those same reasons. Even your standard middle-of-the-road Democrat woman, as the end of the day, wants the the same things as a Conservative woman...marriage, family, etc.

This of course is a broad generalization.

Aaron Miller: There is no part of life more representative of human willfulness than romantic interests. I doubt that many people follow through on their justified misgivings about dating individuals of contrary worldviews... especially with the Disneyfication of "love" in modern America. · 4 minutes ago

Can you clarify? I'm not sure what you mean...that people who say that they would date the opposite political view actually would not?

Emily Schrader
Jager: I think like many things it is a matter of degree. I would date/marry a liberal. I would not date/marry a liberal "activist".

Interesting distinction. I think I'm in the position where I wouldn't date someone apathetic either, but I can definitely understand someone who isn't invested in politics being able to date someone of opposite political views that also isn't too invested.

John: See my issue is if I am closely aligned with someone in other areas of life, I can't imagine that they would disagree with me on a number of things unless they weren't thoughtful at all (which I couldn't deal with), or they actually don't see the what I believe to be moral flaws with different (well radically different) ideologies. Your situation sounds a little bit different because your ideologies are pretty compatible. I'm curious, what DO you disagree on?

Emily Schrader

I like you. Don't leave us because some people are nasty.

Sure this is one example of something Beyonces people did (because let's be honest, it's not like the woman writes her own material) that sends a relatively positive message, but there's a larger reason that conservatives and...people...dismiss Beyonce. It's because she's a hypocrite and an uneducated moron with poor taste who posts pictures that say "take that mitches" after the 2012 elections, and dresses like a harlot. Then, she and her husband decides its a good idea to visit Cuba?! There's a lot of pop culture figures who aren't taking offensive actions in the public eye (Taylor swift for example). One doesn't have to like Beyonce or her music to be involved in, or a fan of, some pop culture. Beyonce and her Che supporting (oh the irony) husband aren't a good example of a way for Conservatives to be supporters of pop culture. Also lets be honest, for every song with a positive message there are 10 more with a negative message (kesha, spears, perry). when the majority of pop culture IS horribly offensive and trashy there's no reason we should dig through the garbage to find something about it that has a good message.
