Bio

I live in Indiana, but I graduated from Purdue so don't call me a hoosier.  I'm currently a grad student working on my master's in computer engineering.  I've always been a conservative.  I am also an evangelical Christian.  I'm a political junkie and devour news, opinions, and commentary, and I love a good debate.

Thanks for posting this.  If true, this is truly jaw-dropping.  I will say, while its hard to underestimate the Obama administration, I never quite understood how letting people die would improve his election chances.  This new reason makes more sense.

Peter, all of you should look into using something like AdBlock, there is free software out there to make your internet experience much more enjoyable by blocking most of the annoying adds.  There is also software that can change how you see youtube facebook and other popular sites to give them a cleaner, less cluttered appearance.  Just some helpful tips.

here

WSJ Opinion article about the increased revenues.  Basically the author attributes it to investors cashing out at the lower capital gains rate last year to avoid the increase this year.  Makes sense, and we'll definitely see that held true if the revenues take a dive next year.

Being an engineer, this statement makes no sense to me.

No Caesar: Well, beautiful women make men stupid (or at least do stupid things).  I'm willing to bet guys would have problems with higher math questions if they were looking at a video of Kate Upton. · 11 hours ago

Ha! That's perfect.

I wouldn't underestimate the fashion industry.  Their loincloths will be of higher quality leather, and of course, more revealing.

tabula rasa: Following that line of logic:

Climate Change=Food Insecurity=Cannibalism

Climate Change=Food Insecurity=Obesity problem solved

Climate Change=Loincloths year round=collapse of fashion industry=Anna Wintour has to live like everyone else

We could go on. · 2 hours ago

Although, there is at least one phrase in that letter, that I had never heard before, and I have a tough time seeing coming out of any locker room.

Goldgeller: I was in a fraternity at UMiami. Great experience. Nothing like that letter was ever said or written. However I can understand the push for a big "Greek Week" and for participation. The rumors I heard in highschool was that football coaches regularly said stuff like this to the players-- ie highschool students. I believe it! I'm pretty sure stuff like this is said in most every locker room on a school with a sports program. Probably people get phone calls like this from their bosses. Im not saying any of it is right. But it isn't like the lady (probably not the right word!) did something really out of the ordinary. Foul language is unfortunately rather common. · 4 minutes ago

Well said.

I assume that you mean encouraging people to cross the border legally as long as they "sign in" first?  But, given our government's track record, won't these people end up staying despite the factthat they're on a list somewhere?  ICE knows where plenty of these people are, they just don't do anything about it. It seems easier and more effective to restrict immigration.  · 13 minutes ago

I know its far from ideal, and I agree with you that restriction would be easier to implement, but if we are not going to because of the elite's unwillingness, I would at least like to make sure the immigrants play by the same rules as everyone else; pay taxes, FICA, etc.  I see one of the big evils of illegal immigration as the formation of a labor underclass.  Not that I agree with all of the labor laws we have in place, but as long as they are there, employers and workers need to follow them or the system becomes unbalanced the way that it is now.  It becomes nearly impossible to run certain businesses legally, because you can't compete.

One of the reasons to move to the right is that people respond to big ideas.  Of course there is a limit, and ideas that stretch too far are also a non-starter, but ideas that occupy the middle are drowned in the noise.  The other assumption is that you can move to the center/left and retain the conservative voting block.  Whatever the merits are of voting for people who are the lesser of two evils, voting like this is very tiring for your average voter.

2.  Jonah, John, and Rob, are making a mistake when they summarily dismiss the idea of moving to the right.  I'm not saying they are wrong in the prescription for winning in the future, but the case isn't as straightforward as they make it sound.  They are reducing the problem to a very basic model, and make some big assumptions.  One of these assumptions is that people have an inherent ideology and when what you offer matches with them they vote for you.  In reality that is hardly the case.  What Rush calls the "low information voter" is not someone who votes this way.  That's not to say that they have no principles to vote on, but there are other, stronger mechanisms at play.  One of these is leadership, and the strength of a politicians convictions.  By and large the "moderates" of the elected class tend to not to be decisive people.

1. While I understand and believe that reasonable people can disagree about the path to take on Immigration, I don't go all the way to Jonah's perspective that it is strictly a tactical issue.  One of the underlying principles that matters greatly to conservatives is respect for the rule of law.  When a lot of what passes for immigration reform is just ignoring the rule of law because it is hard, that is a counter-conservative point.  However, I will say that for whatever reason, lack of political will, political correctness, etc, our current laws are not working.  Something has got to change.  I'm open to the proposition that we open up the borders a great deal, so that we can at least regulate the problem, but what we cannot have is laws that are perpetually unenforced and then forgiveness for the perpetrators.
